Railroad Empire 2

Came out yesterday. Only played first tutorial, but they definetely streamlined track placement\switches. Makes things a little more automatic. I'm sure the purists probably don't like the changes, but it's nice not having to spend a lot of time trying to figure out why your train is stuck.

Graphically looks similar to the original. Has the same feel, and the music is great. Hoping to spend to a lot of time with it as I did the original.

They cleaned up a lot of the switch stuff in the original. If they improved the the meta game, with the economy and stocks and such let me know. I assume the biggest improvement would be in optimizing for better machines. The original bogged and would crashed when you got too big.

For we who never played the first one, how do these compare to the Railroad Tycoon series?

The original eventually had a very good track laying and town growth supply system. The computer opponents were terrible, the economy and stock situation was an afterthought and pointless part of the game, and they had a neat concept for hiring railroad staff with interpersonal relationships though it quickly becomes too much juggle. The tech tree is also interesting.

I think it was free on Epic if you collect and never play Epic games.

RT II is still king though it the track and town system in RE was a better implementation. If that's all you want then you'll really enjoy the game. If you want to build companies and be baron to crush your competition, it's a failure, not merely a disappointment.

I enjoy good empire-building and business sims. I don't just want a sandbox train set. Does RE2 have a scenario-based campaign, like RT did, or does one build a continuous sprawling empire instead?

it has 5 campaigns. 3 in US, 2 in Europe.

It's very similar to Railroad Tycoon. They simplified track laying which was usually what made the game tedious. It's a welcome addition in my eyes.

I played this off and on today while at work (shhh) I'm liking it so far.

Thanks, that's all I wanted to know. This game is on my radar now if I ever want a break from Stellaris.
