Rental van.
Nothing else known.
Driver in custody.
Motive/reason not clear.
Hopefully just a medical emergency.

Re: Van ploughs into pedestrians in Toronto
Seeing that the van fled/tried to flee the scene. If true, not likely a driver medical emergency.

And yeah, he wanted to get shot, he kept "drawing" his phone. Can only guess that the cop recognized as a cell phone. Otherwise he was just damn lucky that it was.

Yeah I was just giving more examples. Canadian English is closer to British English when written. Although we mostly use tire, they use tyre.LawBeefaroni wrote:tjg_marantz wrote: ↑Mon Apr 23, 2018 4:00 pmKerb.McNutt wrote:WTF? They spell it "kerb?"

first time I've seen it spelled that way.
Sucks when it its close to home, such a cowardly act to kill innocent people going about their day like that. Very sad.

Yep, looks like a suicide-by-cop attempt to me.
We had one here last night. A guy rode around on a moped shooting an airsoft gun at at least 4 cop cars. They arrested him when he crashed his moped into a car. He asked the cops to kill him.

Oddly enough, it's been spelled "plow" for as long as I can remember, which is very significantly longer than Trump has been a public figure of any sort. Odd, that, almost like Trump has absolutely nothing to do with this situation at all. So someone is allowed to rejoice about him spending a lot of time in jail and I'm not allowed to comment on that? I didn't make my comment in a vacuum. And if you're referencing my posts with Enough in the Earth Day thread then you obviously missed that I was making light of the internet.
Take your advice somewhere else.

Did he do it just so they would kill him? What a selfish bastard. If thats the case then simply set up suicide booths. Go into a cylinder shaped stainless steel booth, answer some questions, talk to a video conference professional, then after 10 min if all is to order you push a button that somehow kills you and flushes your corpse to a receiving center through a bank like tube. Stop killing others just so you can die.

That's been a thing since 1893 so you're in good company. Vonnegut introduced the idea to me. They're usually dystopian, but we're living in a dystopia so that's fine with me.

For what it's worth, I always spell it curb. It's indeed a curious mix of British and American, but I think we've shifted to mostly American, save for the "u" in neighbours, saviour, flavour.
So the workplace was a bit of a somber mood yesterday but we're pretty much back to normal today. I personally don't get the whole "Toronto Strong" thing, it's one random, mentally-disturbed person. It's tragic, but in society today, shit like this happens.

Re: Van ploughs into pedestrians in Toronto
So, I work in an office building less than 1500 feet north of where the attack began. I also live about 5km away from the perpetrator's house in the same suburb north of Toronto (up until last year, about half as far away). It's been surreal.
I wasn't at work yesterday, but I had coworkers who could see the aftermath from the windows of our building. I heard one of our staff may have been at street level around when it occurred, but I can't confirm. There was also a panic when a co-worker who was also off duty but lives nearby couldn't be found after a long dog walk during which she left her phone at home, but thankfully she was found safe.
No one in my circle of acquaintances was directly affected, thankfully. But as it's probably common to think, it could have been any one of us. While I don't think I've ever walked down that side of the street (we only moved to this building late last year), I'm frequently blasting my headphones as I walk from the nearby bus terminal to the office. I was south of where the attack started on the other side of the street a little over a week ago, buying an ice scraper from a gas station for a friend on the day of the ice storm, and getting a slice of pizza for lunch.
I think my response is largely rational.... It could have been me, or someone I know. But it could have been anyone. Death can come at any moment. Life goes on. Still, I can't help but feel an element of shock. I can't imaging living in a part of the world where such violence is a part of daily life, reminding me of a good friend and co-worker who's Afghan. Mind you, there's no direct relation between the cause of that kind of violence and what seems to have transpired here. But the effect is the same.
As I commuted south to work this morning, I couldn't help thinking it was probably the same route the killer took just hours earlier. I tried to imagine what could possibly have been going through his head at the time, as he saw the same sights and passed by the same buildings.
With so much senseless violence in Colorado in recent years, these must be thoughts many of OO's CO contingent have had. (Coincidentally, my company has a branch in Denver.)

Re: Van ploughs into pedestrians in Toronto
From what I'm reading (depressing stuff), the worldview of the "true believers" is twisted far beyond what that would accomplish. To generalize, anyone other than a virgin is a "slut", but since the incels are doomed to be ignored, even those they deem pure are dismissed as sluts-to-be. Unless it's trolling (and at this point, I doubt it matters because it's influencing the impressionable among them), there are legitimate calls for government-regulated girlfiends/sexual partners, which I presume sounds like something out of The Handmaid's Tale (which I haven't read nor watched).
This is a deeply disturbed subculture that seems to be on par with a cult. The 21st century's online extremist echo chambers may as well be that.
