Re: Epic Games storefront: free titles
I was just about to buy Insurmountable for 50% off from the Steam store, thankfully Augmented Steam reminded me that the game was 100% off on the Epic Store. And then I saw this thread as well.
Release trailer for Insurmountable 2.0 update:

Re: Epic Games storefront: free titles
I feel that I need to come clean, uhhh, on behalf of my friend:
I bought and played maybe a few levels of the first modern X-Com game (EW, right?) probably not too long after it came out, then shelved it (had no time for gaming at that time, constantly traveling, raising three kids, etc). Bought all the subsequent titles and probably DLC as well. Recently (past month or so) decided to rectify that particular gaming error, and fired up...X-Com 2 (thinking it was the logical successor to the three games). Watched the intro and was completely lost. It seemed as if 'things' had happened that were not explained at all. That I was missing something. *shrug* Played a couple of hours maybe and realized my mistake. Shelved THAT and re-started EW proper... (again) and for reals this time. I WILL finish!

Go for it. Neither me nor my wayward gaming friend live there...location tag in my profile is a ruse, a misdirect created just for situations like this.coopasonic wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 5:18 pmI have friends in Columbia that I will send to your house and properly encourage you to invest some time in it. Oh hell. Please tell me I started playing the right one this time. I started Enemy Within (according to my recently played list on Steam).coopasonic wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 8:14 pmEU = Enemy UnknownCarpet_pissr wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 5:57 pm I bought and played maybe a few levels of the first modern X-Com game (EW, right?)
First mission which is kind of a tutorial has you rescuing some dude from a cryo chamber? Super short, and it sets you down in a small park in front a building where you bust through a glass pane to get to said guy?
I remembered playing that mission when I first bought it, so just assumed it was The First New X-Com.

Enemy Within is the right way to play it, but as Isgrimnur points out it is DLC, but it's DLC that integrates tightly with the main game much like War of the Chosen transforms the XCOM2 experience into something even better.

Great, now I have the urge to play EU/EW. I disliked X-COM 2 (they turned it from a tactical game into a puzzle game that was all about the ambush rather than firefights), but haven't played the first one in a long time.

Ok that is confusing as hell.
Xbox consoles still king of naming convention dumpster fire, but ‘The X-Coms” ain’t great.

Re: Epic Games storefront: free titles
xcom = enemy unknown
xcom+ = enemy within (expansion that impacts the entire game)
xcom2 = ok, well they decided not to give this one a subtitle
xcom2+ = war of the chosen (expansion that impacts the entire game)
xcom spinoff, I guess, NOT 3 = chimera squad - it's xcom lite, something to do while waiting for 3
Now don't go putting any hyphens in there, those are the original series!

Pretty sure that's XCOM 2. I say pretty sure because I have been skipping the intro/tutorial in xcom2 for years.Carpet_pissr wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 8:57 pm First mission which is kind of a tutorial has you rescuing some dude from a cryo chamber? Hang on! Reading the description in Steam, from the XCOM: Enemy Unknown page, the do NOT hyphenate the originals! CHAOS!!!!
ABOUT THIS GAME
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will place you in control of a secret paramilitary organization called XCOM. As the XCOM commander, you will defend against a terrifying global alien invasion by managing resources, advancing technologies, and overseeing combat strategies and individual unit tactics.
The original XCOM is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made and has now been re-imagined by the strategy experts at Firaxis Games. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will expand on that legacy with an entirely new invasion story, enemies and technologies to fight aliens and defend Earth.

Don't tell anyone, but I am the same, mostly. I tried the original well after the fact, like possibly after playing the 2012 xcom and it was very painful. I doubt nostalgia would have helped as it rarely does for me.

Re: Epic Games storefront: free titles
Nostalgia helps for me, but I didn't own a computer until 1998, and I didn't even come close to having time to catch up with every game while still learning the hobby. When I did finally try them, it was likely also after the reboots, and - well, without the nostalgia, they just didn't age well.

Didn't like them to begin with. Thought I would . I tried. But they never grabbed me at all. Still have my original in box near me though

I see Terraforming Mars is free next week. I wonder if that means a new expansion is immanent.
Edit: Sho'nough. Hellas and Elysium is about to release. I sincerely hope that is practically free but knowing Asmodee, that's unlikely. I can wait for a sale, I'm sure.

Jotun: Valhalla Edition
Redout: Enhanced Edition
Prey (2017)
I'm pretty sure that Jotun and Prey are repeats.
I can't speak to the other two, but I loved Prey. It is not a sequel to the 2006 action shooter that had so many issues. It is a completely different game. It is, in my opinion, the best 'successor' to System Shock 2 on the market. Bioshock recreated some of the mechanics, but not the atmosphere. This one nailed it.

This week the freebie is the Bioshock collection - all three games, the first two remastered, and all of the DLC.
That's a lot of good gaming material for free.

Good gosh, yes. And unlike last week's game, which it turns out I'd already bought and played in Epic , I don't have the first two games at all in Steam or Epic (just back in the Xbox days) so I might be playing through them again.
