So I guess teams can go ahead and cut all aging veterans and sketchy rookies right now, since there's no opportunity for them to play themselves onto a roster.

It makes sense to cancel the games, I guess. But I'm wondering if the preseason games would be a good test about how the virus will spread during games. Seems like something they may want to know before starting the real season...

Players aren't paid for preseason games, so the owners might want to know but the players won't get anything out of it.Ralph-Wiggum wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 10:15 am It makes sense to cancel the games, I guess. Edit: Okay, they are paid, but not the amount you would expect from the contract - just a minimal amount that hardly makes it worth it for them.

Unless you are one of the players eventually cut, in which case it could represent all of the money you will make that year.

It's about $1000/week. They better be making money elsewhere.

The DeSean Jackson thing is extremely weird - here is a thread digging into it a bit (he explains the gist of a paywalled article in the thread). Wasn't what I was expecting -

This is a made up Adolph Hitler quote from a book about Black Hebrew Israelites.
“Because the white Jews knows that the Negroes are the real Children of Israel and to keep Americas secret the Jews will blackmail America. They will extort America, their plan for world domination won’t work if the Negroes know who they were. The white citizens of America will be terrified to know that all this time they’ve been mistreating and discriminating and lynching the Children of Israel.”

Man, "cancel culture" is really getting out of hand when you can't post a (made-up) Hitler quote about the Jews without everyone getting all bent out of shape.

Re: [Uncertainty] NFL 2020 Off Season
They still have to practice don't they? If you're a coach and you can't figure out who is worth keeping on the team and who isn't just by watching them in practice then I don't think seeing them in a preseason game is going to help you. In theory sure seeing them in a preseason game might help you decide between marginal players, but in reality what do you lose by making the wrong decision on a marginal player? All you missed out on was a slightly less marginal player.
In the scheme of things, I think the most important priority if they are going to play is to keep the playoffs and Super Bowl on schedule. A lot of stuff related to that is planned well in advance, therefore it's in everyone's best interest to not mess with the schedule for those things.
This means any changes in schedule should happen at the beginning, starting with the preseason. If needed, they can cancel early regular season games too. This is assuming that people will actually get to go to playoff games and the Super Bowl. If they are going to have those games even if it means with an empty stadium then the schedule for every game can be easily moved. I'm sure the networks will broadcast the games on any day the NFL chooses. Imagine the ratings after all the pent up demand created by no sports for months.

Liquor store employee gets scoop on Mahomes contract extension:
It's the booze hotline. It wasn't Adam Schefter, Jay Glazer or Ian Rapoport who broke the story of Patrick Mahomes signing the biggest contract in U.S. sports history.
It was Chiefs fan and beer manager for a local liquor store, Katie Camlin.
Early Monday afternoon, Camlin tweeted, “A front office employee for the Chiefs came in and bought six bottles of Dom Perignon. Said there’s a big signing today. He said it’s not Chris Jones, so my guess is a Mahomes deal.”

I wonder if the Chiefs told Mahomes that they were going to subtract the cost of those bottles from his half billion dollars? I would have, just to see the expression on his face when I said it.Jaymann wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:45 pm Liquor store employee gets scoop on Mahomes contract extension:

DeSean Jackson has taken meetings with team officials and agreed to meet with a Rabbi for some further education. Sure, probably on threat of being cut, but still, that might have a good ending.stessier wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 1:02 pmThis is a made up Adolph Hitler quote from a book about Black Hebrew Israelites.

Stephen Jackson (NBA) has doubled down on the comments and was just on IG live saying as much. This is not going to end well.

I think the SEC will start. I don't think they'll finish a full schedule.
I think the NFL will try to start. I think they get 8 games before teams have to start deciding about forfeits.

As a lifelong Eagles fan and someone who was really looking forward to seeing DJaxx and Wentz light it up this season (assuming health all around), the Eagles need to suspend DJaxx. The team statement was weak-sauce:stessier wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 1:10 pmDeSean Jackson has taken meetings with team officials and agreed to meet with a Rabbi for some further education. In the end, I think it's slightly more probable that DJaxx is more stupid than anti-semitic, and his video apology seemed genuine and not PR/marketing people BS, but still . . . Consequences. We have spoken with DeSean Jackson about his social media posts. Regardless of his intentions, the messages he shared were offensive, harmful, and absolutely appalling. They have no place in our society, and are not condoned or supported in any way by the organization. We are disappointed and we reiterated to DeSean the importance of not only apologizing, but also using his platform to take action to promote unity, equality, and respect. We are continuing to evaluate the circumstances and will take appropriate action. We take these matters very seriously and are committed to continuing to have productive and meaningful conversations with DeSean, as well as all of our players and staff, in order to educate, learn, and grow.

The NFL banned jersey swaps after games. This makes total sense - because grabbing on the jersey to tackle a guy for 60 minutes is incredibly safe compared to taking that jersey home with you.

Re: [Uncertainty] NFL 2020 Off Season
More excellent news! It's good to see that the remaining issues are the easy peasy ones.
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 2h
Update on where things stand 18 days out:
— Almost everything is done and agreed to except for number of preseason games and testing protocols.
— No fans will be at training camp, but teams can have up to two fan events at stadiums this preseason with strict protocols if allowed
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 2h
Other notes:
— Where fans are allowed at games, they will wear face coverings.
— Actual training camp schedule of practices can be tied to the preseason game questions, so not there yet.
— The economics are not yet finalized, either.

The NFLPA says 72 players leaguewide were known to have tested positive for COVID-19 as of last Friday, according to information made available to players. With roughly 2,800 players currently on rosters, that represents about 2.5% of the workforce.

So, something big (and unrelated to the name) is supposed to be coming out today (or in the very near future) from the Washington Post regarding Dan Snyder and the Washington [redacted]s. Twitter is all hot and bothered. It would be reckless to speculate that this is somehow related to Jeffrey Epstein, so I certainly won't do that.

Re: [Uncertainty] NFL 2020 Off Season
I saw that pop up on Twitter a few days ago and decided I wasn't ready to believe it as there were no names (reporters or otherwise) attached to it. It'll be interesting to see what comes out. I wouldn't think something like this would have leaked as it appears to have - meaning we know something is coming, but basically nothing else.

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 12m
The Washington Post is preparing a story about its NFL team that is expected to highlight the culture that is existed. Within the past week, front office members Richard Mann III and Alex Santos, as well as radio play-by-play voice Larry Michael, all left the organization.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 12m
Washington’s NFL team hired DC attorney Beth Wilkinson to review the organization’s protocols, per league sources. While Wilkinson is expected to conduct a deep dive into the organization’s past culture, team officials are highly upset/frustrated about speculation running amok.
