NBC announced this morning that they're getting into the streaming service game. The name of their service? Peacock.

What's one of the headliner shows? Yet another reboot of Battlestar Galactica, this time being run by Mr. Robot's Sam Esmail.

I gotta admit, I'm interested in that Battlestar Galactica reboot if it's being written by Esmail.

I wonder if they'll pull all their content off Hulu before going live with this?

But regardless...the most recent reboot was phenomenal, so I have almost zero interest in another reboot, even if it's well done. I would happily watch a new series centered in that universe (Caprica was actually really good - too bad that didn't get more than one season), but a new "colonies are attacked and refugees flee" story is a hard pass for me.

We have Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, and Starz.

Hulu is $1/month on a 12 month deal
Netflix is up to $16.99/month for 4 screens in 4k
Amazon Prime - free as we pay for the shipping and the streaming is just bonus
HBO - $15/month - will likely be dropping when we get Disney+
Starz - $5/month on special for 3 months - only got so my wife could watch Outlander. Will drop when price increases.

So we're at $37.99/month which is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper than cable. (Also have OTA TV, but really only use if for weather and sports.)

I'm not signing up for any more "major" broadcast network streaming services.

I signed up for CBS All Access just long enough to watch the Twilight Zone reboot, but their service is bullshit because they don't even offer all past episodes of The Big Bang Theory, just half of the last season. WTF?

I've gotten used to not watching broadcast television, so I'll stick with Netflix/Prime/Hulu. What little I do want to watch from the big 3 tends to wind up on one of those eventually anyway.

I am really curious to see how this all shakes out. I just can't fathom that there are enough NBC diehards (or ABC, or CBS) to warrant separate streaming platforms for each. At some point I feel like the bubble has to burst and we get to a point of re-consolidation.

I understand the initial appeal of putting some big reboot or series as an exclusive, but how long can you keep that up? And at what cost?

My biggest satisfaction in all this, however, is watching the cable companies struggle as more and more people cut the cord. I don't wish ill will on people who work for cable companies, as we all have to put food on the table. But Time Warner/Spectrum screwed me (and many other people) for YEARS. So I don't have a lot of sympathy for them.

I delight every time I get an offer from Spectrum practically begging me to sign back up for cable. Which is typically 1-2 times a week. Yes, grovel in the dirt you charlatans. Your tears are delicious.

My guess is that eventually they'll all be ad subsidized and then offered at a much lower cost. With some offering a "VIP tier" without advertising but at a considerably higher cost.

$44 and yes. I dont like streaming and I like random stuff and flipping around. Beside my cable supplies my internet. I get a discount for having tv. Without it streaming would be useless and much more expensive anyways.

Most folks end up saving money with just an internet connection and the a la carte approach. But to each their own.

I cut the cord about 5 years ago and haven't looked back since. I can't imagine not having what I want to watch available when I want to watch it.

So how would you count them? We drop them when the deal expires, but in the meantime, that is our monthly cost.

You can if you re-evaluate and add and drop services. You can't if your roadmap for expenses includes keeping them after they inflate in prices. That's something the next gen has right. Subscribe. Use. Drop. Move on. It's a mindset I've yet to learn.

I had an interesting conversation with a co-worker about this, as she was interested in cutting the cord. She basically couldn't understand the concept of learning to adapt to watching something different if the show you wanted to watch isn't available. Because you do. I used to watch Survivor religiously. RELIGIOUSLY. And one year, for whatever reason, I missed a season, and I DID NOT DIE.

Apparently her husband really liked some reality home improvement show, so I put it bluntly. Is that home improvement show worth what you're paying for cable a month? If it's not available for streaming, can you just purchase the season or individual episodes and still come out ahead?

There are people that can't make the leap over that hurdle. I know I held out MUCH longer than I should have in hindsight, but it does require a paradigm shift in the way you approach television. And that way you watch television, for most of us, is something that has been ingrained in us since childhood.

The funny thing is these days you can pay through the ass for full-blown cable and still not get the shows you want without ala carte add-ons. I just won't play that game -- while I don't have Netflix, I do have Amazon Prime and that comes with a bunch of shows I might wish to see. CBS? NBC? Not so much...I won't pay for just Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica.

Technically, we haven’t cut the cord, as Spectrum is piped into the MIL’s bedroom, but I’ve effectively done it. I eased into it, as I cancelled the DVR a few years prior. Not “having” to spend the weekend watching tv because the hard drive was full was a freeing experience.

No reason anybody has to subscribe to all the services at once. It's not like we are getting locked into 1 year contracts anywhere. I could see rotating a few of the services based on what I wanted to binge watch. Netflix one month for Stranger Things. Disney+ one month for marvel shows. Peacock one month for new BSG, etc. I realize that some of the new shows on various services will be airing weekly (like The Mandalorian), but once the season is done the full runs should be available. I doubt I'll be spending more than $20 on any given month regardless of how many streaming services launch.

That took me several years to learn when I first got TiVo. My series 2 could hold only 40 hours at highest quality and streaming wasn't a thing and adding a hard drive voided the warranty (and technically the lifelong sub) so TV watching actually became a source of stress. I now had this toy making it so I had to never watch live TV or commercials again but if I didn't watch enough TV things would go away. So I eventually decided if a show built up four episodes and I hadn't watched them yet, I wasn't enjoying them enough anyway. Once that seal was broken, I kinda quit caring about "my shows". And here I am 20 years later, I still have TiVo. I still have cable. Neither is important to me but I keep both, but having no energy to be active after work, having no other at home, my evenings would often feel empty without them. They are my company in the background.
