I purchased the original a while back and it is...more puzzle-y than I had thought. I had assumed (incorrectly, apparently) that it was basically a 3rd person action game, but if feels like 50/50 fighting and random puzzle solving. I'm assuming this continues the general design?

They did the same thing to me with the Tomb Raider reboots. I loved the original (reboot) but the last time I tried playing the most recent title I just gave up. Too much jumping and swinging and then pulling the right levers and pushing the right buttons. Not into that at all.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Interesting. I was on the fence about buying GoW for the PC, but if it has alot of Mario type jumping, I'll pass.

It's not jumping - not like the new DOOM game. But there's lots of button/lever puzzles. Not sure if that's just how it starts or if I should expect that for the entire game. Sometimes jumping has been involved, but mainly to get to additional buttons or levers. :D

What I remember the most is figuring out how to shoot three targets that can be hard to find and get a line of sight on in a very short amount of time. There isn't really much platforming, but there is a good bit of figuring out how to progress and the fighting, as I recall, is more about set pieces than constant battle, so more god of light puzzles.

What coop said. I was pleasantly surprised at God of War. I normally like the idea of the games, but they've always felt more twitch based than actual strategy. God of War completely changed that up for me and I ended up playing through it over the course of a few months (it's a fairly long game). It's the first and only game in the series I've finished....or even played for more than an hour.

What struck me was the brilliance of the puzzles. At no point was I stuck going "what the hell am I supposed to do now" for longer than a few minutes. They leave so many great clues that you eventually figure things out.

Also, upgrading your weapon, your armor, your skills? <chef's kiss>

There's plenty of fighting! Those Valkryie fights, man. And yes, I did all of them.

The Valkyrie fights are 100% optional, as I recall. I think I may have beaten one and tried another, but not 100%. I was more interested in the story than the combat.

Yeah, I never found the combat particularly difficult, except for when it came to those valkyries. The difficulty on those was much greater than most of what you face throughout the regular game.

And I agree with you, Hep. It's a brilliant game. I'd never played any of the others in the series, but there was something about this one that made the gameplay feel much more alluring and satisfying. At times, it actually feels like you're playing a movie. The father and son dynamic made for some fun moments.

To be fair, you started by saying you agree with hepcat so I see this as a circular agreement situation. Honestly I am a little concerned about the stability of the time space continuum now.

Obviously we can't all agree about everything, but always nice when we can find something to agree on :)

You know, with God of War, I had my reservations. Going in, I didn't think I was going to like it, or even like it as much as I did, given that was my first God of War, and that I hadn't been attracted to playing any of the others. But it's the type of game that subverted expectations. I found myself loving the father/son dynamic and kept wondering where it would go next and found it rather deep for the type of game that it was. I mean sure, on some level it's just an action game, but it does a great job of hitting that sweet spot.

Oh, they were, but I loved the game so much that I wanted to get the platinum trophy (my one and only for a PS game), which required the Valkyrie fights.

The main story boss fights were almost too easy in comparison to how challenging the Valkyrie fights were.

I remember beating my first Valkyrie, and while it was tough, I still felt it was manageable. Then I went in search of the other ones and they showed who's boss. :D

It's almost like they made the first one easy enough, to lure people in to doing the others. Because that difficulty spike was insane.

i suspect the combat difficulty do depend lot on level as my first valkyrie fight take me more than few try to get pass her at around 3~4 lev. by the time fouth n fifth valkyries i can get pass at first try at around lev 6~7. i dont think my combat skill have improve so much over the course of the game. As some realm tear i cant get through at lower level, when i come back later i dont even break a sweat. i am look at you purple traveler. So level are more important than skill.

just hope the new game have fewer throwing axe unlock chest puzzle.
BTW how long do it take to grind all the echo to open all Niflheim tears. as now after about 5+ hours still not fully upgrade the mist armor yet.

I put 2 hours in this morning. So far it's more of what made the 2018 version great, so that is good. The aging of Atreus seems pretty natural and it's not jarring at all, considering that at the end of the 2018 version Kratos and Atreus went to sleep for about 3 years. I'm playing on the PS5 with the high visual setting and graphically it is pretty amazing to look at. I really don't notice the frame rate being in the 30s, my guess is it consistently runs in the 40's at this setting.

This fps guess is spot on. My OLED has VRR and I can flip up the current frame rate being matched on screen.

Yeah it's a weird thing, I can usually tell when games run at around 30 FPS because they just feel sluggish to me, but get it to run around 40 and I can't tell the difference between 40 and 80.

I'm on the fence with this one. The review are excellent and I have traditionally loved the series. However, the last God of War was the first game in the series that simply didn't grab me at all. I tried it multiple times and could just never get into it. I ended up either bored or frustrated (or both) within the first 5-6 hours every time.

Sounds like this one is MOTS, so I'm leery about jumping in. We'll see...

It is MOTS, so if that's how you were with the 1st one then you may want to wait for a sale or the eventual PS+ monthly game release.

Haven't played my PS5 is maybe 6mos or more?
Messed up the R1 / L1 and that meant Freya broke my neck in the 1st 2-3 mins. Great start!
But really liking the game - played maybe an hour or so last night and its hitting all the right feels for me in terms of the complete GoW games.
While feeding all the beasties out back I let a nice big fart. The smell followed all the way back to the house. It's like it was my baby and felt abandoned.

Without going into spoilers I'm at a part in the game where you get to control Atreus and I can say without a doubt the storytelling in Ragnarock is excellent. They have really upped their game in that department over the 2018 game.

Looks like Gamestops have a lot of the GoW:R bundles (both digital and disc) right now. I was just looking online on a lark and noticed a dozen at the Gamestop near me. Just ran down and grabbed the disc version as I've been sitting on about 200 bucks in trade credit from when I traded in my old xbox one x. Set up was surprisingly fast, and the download for GoW:R finished in record time. Going to play a bit tonight.

Picked this up on Thursday and put in just under 10 hours over weekend. While it is mostly MOTS, I find that I like this version quite a bit more for two reasons:

1. Teenage Atreus is far less annoying than child Atreus.
2. So far, I have yet to run into a puzzle or situation where I couldn't figure out where to go or what to do. That happened to me constantly in the last game, and I always ended up super frustrated.

Playing on Story difficulty means I can have fun in combat and still feel like a badass without dying every 30 seconds, which also helps. So far, I'm enjoying it more than I expected to.

I'm about 16 hours in now and this game is excellent. It's 2018 GoW polished up in every aspect (Storytelling, graphics, combat, exploration, skills, gear, etc.) and it will be my game of the year no doubt. I could see myself going for the Platinum on this one which is something I've never done in a GoW game, but I will want to squeeze everything I can out of this game before I move on.
