Without seeing when the other player entered it is hard to even evaluate. We know he satisfies at least one criteria for a line change - he was out of play (crawling on the ice!). If the replacement player jumped on when he was within 5 feet of the bench then that's within the rules. The sub is on ice per Rule 74 and broken skate is off the ice for the purposes of Rule 70. If he wasn't within 5 feet well then that is where the language in Rule 74 kicks in that a penalty 'may be assessed'. It becomes a judgement call and as you say no advantage is being conferred. A perfectly reasonable non-call. It's the perfect combo of whining and not understanding the spirit/letter of the rules.

Kuemper out in COL, DeBrincat out in CHI. I'm OK with the Kuemper trade, as the Avs didn't win the Cup with great goaltending and this should raise the odds of getting some of the UFAs back next year. But DeBrincat cornfuzzles me. The Hawks have been rebuilding for awhile now, and now yet another young cornerstone is out so they can... continue to rebuild? That 7th pick tonight better be a doozy.

Gaudreau said the Blue Jackets were on his list before the free agency period opened, based on the experiences he’s had playing in Nationwide Arena and on conversations he’s had with current and former Blue Jackets, who raved about it.

“I’d never been to Columbus before until I made it to the NHL, so when I started playing there I didn’t know what I was walking into, and I was just … ‘Wow!'” Gaudreau told The Athletic by phone late Wednesday. “They’ve always had great crowds, really into the game. Maybe going back in time and not giving Erik Gudbranson $4M for 4 years would have been a good place to start.

Your Mortoning does make a good point. But apparently both players are opening to signing extensions in Calgary...if they do, then Treliving pulled off a real winner of a trade.

It's still a good trade even on expiring deals, at least in my opinion.

When I heard the names (and didn't realize the contract situations), I was floored at what Calgary got in return. If they can resign those players (neither is American, right?), then that's a huge coup for the Flames. I would be surprised if either players signs without having experienced at least a few months playing in Alberta first (considering how Calgary's summer has gone).

Yep, neither Huberdeau or Weegar are American.

I think it'll be easier to get Weegar signed than Huberdeau, but I bet if the Flames offered Huberdeau what they offered Gaudreau, it'd be hard to turn down.

Indeed! It's probably gonna be an anchor when the deal is done, but at least it's structured in a way they can buy him out without any real lingering issues.

Nathan McKinnon just signed an 8-year extension with the Colorado Avalanche, for $100.8 mil.

The $12.6M per year is pretty fantastic (Connor McDavid, the consensus #1 player in the league—but not the unanimous #1 player in the league, Austin Matthews in TOR and Nate McKinnon in COL both have their non-homer advocates—makes $12.5M per year). The numbers that I'd heard tossed around as folks speculated went as high as $16M per year (which is very close to the 20% team salcap cap per player contract). There aren't many out there for whom I'd say $12.6M yearly is a team-friendly deal (and this may not be by the end...) but this sure feels that way today.

Another great move by the Avs management team.
