The Realm has been thrown into Chaos. Emperor Torahn has disappeared, leaving his five Sons in a power stuggle to wrest control of the Empire from the Spectre of a Lost Monarch.

Cities have begun to declare their allegiance secretly to support their favored choice of Heir.

The Orc King of the Northern Plains stands ready to invade the Weakened Human Empire.

The elves are scattered in small tribes throughout the Empire, a truce that once was forged in Battle now lays in shards. Will the Brothers pick up the pieces?

The Dwarves of the Southern Hills make great profit with the coming Struggle, as the Smiths pour out armament for the 5 sons of Torahn.
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.

I wouldn't say "need" but you might want to consider something from This Table

Everburning torch instead of lantern perhaps

Thunderstones and tanglefoot bags are always handy.

Perhaps a nice signet ring so we know the wax sealed letter is from you?

Or you could loan me some gold so I can get masterwork thieves tools (+2 circum bonus)

Couple sqare yards of canvas for impromptu shelter, manacles to bind the criminals we bring in for justice.

Actually get whatever you want but I wouldn't carry that much cash on you, big old coin purse will attract unwanted attention.

One thing I would definately suggest is some kind of ranged weapon, shortbow, xbow, sling, whatever.

OK, so I bought a bunch of stuff and now I'm hardly able to move, overweight by about 25 pounds. Someone hand that bag of holding over here!

Where can I find some reference to what a backpack can hold and more info about the Bag of Holding? I guess I can ditch the portable ram, but it sounded like a good idea at the time. I need less stuff or more strength.

Would any of you fine chaps care to take that ring of feather fall? If Allanon would have another look over our gear and see if there's anything we lack, we can figure out who needs to be rescued.

I'm not sure what Hammerhands has left in his purse, we might be able to swing the money for Allanon's improved lockpicks. I can certainly pitch in most of what I have remaining.

I'd suggest Hyena aka 'the monk', for the ring so he can do wild jumping and wall climbing antics.

Otherwise I think we are set and should save some cash to buy anything we might need as challenges arise, whether it be information from the local underground, or a cauldron full of holy water for the nasty vampire(s).

While picking up needed supplies in MistyWood, a man wearing the livery of Toring (fourth son) suggests there is a weapon shipment en route that could use some extra travel protection. Northbound.

At the Misty Inn there is a notice in the common room of a Traveler looking for assistance in westbound travel.
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.
The door shut again and Snufkin entered his forest, with a hundred miles of silence ahead of him.

With the threat of orcs to the north there may be folk in need of help in that direction. The weapon caravan would be a good way to work our way north and learn more of what is going on up there. There was a bill posted in the Inn, but headed west. I think there is greater need for my... for our services to the north.

I agree that those in the north could use our assistance. Supply lines are always a target in times of war, and if perhaps because of our efforts even one more son or husband makes it home, it would be worth it.

((I also grab some climbing gear (thanks Graf) with the money we have.))

Perhaps it would not be wise to pool our resources into one large pot. I would suggest we divide it equally once we are finished with the supplies least something...unpleasant happen to the carrier of the goods. To have our entire fortune go tumbling down a cliff because of a loose rock would be unfortunate. As for the ring, I will accept it until it is no longer needed or someone else should need it.

Is it wise to align ourselves with one of the heirs so soon? I think it a bit wiser to see what this stranger in the inn might have to say at the least before we throw our lot in with a common guard patrol of an heir that may or may not share our common goals

/ooc I would like to attempt a Knowledge Local to get a bit more info about Toring and current events, perhaps a gather information or Knowledge Nobility by someone a bit more persuasive than myself would give us some more clues.

edit:Also I have Johan outside of town to hunt and frolic in the woods and plains.

Spoiler:
Current events places Toring (fourth son) caught between two more powerful sons. Torbird (third son) has amassed a large collection of magical items for his use. Torpin (fifth son) has been rumored to employ assassins and brigands for both quiet and showy demonstrations. Rumors courtesy of Old Man in Tavern (c)
GM note: this is the equivalent of stating out loud to a character rather than passing down a note. It allows the players to HEAR it if they wish though the characters may not have shared knowledge. The player in question could quote this response and remove the tags.

Knowledge I deem ONLY available to the Player I will most likely PM them.

So my good friends it seems that Toring is caught in defending himself from what appears to be two more powerful brothers, would anyone care to accompany to the inn in order to investigate this "Travelers" needs in more detail?

Proceed to the inn with or without companions, to find out more about this traveler and his posting of westbound travel.

The serving girl at the Misty Inn says she will tell the man you are there to inquire about his notice.

After a small space, a cloaked figure comes to your table and informs you he requires protection as he is a messenger. It would be a trip of 150 miles one way.

I understand your caution, but how is heading north to fight against the orcs, a threat to ALL the lands, siding with one brother or the other? Unless I miss my guess, by heading north and siding AGAINST the orcs, we would indeed be doing all five brothers a favor, as well as the innocent civilians that live on the border that would be the first to suffer

/OOC What do we know about the 5 brothers? Is there one that is more universally liked or hated than the others, are they all equally loathed, etc. I know you can't tell us our own impressions, but what sort of information do we have on them so we can make an educated decision on who we might end up siding with.

Hammerhands

**Edit: Our party history said we were defending a village. What were we defending the Elven village against? Or does it not really matter...if it was orcs, we might have a bit of inside knowledge about the tribes involved in the northern excursion. If it was one of the brother's goonsquads, which one? If it was just the random monster variety...well...at least we got to second level from that. :P

Forgive my inattention, I just realized that the owner of the shipment of weapons was in fact the fourth son. But still, my argument stands. If we assist any efforts in the north we are in fact helping everyone in the lands. It would also stand to reason that anyone attempting to stop an arms shipment from reaching the frontline of battle may be siding with the orcs. It would be wise to know our enemies, I believe.

This would include any of the brothers.

As in the other threads, may we assume that any climate-related gear will be provided for us by the contractor?

I agree the weapons shipment sounds the better task at the moment, but it wouldn't hurt to hear more of what this messenger's intentions are.

/ooc I think you guys a bit quick to assume that the weapons are to be used against the Orcs.

I gruffly sit down at the inn wracking my brain of the western geography with a cautious look on my face. Making sure I am out of earshot of the messenger , I converse with my comrades. Do not misinterpret my intentions brothers, I agree that the Orcs may be the larger threat however I am not one to let stones go unturned. As it looks now perhaps we have found a messenger(spy) headed back towards the brother that likes to use assassins and brigands, I may be inclined to do the 5 kingdoms a favor and rid the land of such vermin. If we find that he is of not much concern I agree that we throw our lot in with the weapons delivery, turn some quick coin and see what the greenskins may be up to!

/ooc Also my character is not as quick to distrust all orcs or other races at all. Also if I may ask a metagame type question and ask the Paladins what type of code or alignment restrictions they plan on RPing supposing I have been with each of you for some time I would suspect I would know somewhat.

I'll commit no crime nor stand with any who would. I'll have nothing to do with anything that reeks of evil, even the lawful sort, whatever that may be. I'll risk life and limb to protect the innocent. There's black and there's white and that's it.

The last isn't necessarily a requirement of the alignment, but it's how Kupa sees the world and sometimes even the lightest shade of grey is black in his eyes. Orcs are solidly on the black side of the line.

So uhmm killing a messenger/spy that may work for a noble that routinely uses assassins and brigands...that black or white?

Crime by whose laws? The law of the land? What if the law of the land enslaves a certain race.... say dwaves or kills anyone that carries a bladed weapon without permit?

Anywho food for thought, not actually looking for answers and we can RP it out a bit so its all good.

Detect Evil reveals no evil in the Messenger.

The Brothers have no actual Borders as the Empire has not been divided evenly, they have cities and towns and villages declaring their allegiance or straining to remain neutral.

The description of the brother "caught between" is in reference to pressure from two brothers rather than geographical.
"Where are you off to?"
"I don't know," Snufkin replied.
The door shut again and Snufkin entered his forest, with a hundred miles of silence ahead of him.
