NBA 2023-2024 Season + Playoffs
Ho-hum, the regular season starts today. I checked the Lakers' roster and they got a whole lotta nothing.

Re: NBA 2023-2024 Season
Anyone interested in the Tournament? @Rip ?
I'm a little annoyed that the Kings and Warriors are in the same group, after they have played 11/17 games against each other recently (that apparently includes preseason games, as well as the playoffs last year)

As to the Lakers - they are a contender if they have AD and LeBron healthy come playoff time, as always. However, that appears to be about a 24-30% shot.

Turned off the Denver Nuggets-Golden State Warriors game with about 7 minutes left because Denver was down by 16 and it was just getting frustrating af. Apparently Nuggets went on a 25-6 tear and won the game on this beauty with less than 1sec to go:

The play-in mini tournament starts today. Lakers play the Pelicans. Win and in. Lose and they get another shot against the winner of Golden State/Kings.

Re: NBA 2023-2024 Season
That last week of the regular season was pretty amazing with all the playoff jockeying. I'm hoping the Warriors can get into the 7 game serieses - they were playing so much better lately, and would be in great position if the Pelican's hadn't gone completely nuts from 3 in the 2nd quarter (I think the Pels went 10 for 12 on 3's in the quarter - everything they chucked up went in) in the penultimate regular season game.
rooting for the Heat as well (love Jaime Jacquez Jr from UCLA and how well he's done as a rook).
It sure does look like it will be Nuggets-Celtics in the finals tho.

Except Zion goes down to injury with 3 minutes left. Lakers survive in a nail biter to face...the Nuggets.

Re: NBA 2023-2024 Season
The Kings played amazing defense last night. Warriors may also have taken it a bit for granted given the Kings' injuries. Sad not to see Steph in the playoffs for more than a cup of coffee, but the Dubs did this to themselves by underperforming in the regular season in a West which got a LOT better this year.

Just imagine what their record could have been if Dreymond Green wasn't suspended all those games. They probably wouldn't be a Play-In team...Pyperkub wrote: βWed Apr 17, 2024 2:09 pmThe Kings played amazing defense last night. Eh, He's Draymond. If you're a dubs fan, you should have learned that you gotta take the idiotic with the great. Remember that the Dubs were the 6 seed in the West last year with a worse record (44-38 in 2023) than this year as the 10 seed (46-36 in 2024).naednek wrote: βWed Apr 17, 2024 6:08 pmJust imagine what their record could have been if Dreymond Green wasn't suspended all those games. The West was pretty insane this year. Having 3 teams literally tied for 1st place until the last couple of games is unheard of.

Philly lucked out in their next matchup - the Knicks without Julius Randle. Meanwhile Miami faces the winner of the Bottom of the Barrel Bowl: the Hawks (36 - 46) vs the Bulls (39 - 43).

While it would be super entertaining* to see Miami knock Boston out of the playoffs again, it doesn't seem possible that they can pull it off without Jimmy Butler.

There was quite the panic after the Celtics lost game 2. I don't even know what the psychic impact of losing a series to Miami without Butler in round 1 after such a dominant regular season. Still not likely (especially after the big game 3 win) but...terrifying to contemplate.

The Lakers definitely found something in the second half of game 4 with the double team Jokic strategy. I fully expected them to get dubbed in the second half again, but they prevented it.gilraen wrote:Panic is something fully anticipated here if Nuggets don't finish off the Lakers tonight.

Two game sevens today (Pacers - Nicks and T-wolves - Nuggets) to see who will face the Celtics and the Mavericks. I thought Celtics - Nuggets was a shoo-in. Now I'm not so sure.

Well, too bad, I don't have another link to it. Here's a shorter version:
Edit: Nuggets blew a 20-point lead and were eliminated in game 7, so I'm too pissed off to care.

Sorry, gilraen. But I have to admit, Iβm so happy to see Jokic and the Nuggets knocked out! Especially after the first half. Minnesota looked listless and Jokic was making Rudy Gobert his personal punching bag. Crazy turn around in the second half. Fun game.

Color me impressed by the Timberwolves. Porter Jr and Gordon did nothing, and those were the guys who were the difference for them the past 2 years.
And on the other side, KAT finally didn't try to play hero ball and jack up incredibly stupid 3s late in games, like he has every other time they've been in the playoffs. Their defense was lights out in all their wins.

I felt Gobert was overrated for years and just an 82 game player who was worthless in the playoffs, but he played great in this series as the backstop of one of the best defensive playoff performances I've seen since the Pistons of the early aughts.

Even Luka can be hard to root for. Sometimes he just pounds the rock for 20 seconds and hoists a shot, and they are nigh unwatchable when he does that.
Also, he pushes off every.single.time he gets into the lane for a pull up. His off arm flies out and shoves the defender away, and he rarely gets called for the offensive foul - it's annoying, and yet, he always complains he was fouled.
But when he's on, and not pulling that crap, he does some absolutely freakishly amazing things.

Side note, Halliburton was annoying the heck out of me yesterday too. On just about every one of his 3-pt shots, he would pick up his dribble, then take a couple of steps/shuffle his feet to get a better shot. I really do wish the refs would just crack down on travelling.

I saw that, too. Iβm not a huge NBA fan: I rarely watch during the regular season and just tune in for the playoffs. But the amount of egregious traveling seems to be ever increasing. I mean, I saw guys just picking up the ball cradling it in their arm like they were carrying a football, and take several steps. Like, Iβm no expert, but even I can tell thatβs traveling!Pyperkub wrote: βMon May 20, 2024 3:23 pm Side note, Halliburton was annoying the heck out of me yesterday too. Re: NBA 2023-2024 Season + Playoffs
Caitlin Clark has been playing pretty well, but struggling in the WNBA:
I watched some of that first game, and yeah, the Fever are awful (and they were going up against the conference champs who lost in the championship), even with the past 2 #1 overall picks (Boston and Clark). And they faceguarded her all over the floor, and doubleteamed her every time she got the ball, yet she still got 20 in that first game. It was pretty impressive, tho the 10 turnovers were bad (and indicative of her playing against really good teams who are a LOT better than college teams - mostly longer and more athletic, and she'll need to adjust - and the rest of the team committed a ton of turnovers too - it wasn't just her). While it's fair to wonder if Clark's style of play can translate to winning in the WNBA and result in championships, it's unreasonable for fans to think that Clark can instantly change the fortune of a team that finished the 2023-24 season at the bottom of their conference.
And, to be frank, it's pretty obvious that the Fever aren't a good team. I mean, how else do you get two consecutive No. 1 overall draft picks? The WNBA stacked Clark's schedule with marquee opponents for the sake of ratings, which was a smart move for business. The Fever's season opener generated 2.13 million viewers, which made it the most-watched WNBA game since 2001.
In turn, the players Clark is going up against are licking their chops and taking advantage of the spotlight.

No different from any #1 pick in the NBA, NHL, etc., who by definition ends up on the worst team (Wembanyama on San Antonio Spurs, for example). They can't be expected to single-handedly give the team a winning record, it's up to the front office to build a team around them, and it probably takes at least a full season to adjust to playing in the majors.

Agreed, tho even with her struggles, it is quite arguable that she did even better than Wemby did in their debuts. Wemby also didn't have to open up against 3 straight playoff teamsgilraen wrote: βMon May 20, 2024 7:52 pm No different from any #1 pick in the NBA, NHL, etc., who by definition ends up on the worst team (Wembanyama on San Antonio Spurs, for example).
