[movie] Barbie .....starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling
No info really. Just that its being filmed. And a pic of each of them in costume.
Margot looks hot in anything.

Re: [movie] Barbie .....starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling
Hear me out -
I have a daughter. When she was younger, she watched the Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures cartoon. By extension, I had to watch the Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures cartoon by virtue of it being blasted throughout the house. And you know what? It was freaking HILARIOUS.
If they can capture that same tone/humor, this could be a treat. If you don't believe me, it's on Netflix, I'm not crazy. It's a great show.

Buzzfeed
[Simu Liu] says he actually had to get his entire body waxed for the role
The film ... will also feature America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell.

Almost all of these people (including of course Robbie and Gosling) are at the top of their careers and can afford to refuse any role. This suggests that it must be a good script.

Re: [movie] Barbie .....starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling
Before Mattel introduced the Ken doll in 1961, Kenneth was in the top 25 most popular names in the US. I was 4 years old when my name subjected me Barbie & Ken jokes throughout the rest of my childhood. Now Kenneth isn't even in the top 1,000 anymore.
Thanks, Mattel. You ruined my childhood. Now you're going to spoil my dotage.

Yeah, but the same goes for other popular names. When is the last time you saw a little kid named Craig?

Only 52 boys saddled with Ken last year. 1,365 Kenneths, however. And 156 Kennys.Kraken wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 9:40 pm Before Mattel introduced the Ken doll in 1961, Kenneth was in the top 25 most popular names in the US. 122 male Craigs last year, same number as Atreyu, Azai, Elvis, Eros, Glenn, Izayah, Journey, Khamari, Kylin, Massiah, Rush, and Zaylen.

Atreyu? There some kind of cult following for that movie that names their kid that?

That's either going to be great, or it's going to suck hard. There is no in-between for this movie. It's a good cast....

Re: [movie] Barbie .....starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling
I know the feeling. I know WAY more about Barbie than any middle-aged man should probably know. And not because I have a daughter.
When I was little, my younger brother was SUPER into Barbie (I don't know why). My mom was happy to oblige because she always wanted a girl anyway. So she bought him all kinds of Barbies and clothes and stuff, and him being my brother heck, I played with them too.
Cut to years later, my mom got into doll collecting so I'd go with her to all these doll conventions and Barbie conventions. Her best friend was (and still is) a HUGE Barbie collector (I'm talking she owns literally thousands of them), so I learned all about Barbie collecting through her and going to conventions with them.
My daughter actually never got into Barbie in any real way. She had a few dolls here and there she got as gifts but she was never very interested in them. All my vast Barbie knowledge gone to waste.

I grew up next door to my cousin who was my age and a girl. She was like my sister. She is the one who passed from breast cancer at 44. We played every day when we were little. She'd play with my action figures, hotwheels, and computer and Id play with her dolls and Smurfs and such. She had a lot of Barbies too.

The only barbies my daughter played with were in video games, which she LOVED.
edit: We also had nearly every barbie movie every made, which were many, and we watched them all together, often more than once.

Re: [movie] Barbie .....starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling
My daughter saw the trailer and wants to see it (ugh...maybe I get my wife or a friend to take her, I'll pay for it, just don't make me sit through it!)
An author I follow said something to the effect she is doing a book about Barbie, but I think it's just to collect memes. I saw one today (not on her site) where a dozen different Barbies were selling for $19, but Divorce Barbie was $375 -- because it came with Ken's house, boat, car, etc.

Saw it tonight and it was really good. Fantastic to look at, very funny, touching and made you think.
There was so much going on in the group scenes it probably deserves another viewing.

I had no interest until I saw the trailer. I love reality crashing movies. We watched Enchanted last night to prepare for Barbie.
and
It was a great movie. A very intelligent script with a surprising number of thought-provoking moments. And the design and attention to detail is actually kind of overwhelming. They took great care of the whole Barbie history, and the movie makers dealt with it completely.

Re: [movie] Barbie .....starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling
Do you think my 6 year old daughter might like it? Because she wants to see it. Last movie we saw was Elementals -- the kids were pretty ambivalent towards that one. The whole story line wasn't captivating to them (and it was lame to me). At least if we go see this, it will be at the theater where they bring me a beer every time I press the button. I'll take a drink every time something stupid is said or happens.D.A.Lewis wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 2:24 am I had no interest until I saw the trailer. I love reality crashing movies. I think it's great for teens and up, but definitely NOT a kids movie. Not that it has anything explicit (the innuendos will go over kids' heads), but it deals with very mature existential stuff that kids aren't going to get. I thought it was hilarious, strange, and extremely bold, but I'm really glad my 11-year old decided to stay home.

I no longer have 'kids', but I'm curious - is this stuff that's going to bother them with questions that they shouldn't be pondering at that age, or stuff that's so far out there that kids aren't even going to notice it (ala Animaniacs?)YellowKing wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 6:47 pm it deals with very mature existential stuff that kids aren't going to get.

I guess it really depends on the kid. It talks about depression, anxiety and finding your meaning for your life. I thought it was really well done and both funny and poignant but I’m a 55 year old man.Blackhawk wrote:I no longer have 'kids', but I'm curious - is this stuff that's going to bother them with questions that they shouldn't be pondering at that age, or stuff that's so far out there that kids aren't even going to notice it (ala Animaniacs?)YellowKing wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 6:47 pm it deals with very mature existential stuff that kids aren't going to get.

The latter. I'd imagine most elementary school age kids would be bored out of their minds. This isn't a kids movie that happens to have jokes targeted towards adults. It's an adult movie exploring adult topics that just happens to be based on a kid IP.Blackhawk wrote:is this stuff that's going to bother them with questions that they shouldn't be pondering at that age, or stuff that's so far out there that kids aren't even going to notice it (ala Animaniacs?)
