It has my vote. I think I've probably made that abundantly clear by now. :D

The changes to aiming really help. It's now like the sniping button on some mice; you push a button to essentially hold your breath, which slows down the movement of the barrel and gets rid of a lot of the jitter. I found it to be far more enjoyable than previously.

And I also like to just relax after a run and clean my guns.

Finished Mafia II (main story - not doing extra content at this point). It never quite reached the heights of the first Mafia (although it's been probably 20 years since I played that, so maybe I'm colored by nostalgia here), but it also had fewer areas where I was frustrated by lack of save points. Definitely not one to play within earshot of the kids, what with the period/character appropriate profanity and racial slurs.

Finally finished Rebel Galaxy. Not Outlaw, the first one. I noticed that I only have 11 more achievements to complete and the ones requiring me to do "X" things are almost done. So I'll keep this on the drive and casually make my way through all the achievements. In the meantime, on to Rebel Galaxy Outlaw!

Finished Bioshock Infinite. I don't think I ever finished the second Bioshock, but I enjoyed this one. I was surprised by the save system, but in practice and in combination with how it handled dying (good Lord< I had a lot of green mystery juice injected into me by Elizabeth), it wasn't problematic. The final battle was extremely tough, but I made it through.

Finished Half Life 2. I think this is the 3rd time I've played it, but it'd been a while. I'm going to try to play the next one (is it Chapter 1?), but that may depend on how good the Steam Deck support is for it. It's only "Playable" and not "Verified".

FWIW, I'd suggest using ProtonDB.com for more detailed per game info on Steam Deck support, e.g. the ProtonDB entry for Half-Life 2: Episode One indicates it runs perfectly out of the box, since it runs natively on Linux.

Finished Dishonored. I was in the mood for a Thief type of sneaker, so I grabbed this one I had missed. I played it mostly non-lethal and ended up with a Low Chaos ending. The ending was a bit anticlimactic (and very easy), but overall the game was very good. I may do some of the bonus elements at some point, but not just yet.

I highly recommend Dishonored 2. It contains what is probably my favorite level ever.

Finished this one last night:

Pretty good game. Xcom-ish. Decent story line. Difficulty ramps up as you progress but can be mitigated by being quick to finish the objectives.

Finished Max Payne 3. It's been ages since I visited the world of Max Payne, so I jumped back into bullet time action. It's pretty much what you expect from Max Payne - waves of enemies punctuated by slo mo shooting. Honestly, it got a bit tedious at times since there was no real variety to the levels outside of the scenery. Some levels would start with talk of needing to sneak around, but I don't think that was actually possible - it was guns blazing after encountering the first baddie. I spent most of the game shooting from cover rather than running around and using bullet time. Fun enough, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.

You need to play Black Mesa if you haven’t already. Incredible remake/mod/overhaul.

“Black Mesa is a 2020 first-person shooter game developed and published by Crowbar Collective. It is a third-party remake of Half-Life (1998) made in the Source game engine. Originally published as a free mod in September 2012, Black Mesa was approved for commercial release by Valve, the developers of Half-Life. The first commercial version was published as an early-access release in May 2015, followed by a full release in March 2020 for Linux and Windows.”

Finished Return to Castle Wolfenstein (realRTCW Vanilla Plus mod). I never played the original, so given the age, decided to use a mod to bring it closer to modern gaming (both UI and textures, etc). Fantastic experience. Reminded me a lot of playing NOLF without the humor.

Since I actually finish a game like this once every several years probably, I now remember why: the time required is just insane. I honestly don't see how some of you with jobs and kids and wives and houses play so much?! I wish I had that time! :D Really enjoyed it, even if I did put off QUITE a few items on my "to do" list in order to power through it (which means over the course of several weeks for me :D)

Fantastic remake (?) if anyone is interested that never played the OG. Looks and plays great in 2023. 8/10 (for reference I would put the Black Mesa remake at 9/10, maybe 10/10). 25.5 hours according to Steam. Black Mesa took me 44 hours, and I felt that it would never end. 15-20 hours or less is probably the sweet spot for me. I need to start filtering my backlog based on that, maybe.

I'm a bit tired of blowing away zombie Nazi's so I am not sure what to play next. Maybe switch up genres and try to finally finish the last Broken Sword game (nothing wrong with it at all, I just had a hiccup with a save game when I started it many years ago, and never restarted it). I will admit to at least downloading The New Order (Wolfenstein) just to see what a modern game in the series looks and plays like, comparatively. Very curious.

I'm surprised at how much gaming I've actually been able to do since I started up again earlier this year. Basically, I grab my Steam Deck when I'm done with my chores for the evening after the kids go to bed. My wife's chemo has her either going to bed early or falling asleep on the couch, so I more or less decide whether I'm going to watch something or play something - often watching something first and then starting up a game. I've usually got one main game going at a time, with a few backups for when the main game starts to feel like a slog.

I average about an hour of TV a day (wife time). I don't watch sports. My kids main hobby is also video games. My house requires about... ummm... well I change air filters every 6 months and smoke detector batteries every year, that's about it. My wife knows that I am not sitting with her to watch Hallmark movies or daytime talk shows (on days she isn't working herself, she's been part time since our first was born 17 years ago). On a weekday, I can generally get 3.5-4 hours of gaming time in and still get 8 hours of sleep.

Finished; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge.

It's a good retro side scroller, but super short. Available on gamepass, I'd be very hesitant to pay the $25 asking price.

I got Autonauts a while back from the Amazon Prime Gaming and finally decided to try it. It's one of those "cute" automation / builders, but cuteness only goes so far, and some stuff could be better handled, resulting in boredom and frustration about 2 hours in.

Basically, the planet is randomly generated, and you're some sort of an automation specialist that can build infrastructure from just the native stuff (trees, etc.) and your way is to pave the way to new settlements by start building stuff.

At the beginning, you have to do everything yourself, building some crude stone axes, whatnot, then finally, with just some logs, planks, and whatnot, you can build a robot that you can program. (Hmmm...) which has rudimentary logic that can find basic items, and move them to certain places. So you start building workbenches, pallets to stack the intermediate items (logs, planks, poles), then process the intermediate items. Seems easy enough...

THEN the limitations starts to hit. Wait, the search area (where it would go to find things to do) is only 12 x 12? Yep, won't step a square beyond. Then you realize the tools WEAR OUT! So you have to build new ones. After a while you run out of "rocks" in the immediate vicinity, and there doesn't seem to be any more rocks around... THEN they finally show you that if you have built some pickaxes you can "dig" a boulder or "stones" ground to create more rocks (which you can turn into more tools)

Then it just got tedious instead of interesting. One of the objectives was to build 10 robots, except for EACH robot, you have to drag like 10 pieces of ingredients to the robot bench, and you have to do this yourself because your robots are too stupid to do more than ONE thing in an infinite loop. THEN even that one thing goes nuts.

The tutorial have you making 3 robots, a chopper (chops down trees, needs stone axe), a digger (digs holes, needs stone spade), and a planter (replants trees, don't need tools). Each has just enough logic to search the area and do its job. So it's pretty obvious your additional robots are just transporters... Go in, grab stuff (logs), bring them back out to storage (pallets), then another robot will have to take it from storage to workbench. Then another from workbench to storage (and no mixed storage either, each pallet is only for one type of item). Given that you can't build like 5 robots together, but must do one at a time, this starts to get frustrating, with severe lack of QoL automation, when the game's about automation.

In a normal "city builder" type game, a settler / worker, once you set him to the task, s/he will do the task automatically until it can't, then it goes idle, and to build one you simply click a button, This one you have to grab the ingredients yourself and toss them onto the workbench yourself.

I got to robot 7, and suddenly I can't seem to program them anymore. I can't clear the program, even though it says cleared. I hit record again, nothing happens on screen. After a while, this game is just no longer interesting to play. The automation had broken down. When the game's about automation, this is just... ridiculous.

Finished Jedi Fallen Order last night.
I liked it and plan on eventually getting Survivor.
I absolutely HATED those stupid slides. Besides being difficult for me in general they also lock the camera in the worst way possible. I can't even remember how many times I had to redo them. I think I literally spent at least 30 minutes on a couple. I really think game companies need to offer more options for the disabled. They are on the right track by letting us turn off quick time events but some of us just want to get through the story and they make it way too difficult.
I enjoyed the story over all but could do without the artificial game time increases like having to keep going back to different areas to progress the story.
I would prefer something like if I make it to section 23 then when I go back let me just jump right there. It can be an option in case some people want to do it over. Plus the whole areas not accessible because you are missing a specific power thing means I won't get 100% on any games because I don't want to have to run around the same areas to try to find tjings I couldn't do on the girst pass through. I did do some detours when I HAD to go back through anyway but I didn't go out of my way.
Anyway, even with the rant, I enjoyed it enough to finish which I don't do too often.

I finished two games last night!

First, I finished Styx: Master of Shadows. This has very little to do with rivers to Hades or Mr. Roboto. Rather, it's a sneaker where you play as Styx, who is some sort of stunted orc-like creature (it all becomes more clear toward the end). This took a long time to play (over 60 hours, per my Steam Deck), in no small part due to combat being extremely challenging. Basically, if you have to fight more than one bad guy at a time, you're in trouble (at least, I was). You can have a very limited number of throwing knives for distance kills, but then you have to dispose of the body before it alerts everyone. This meant a lot of reloading when I would get discovered. The levels are also very large and have multiple ways to get through them, which led to me getting lost and/or doubling back quite a bit to get where I was supposed to go. It's a testament to the game, though, that I kept going despite all of this. It never tipped from challenge to frustration.

Second, I finally finished Call of Juarez - Gunslinger. It's an old West FPS where you play Silas Greaves. It's basically him in a saloon telling stories about all the battles he had to go through while seeking revenge. It's not particularly deep, but it's got good action and some skill building. Each level ends with a duel. I never felt like I fully got the hang of the mechanics (I think it might have been easier on mouse and keyboard), but I managed to win each duel without drawing first, so I was always "honorable". I got stuck for quite some time on the final battle in the graveyard, but I went back to it after finishing Styx and managed to power through. It took me about 30 tries to actually finish the final "Mexican standoff" duel, but I got there. My biggest issue was that the audio on the cutscenes was horribly mangled. Fortunately I could follow along with the subtitles.

Finished another game with my daughter tonight.
Moving Out 2. I have a feeling we are going to play this thing to death though (just like we did the first one), so I'm not even close to seeing the last of this one. At the very least, we're going to find and unlock the rest of the characters.

I actually finished a game this year - Jagged Alliance 3.

Looking back over my list that I've actively played this year, I've played two MMOs, several multiplayer only games, several coop mission based games with no real 'end', a couple of strategy games, a few open world survival games, and have abandoned several titles.

All of that makes for a short list of finished games.

Despite being knee-deep in Baldur's Gate 3 and Starfield coming to GamePass tomorrow, I haven't been able to stop playing....

Lord of the Rings Online.

Weird, I know, but I randomly ran across a "Should you play LOTRO in 2023?" YouTube video and I was surprised that the game was still going strong. LOTRO has always been one of my favorite MMOs so I decided to give it a whirl again.

While the game went free to play many years ago, apparently for the 15th anniversary they opened it up a lot more to non-subscribers and re-tooled quests to make the game's main storyline pretty much solo-able from start to finish. I think the only thing really locked behind a paywall now is a couple of classes and the usual cosmetics/XP boost optional things.

Anyway I'm having a blast with it. With the high-res pack the graphics, while still dated, are not terrible, and it's been a joy wandering through my old stomping grounds. It's certainly one of the most relaxing MMOs out there, and I've been perfectly content delivering pies across the Shire and doing other mundane quests while listening to music or watching TV.

Finished Dishonored 2. I played as Emily to get a different feel from the first game. As with the first, I went non-violent (assuming you consider rendering dozens of guards unconscious non-violent) and I ended up with a low chaos rating at the end. The final bits were far more challenging than in the first game, which I found to be a bit easy. I feel like I missed a fair bit of things because I never really messed around with bone charms (other than activating those things that seemed interesting) or building up my abilities with runes too much, but considering I was still able to make it through the whole thing I guess they weren't really needed. Overall I had a lot of fun with the franchise.

I feel like I missed a fair bit of things because I never really messed around with bone charms (other than activating those things that seemed interesting) or building up my abilities with runes too much, but considering I was still able to make it through the whole thing I guess they weren't really needed. Overall I had a lot of fun with the franchise.

The level where you go back and forth in time? I thought that was really unique and well done.
And the house with the changeable rooms. Now I can't remember if those are the same level or not. If not, then I guess it had 2 of my favorite levels ever. :)

I think that's the same level. You can jump back in time to modify something and then go back to present and the room will have been changed. Butterfly effect and all that.

Totally legit with about ~ 500 hours in EA. Now I am over 1,015 hours so over 500 since full release.

So when I finished Tactics Ogre, I thought that I was going to play (emulated) Brigandine. Turns out, that one didn't stick at all. Didn't know about the relatively freeform/kingdom war structure. And I really looking for something more linear/mission based. So I've ended up playing Symphony of War - The Nephilim. I'm four chapters in, and enjoying it so far.

The second addition to the playlist was totally unexpected, but I'm wasting way more time with LOTRO than I have in ages. I had a newsfeed article about the latest festival event, and those often entertain me. So I played a little. And then a little more. And then a lot more. I do have the lifetime VIP membership so the perks help. This is probably just satisfying my seasonal MMO phase (rather than often-played FFXIV) but I'll take it.

So that makes the latest playlist:
LOTRO
MLB:The Show
Symphony of War - The Nephilim
Trails in the Sky - SC (This has been on the back-burner a bit, but not really to abandon. About 1/2 through)
