USS Mannert L. Abele

The USS Mannert L. Abele was operating off the northern coast of the Japanese island of Okinawa on April 12, 1945, when it suddenly found itself "surrounded by hostile planes,” the Naval History and Heritage Command said in a news release this week, as it announced the ship had been identified Thursday.

After the Sumner-class destroyer engaged with and damaged multiple enemy aircraft, a plane managed to crash next to it, penetrating its side, the command said, adding that a minute later it was “at the waterline by a Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka.”

The ship was found in December by a group called the Lost 52 Project, which searches for Navy submarines and warships sunk during World War II.

Two 500-year-old shipwrecks in the South China Sea, filled with Ming-era porcelain and stacked timber, provide significant clues about the maritime Silk Road trade routes, Chinese archaeologists have said.

The two shipwrecks were discovered in October, and cultural and archaeological authorities have now begun a year-long process of deep-sea exploration and excavation, government officials announced.

Well, somebody is apparently into it:

tl;dr: A known Chinese salvage ship has been spotted at the sites of the sunken battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse off the coast of Malaysia. It seems that they are just in it for the metal, and of course they're ignoring the fact that the ships are the resting place of many British sailors.

An illegal Chinese salvage operation is raiding two United Kingdom World War II warship wrecks off the coast of Malaysia for scrap steel, aluminum and brass fittings, prompting a statement of concern from the Royal Navy, USNI News has learned.

Chuan Hong 68 used a large dredging crane to pluck scrap from the wrecks of battleship HMS Prince of Wales (52) and battlecruiser HMS Repulse, according to local press reports. Both were sunk on on Dec. 10, 1941, days after Pearl Harbor, by Japanese bombers, resulting in the loss of 840 sailors.

On interesting thing about this:

The metal in sunken WW1 and WW2 warships is in some way valuable because ocean water shielded it from the effects of postwar nuclear weapons testing. Sunken ships are thus a source of "low-background metals."
