Wasn't he already talking about bailing? I don't follow scandals closely because they all blur together, so I might be conflating him with some other scalawag, but I thought he'd already been frozen out of committee assignments and generally shunned. Congressman might be the worst job he's ever had.

IIRC, he was talking about not running for re-election and joining a FOX or OANN (until both said "Matt who?"). I don't think he was talking about resigning.

I also think he still has his committee assignments (because Kevin McCarthy is probably awaiting approval from Trump), although they might slide out from under him today.

In modern political America, that seems quite tame (the former, not the latter obviously). I could totally see this NOT meaning he's toast. Far from it. If he doubles down on it, owns it and claims it's the hypocrite liberals clutching their pearls again, he could be fine. Certainly any district that voted this complete douchebag into office is not our "best and brightest". All he might have to say is "if you don't re-elect me, the liberals win!!" or some such bs. "Liberal hit job - they want me gone because I caused them so much pain" Many people eat that line of thinking for breakfast every day.

The fact that The Crazy network is silent on him is by far the biggest threat (to him and his future career). Unless this gets darker, or more crime-y than it seems now, he gets a slap on the wrist at best from the traditional institutions.

There is zero chance of any scenario in which he "owns it". He will lie, lie and then lie again. The bulk of the GOP will (pretend to, at least) believe him. It's the acceptance of bald faced lies that I think is the Trump legacy.

Good point. Like Fox, they might just pretend it doesn't exist, or "they have not heard anything" like they did with the worst Trump comments.

The minimum rumor is that he's being investigated for sex trafficking: paying for an underage victim to travel with him for purposes of sex. There are also rumors that the investigation involves more than one victim. It was serious enough that Bill Barr (!) launched the investigation.

Plus it's becoming clearer and clearer that none of Gaetz's Republican colleagues (with the apparent exception of Gym Jordan and Marjorie Taylor Qreen) really like him.

I think Don Jr in particular, is stuck in the late 80's/early 90's with his 'do. His whole face/demeanor (and hairstyle) screams "I've always wanted to be a slick Wall Street trader jock, but this haircut is as close as I will get."

If you substituted Florida Man for Gaetz in this scenario, there would be a crap ton of right wing coverage, all of it mocking and downplaying how silly it was, locker room games, how petty the triggered liberals are being over nothing, etc. He would be so far from toast, he would be ... raw dough. More trouble incoming for Gaetz.

Federal investigators are looking into a Bahamas trip Matt Gaetz allegedly took in late 2018 or early 2019 as part of an inquiry into whether the Florida representative violated sex trafficking laws, multiple sources told CBS News.

Gaetz was on that trip with a marijuana entrepreneur and hand surgeon named Jason Pirozzolo, who allegedly paid for the travel expenses, accommodations, and female escorts, the sources said.

Investigators are trying to determine if the escorts were illegally trafficked across state or international lines for the purpose of sex with the congressman.

At least he was covered if the hand jobs became excessive.

He's toast because likely committed a crime of some sorts, which is why he is under investigation. His buddy just reached a plea deal with the Feds, and they wouldn't have given him that unless he gave them the goods.
