I'll jump into the conversation this year. I've been gradually putting on weight for a number of years and currently weigh more than I ever have in my life. Ten years ago, I made an effort to get in the best shape of my life and run a half marathon. I was down to 150# and felt great. Now I'm tipping the scales 40lbs higher, feel horribly out of shape, and hate that I have to buy clothes bigger just so they don't cling to my expanding belly. It's time for change, so I've set a goal to get back in shape and run the Hartford Half-marathon in October...ten years after I did it the first time.

Let's see how it goes!

I wish you luck with that. I dont have plans to run anywhere not even the mailbox but I do feel worse for the weight and miss being proud of being a good weight. I bought smaller clothes and enjoyed the large shirts and 36 pants. But now Im back to xl and 38. I hate it. I felt better and life was easier. My health was better as well as my mentality towards it all.

Current weight loss streak is completely dietary, and nothing drastic. Trying to do smaller portions, and no fast food this week. The latter is the hardest part because having two kids in the household with after school activities means a quick swing by McDonald's is often in the cards.

I'm still walking the dog daily, but haven't started back my running. And the rowing has been wildly inconsistent, trying to get back on that daily even if it's just 10 minutes.

According to Lose It, if I go outside and walk another 3000 steps, I can eat a handful (27) of Cheese Its before bed tonight. Nine days in and today is first day I'm challenged with wanting more food than my allotment and water isn't cutting it and there is quite a bit of time between now and bedtime.

Also, I find that 54 Cheese Its at about 300 calories eaten one at a time along with two tall glasses of water is the perfect light calorie snack for me. If I can keep 300 calories saved before bed, that is quickly becoming my nightly treat. Today, I did not have that reserve, unless I walk another 6000 steps... Hmmm...

Edit, actually if I shovel the driveway a second time today, that should earn me those 27 Cheese Its. That might happen.

Cheeze Its are a food I avoid because 1 serving = 1/2 box.

I'm hoping to join this thread sometime in Feb when things settle down.

Oh do I know it. Obsessive calorie counting is all about in my face portion control. Most of the time I end up about the 2000-2200 calories recommended but there are nights before bed where 2000 calories of night time snacking get added to that 2000 calories and I'd  a box or bag of chips things or cookie things. I now have the huge CostCo/BJ's box of Cheese its because for $4.50 I have an enduring supply that I can only eat 54 in a sitting and only if I save 300 calories at the end of the day.

I'm glad to finally be back in this thread. The last time I was here was years ago because 230 was way too much then. This time on heavy days, I was on cusp of breaking 270 and my 2XLs were getting tight. I am not going to 3XLT (if I can find them) to say nothing of how 260many feels on my knees and ankles and heart.

My snacking strategy is to look at the serving size and take half of that. Eat it slowly. If I'm still hungry 15 minutes later, I have the other half. Unfortunately I favor calorie-dense snacks like nuts and corn chips, so those half-servings are barely a good mouthful.

Not that you should take diet advice from me.... :P

I've been walking to youtube videos inside but have been doing aerobic walks for short durations rather than a 90 minute walk outside. Better than nothing. It gets my heart rate up but I'm lucky to get in 5,000 steps a day much less 10,000. When I bundle up and the walks are clear enough, I'm good to walk in the mid 30s. But when we are in the 10s and people aren't shoveling and my snow boots aren't really good walking, I wuss out. As time goes by , I'm likely to get better and better apparel for walks for all weather, but for now I'm indoors during real cold/windy. I also still have my body plumbing issues to work around when planning my long walks.

I had to set rules for myself to avoid wimping out when I just don't feel like it. I never get back from a walk and say 'I wish I hadn't done that', but it's hard to motivate that first step off the porch some mornings.

I walk if the temp is at least 35 degrees (30 if it's sunny and calm) and below 80 at 9 a.m.; if it's not actively raining or snowing or likely to start doing either; if the pavement isn't slippery; if I'm not sick; and if I don't have a schedule conflict (I try not to make morning appointments for anything, but sometimes they're unavoidable) or a client deadline to meet.

When the weather's nice, I sometimes walk 15-20 days in a row. When it's not, I sometimes go weeks without walking.

If we move to a bigger house as we hope to do I'm going to put in a treadmill. No room for one here.

I finally broke down and got a good calorie counter app and will start logging food (currently using CalorieCounter+ by NutraTrack which was the Forbes Health top pick). Trying to just spitball on it on my own was not working.

My wife has been using a calorie tracker for the past couple of weeks to good success, so hopefully with both of us keeping ourselves accountable we'll make some progress.

It makes all the difference in the world to me. 1) We (and specifically I) aren't good at estimating denying ourselves what we want concurrent with over estimating how much increased activity leads to weight loss. 2) A counter gives me measureables to strive for and achieve, unto obsessive behavior. To go over my budget is to do so very consciously and to feel the guilt associated with that decision, even as an exceptional treat.

Just thought you all might like to know that if you eat fewer calories you can lose weight. Who knew?

One week into strict calorie counter usage and boy what a difference. Two pounds down and I'm back under 200. :horse:

I went with a 1lb/week goal of 2000 calories a day, though I've been coming in under that due to the walking/rowing. The two biggest changes I think the calorie counter has helped with is avoiding snacking (I never felt like I snacked all that much, but I think I just didn't realize how here and there it added up). Second is just making better choices - it keeps me from mindlessly having fast food for lunch and pizza for dinner.

The new scale has arrived and I can re-enter the thread.

Last year my goal was 85kg / 187 lbs. I'd hit it by the end of Nov but then the scale died and between the holidays and my planned move it wasn't a priority to get a new one. Now we are in the new house, with a new scale, and past Fat Tuesday so it is time for a new baseline and a new goal. My 2023 Goal is 82kg (180lbs but my wife has decided that she really likes having the scale in kg and I'm not going to argue). That isn't a big loss but to me this year is about transitioning to a steady state. I'm off to a good start as this morning I did the first check and it was 84.8kg.

Date Weight (kg)

I suppose this is just one of those weeks I have to trust the process. I was losing 2.5 of my .5 planned pounds a week. That couldn't last forever. I was hoping to have progress every week, though. If I stall too long, I'll have to move the goal to a pound a week on the tracker. That will hurt. I already feel like this is more restriction than I want and I want this to eventually become a my lifestyle, not a means to an end. Even so, calorie counting has increased my activity. I'm walking over 4 miles every day, except for days where I am forced to sit most of the day and I'm still doing this while keeping my calorie count at 2,100 or less.

Almost to my goal of 82kg! That's what a week of being sick and a small goal does. If I end up staying at this weight through the end of the month I'll think about adjusting my goal at 80kg which is pretty much my personal ideal mass even if it is still at least 10 pounds over what the BMI tables say is optimum.

Been doing the calorie restriction for maybe a month and a half now and today is first truly bad day for me. I've already had lunch. I waited until I was hungry. (something I do since calorie counting) It was a 1000 calorie pasta, meat, and cheese dish and not an hour later I'm feeling ravenous. I have well less then a thousand calories to get through the day and the day isn't even half done. If I were way way further into this process, I'd breakdown and figure out how to deal with the caloric overeat splurge later but I don't want to let bad habits take root this early when I am trying to lose nearly 100 pounds over the long haul.

Good news, even the discount candy at Ollies is now priced at more than I'm willing to pay.
