Help me get rid of this concrete plant stand (photos)

Post by jztemple2 »

My wife got this concrete planter some time ago, long ago, and she's finally decided to get rid of it. Trouble is, it is well over a hundred pounds so the trash folks won't touch it. Leaving it on the street, no one wanted it either, even though folks pick up all sorts of stuff from the road side here. I figure if I could break it into smaller pieces I might be able to put it in several bags or cans, but whacking on it with a hammer didn't do much of anything. Any constructive, ah, concrete  suggestions on how to get rid it of it? I could barely tip it to get it onto that trolley, so anything requiring lifting it is out of the question.

I'd say sledgehammer. I assume when you said hammer, it was a smaller one.

Unfortunately all I have is a five pound sledge and not even a decent chisel :(

Get a quote from a suitable construction debris removal service in your locale, and just have them take care of it for you.

Keep hitting it. I've taken out concrete stairs with a sledge before. It felt like the blows were doing nothing for a while but it finally started cracking. After that it went fast. A hammer drill with masonry bits might be able to speed up the process but I've never tried it.

Roll it into the far corner of the yard and cover it with either a brush pile or ivy.

Given where you live, I'd imagine a solution involves a drill and some fireworks.

I submit you should reconsider destroying it. Re-purpose it, or refresh/renew it.

Maybe some paint or concrete stain could make it look better than before.

Normally I'd say dig a big hole, put thing in, cover with dirt.

Being that this is in the land of terrifying sinkholes, I'd say don't so that.

Here in Chicago, we would tie a rope around it, bring it to the river, tie the other end of the rope to the ankle of someone you have a grievance with, and..,profit!
