barsoom-go

Post by LordMortis »

Anyone interested in trying this?

http://www.eblong.com/zarf/barsoom-go.html

We could do a four player game with a board something like this

XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX

Each Player gets their own color such as

Player 1
Player 2
Player 3
Player 4

The pyramids could be these symbols ><^v

Each player has:
5 1's
5 2's
5 3's

A Null square could be a 0
A root squere could be a 4

As the game progresses each player in turn simply replies and modifies the board, thier pieces, and the score. So the game might look like something like this.

Player 1 post:

XX 00 XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX

If no one else steps up we can publicly do a two player game and then see if anyone bites for a four player game after out example. I'm actually pretty curious to see how this works out.

I haven't played this before or checked heavily into good moves, but it looks interesting. If a fourth signs up, I'll give it a go.

Note: I think you have Player 1's move backwards since you have to point toward a root or branch.

XX 00 XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX 44 XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX 44 <3 XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX 00 XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX

I have a few suggestions to make the game flow smoother

- choose colors that show up well on blue/white as well as gold/black (might be tough)
- each player move should include a code block at the end containing the bbcode for all the current moves as well as player pyramid counts
- posting player should also list the score change as well as update the running scores.

Code: Select all

XX 00 XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX 44 XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX 44 [color=darkred]<3[/color] XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX 00 XX XX
XX XX XX XX XX XX XX XX

I've never played before either (as would be evidenced by my backwards pyramid). :) I'm open for suggestions for making the game a smooth and easy to comprehend as possible.

We can start with colors. Pick four good ones. I was just looking at the subsilver and making the colors not look like each other.

I don't think using code is necessary because all you have to do is quote the person in front of you to get what you need from the code. There might be differences in the way I see the world and the way others see the world, though. Is there a reason why coding the board would be easier for you? It's ought not be a real inconvenineince to include it the code at the bottom.

The score change sounds good.

Would this be done in A-H, 1-8? A running list?

I think Shinjin is stating that the board be placed once visually and once in bbcode using the [ code ] [ / code ] tags or using the:

Code: Select all

[code]
[/code]
tags.

Good point. I didn't realize that the quote feature did this. Forget the separate code block idea.

Great, now just give us a good four player color scheme in both black and subsilver. :)

That's a good idea.

As the board gets filled in, it may get difficult to spot the last player's move (or last 3 if you haven't been watching closely). Maybe follow spreadsheet convention and use letters for the column and numbers for the row. So the sample move could be

Player 1 Move = 5G3W

For "in row 5 column G place a pyramid with 3 tiles pointing west" (north is up)

The nomenclature is just a suggestion - it may be too compressed.

Sounds good to me. I think the arrows would be visually easier for me to understand. I assume the only difficult black scheme color to understand is the orange, so how does this look in black?

Player 1
Player 2
Player 3
Player 4

Now we just need a fourth. Anyone? Bueller?

Call me a sucker for time wasting behavior but you can count me as your fourth.

While we are wating... I will set the board and randomize the players....

Edit and we have a fourth. Raven when you see this you are up. You can begin by putting down 00's and then I will do the same. Shinjin and then Remus will then put down 44's and then you will put down your first arrow and numeric value.

We are emulating a game that Looney Labs (I guess) created on a chess board. As we change the XX structure we are emulating what the changing board would look like. The points represent pyramid pieces being played down. Eventually when we lay pyramid pieces they we have to face pieces that aren't ours. When that happens points will be scored for the person who had their piece pointed to and subtracted from the person doing the pointing. The goal appears to be to keep your pieces open while blocking other peoples off but this is the first I've played. I could be way off.

"I don't know," Snufkin replied.

This explains why I thought that... COLUMNS are Vertical, no?

Yep, but I've been doing it backwards. I didn't actually read the post about which was which.

That wasn't my intent at all, it's an easy step to miss. In fact if you look at my first move, I'm the original slacker:
