Re: What are you listening to right now?
I don't find them particularly nuanced, musically or lyrically. Some of their stuff is just goofy and puerile. One of their best songs has the line "ram it up your poop shoot, you know why". And then there's Thumb Thumb, but what do you expect from Raymond Watts. It doesn't mean they weren't my favourite band in high school, or that they aren't my fifth most played artist over the past fifteen years according to last.fm. I don't mean to knock anyone's musical taste; I just consider them a guilty pleasure. They're cooler than most of the mainstream acts in a mostly dead sub-genre, sure. I like their self awareness and meta humour. But I don't bring them up at elitist gatekeeping conventions.

I was just busting your chops about KMFDM. They've never been my cuppa, but I have absolutely zero room to criticize anyone else's musical tastes.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I wasn't trying to compare them to Bruce Springsteen or Elvis Costello. But I don't see any reason to be ashamed of them if you like Industrial music. They are one of the pioneers of the style...at least in its most popular and well known incarnation (True fathers of Industrial like Throbbing Gristle really aren't that palatable to most folks). And for every line about anal probing, there are cautionary lyrics about war, nationalism, and what not. They don't set out to be Nick Cave, but I also don't think they're bubble gum pop level of song writing.
I don't like speed/death metal...but I can listen to old Big Black albums for hours. It's weird how musical tastes can vary so wildly or so little.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Not only is Atomizer a crazy good album, Albini has engineered (apparently he loathes hearing produced) a pretty good list of albums in my collection.
WRTKMFDM, I haven't listened to an album since Drug Against War, so no opinion there. I was going to see them for the first time ever with Ministry in 2020. I had no real urge to Ministry again, but I had always wanted to see KMFDM and would have liked to have see the crossover work I'm sure they would be doing. That may well have been my last ever post in "who are you seeing". Then COVID killed the ultra rare live show experience.
Though I gotta admit Roger and Peacemaker are playing in 300 person capacity bar the day after my birthday. I'm debating my first show since 2019 right now. It's mostly still a no go for me but I'm really thinking about it.

I still prefer Songs About F#@%ing, but the cover art showing up as the thumbnail made me avoid posting Bad Penny from that one (my favorite BB song).

Two dudes who have made the heaviest music around, Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost, Bloodbath) and Greg Mackintosh (Paradise Lost, Vallenfyre, Strigoi) are joining forces for a new wave, electronica, goth album that comes out next year. Oh, and it sounds awesome. Got a very Depeche Mode, Sisters of Mercy, Clan of Xymox, sort of vibe.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Blind Guardian's latest, The God Machine came out a couple of months ago. I've given it a listen, and it's definitely reminiscent of earlier in their career. It's much less progressive (perhaps in both senses) than their last few albums. But it's very welcome if you miss their 90s sound. Deliver Us From Evil is very aggressive (while retaining their operatic power metal style and harmonies), but not all of the other songs maintain this pace. In general, the hooks are definitely there but only a couple of tracks have jumped out at me on first listen.
It's a bit of a geek's dream with songs referencing The Crucible, The Kingkiller Chronicle, American Gods, The Stormlight Archive, Battlestar Galactica, The Leftovers (a personal favourite), the first novel in The Witcher series, and Hans Christian Andersen.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Saw a LOT of great live music last weekend.
Friday night I saw two terrific funk bands from Asheville. The Fritz was the opener and just blew me away, and then Dr Bacon was equally amazing.
Saturday night saw another very talented band from Harrisburg called Yam Yam.
But the real experience Saturday night was the main event, Too Many Zooz. I'd seen a number of their video clips, but nothing could have prepared me for the non-stop animalistic insanity from them playing live.
For those unfamiliar, here's a clip of them from a few years back.

Cruising through the early 1990s and was surprised to find this 1995 video of a live cover version of the Battle of Evermore by Ann Wilson from Heart and that actress from Fast Times At Ridgemont High.
I mean, damn.
(and yes I know they're The Lovemongers; heard it on the Singles soundtrack and went looking for a live version)

I'm not a huge Katatonia fan (they're OK), but I may hit this show on 11/23 just to see The Ocean Collective. They are amazing, and I've never caught them live before.
This entire song (and album) is brilliant, but the riff that blows your face off at 2:04 is maybe my favorite ever.
EVER.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Unfortunately per setlist.fm it looks like the concert will be extremely Katatonia-heavy. I have been listening to their set list and have gotten into a few songs, but they're still not my jam. Cellar Darling only got to play three songs at one of the shows due to a late start.
I'm tempted to go, but respiratory disease is really getting bad around here and paying $30+ USD for a ticket when I may not appreciate the headliner seems... unideal. I do like The Ocean's progressive sound though.

The other day, I was driving my kids to a friend's house for the weekend, and the CAAMP song, "The Otter" came on. My six-year old daughter: "Daddy, I really like this song! I didn't know boys could sing."

And they've made it onto American late night talk shows. From The Jimmy Kimmel show:Sudy wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 2:38 pmAt first I presumed they were just a joke band, but their first two albums are amazing. I love the jazz influences. I haven't heard post-punk-inspired music this good in a long time. There are so many older styles being invigorated by amazing Swedish acts recently.hepcat wrote: ↑Sun Jul 10, 2022 8:26 pm So Id posted a video for the song Sports by Viagra Boys a while back because I wasn’t sure if it was good or awful…but it made me laugh. Now that I’ve seen their latest effort, Punk Rock Loser, I’m here to say I love the band. They’re freakin’ hilarious. Like a goofier version of Idles.
On their latest album I'm enjoying Creepy Crawlers, whose unhinged vocals spout conspiracy theories from the perspective of a deranged alt-righter. The song is the soundtrack of the disturbed mind. That's followed by the mournful The Cognitive Trade-Off Hypothesis which laments mankind's ancestors descending from the trees. The chorus is especially catchy. They're both humourous tracks in their way, but they're played completely straight.
"Climbed down from the trees and we learned to speak
We lost our detailed short-term memories
But what's all of this got to do with me?
Is there some sort of connection to my ADD?"
At first I dismissed this as disconnected angst (part of the cognitive trade-off theory is that we lost short-term memory skills as a tradeoff for the development of language skills, etc.), but then I realized it's coming from the perspective of the average modern human who'd read about the decline of mankind's connectedness (as earlier lyrics reference) only to ask, "How does that help me as an individual?
