Gosh, you're old!

(wife and I are watching it and liking it!)
Julia Child is still beloved in Boston/Cambridge, and our lives overlapped with her a little bit. Wife interviewed her once, and we went to one of her favorite fancy restaurants (The Blue Room) shortly before it closed. So we feel a tenuous connection with Julia. Plus, food porn!
Also I do love me some WGBH! And I do love a good coq au vin!

Finished Our Flag Means Death last night. What a pleasure. The comedy missed sometimes and the pacing didn't always feel right, but the drama really hit the mark.

Major spoilers:
Spoiler:
Talk about subverting expectations. There were some early jokes and foreshadowing, but not once did I think this would earnestly evolve into an love story between two male pirates. (The principals.) It's the first time I can remember really rooting for a gay romance. Not because I'm opposed, but just because, as a straight person, I don't usually find them very accessible. Then of course there are the constant examinations of masculinity and toxic masculinity that might feel trite, but that are still evidently relevant. (Alt-right types must detest this show.) I do feel that, in the end, some of the minor characters didn't see enough development and their "jokes" became tired. (But ultimately there has to be some window dressing.) The show could also be a little too introspective at times.

Two unresolved plot points that have stuck in my mind: What happened to Blackbeard's ship/remaining crew? I'm sure I'm just forgetting. But it's weird, because the show treats ships as houses... everyone always seems to know where they are, and you can hop in a dinghy and visit at any time. (I don't have a problem with this conceit.) As well, how was it that Bonnet could just escape from his 10-year service agreement and return home? I know news didn't travel fast in those days, but if his initial intention was to return permanently, surely he'd be found out at some point.
[/spoilers]

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” is just fantastic. I was a big NBA fan during this time and remember it so well. I’m pretty sure they are taking a lot of dramatic license but it is both very entertaining and poignant at times. John C. Reilly is brilliant as owner Jerry Buss, while the young man playing Magic Johnson is really good too. Another thing I like is it gives credit for the “Showtime” Laker style of play to a relative unknown, Jack McKinney, who coached the Lakers for maybe a dozen games before a freak bicycle accident came close to killing him and knocked him out as coach. Just a great limited series.

HBO Max is now the 3rd largest streaming service in the US. (Ahead of Disney+ and Hulu.) Not bad for a service that didn't have Roku support when it launched. (Their Roku app still sucks, mainly from slowness.)

I have a soft spot for HBO as it was the first movie channel I ever got to see as a kid. My aunt and uncle next door had cable and Id go up in the summer and watch tv with my aunt. She'd let me watch one thing of my choosing while she took a nap too. its how I saw Excalibur and For Your Eyes Only and such.

Then my dad got and say Aliens and TONS of other amazing stuff. Still have that HBO intro in my head and feature attraction intro.

It would be interesting to see paying subscribers compared. A ton of people get HBO Max for free through AT&T. I don't think Disney+ is a thrown-in anywhere.

Disney+ bundles with some Verizon unlimited plans (and may with some other carriers too).

I don't know how long AT&T/HBOMax relationship will last given that Warner has officially spun off from AT&T (and combined with Discovery). It's not unreasonable to think that some kind of relationship will continue, but I don't know any details or plans.

Back then, most families fell into one of three categories: HBO families, Showtime families, and the rabbit ear peasantry. Most of the time I was #3, but the few times when we could afford premium cable, it was always Showtime. I used to love the Showtime Shorts, the short pieces they threw in between movies to line them up with the clock (they still hadn't gotten over starting shows only when the clock hands were vertical back then.) I remember Hardware Wars being my favorite short.

Of course, they had far fewer movies back then, so they'd show the same movies day after day. I must have seen Hawk the Slayer fifty times. It was largely responsible for getting me hooked on the fantasy genre.

TV Line
“While we are not proceeding with a third season of Raised by Wolves, we are beyond grateful to the stellar cast and crew,” HBO Max said in a statement, including “our creators Aaron Guzikowski, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and the entire team at Scott Free Productions, for their beautiful artistry and unique ability to immerse fans into the world of Kepler-22b.”

Series star Abubakar Salim, who played Father, first broke the news early Friday morning in an extensive Twitter thread that rallied fans to campaign for a Season 3, somewhere.

I enjoyed it though. And Jennifer Coolidge should just be given every single possible award for her performance. She was utterly fantastic from start to finish. I've always thought she was good, but damn if she didn't just own the role of the mentally scarred Tanya carrying her dead mother's ashes around Hawaii while working out her issues with all the abuse she'd suffered over the years. She just needs to win everything, that's all I'm saying.
I just finished S1 and had the same thought (I also started S2 which is off to a rip-roaring opening). But for S1, it reminded me a bit of a show like Lodge 49 or Dispatches from Elsewhere - very, very focused on character driven drama where there's some sort of connection but you're not exactly sure what it is or how it'll all come together. Still mad the Lodge 49 was given the ax but Dispatches from Elsewhere was so good as-is.

Anyway, I liked White Lotus but like you, I'm not really sure what to make of it overall. Maybe that's the point. Either way, it was an enjoyable ride.

Okay, your next show on HBO Max has to be Avenue 5. The first season was good, but season 2 is comedy friggin’ gold. If you’re not laughing out loud more than once an episode, I’ll watch a Mark Wahlberg movie.

All right, ep1 got a ferw chuckles out of me.

Can we space Kyle Bornheimer, though? I couldn't even stomach a full episode of Worst Week with him, and that's been 14 years.

He doesn’t bother me, but I never watched the show you mentioned. But if you don’t like him, he’s only seen a few time in at least the first half of season 2.

If you don’t like Zach Woods though, we’re gonna have to step outside.

Season 2 has been much funnier, in my opinion. And I thought season 1 was funny enough.

I finally began checking out a show that's been on my list for a while now, Veep. I like it, though as I expected, it's not nearly as good as the original show this is doing a sort of US adaptation of (The Thick of It/In The Loop), because there is noone like Malcom Tucker in it. If I had never seen the The Thick of It, it wouldn't be an issue as Veep is fun and funny in its own right. But, I *have* seen it, so it just feels like there is a big piece missing from this version.

There’s a throw away scene with Coolidge in the latest episode that made me laugh out loud. She hires a tarot card reader to come to her room, and at one point the reader holds the deck out for her to touch.…and Coolidge just slaps the deck hard. The confused look on the readers face was hilarious.

But your next show really has to be Avenue 5. I’m shilling for that one now. The latest season has incorporated an accidental dictatorship, light hearted cannibalism and cuddle clubs.

Update: season 2 episode 7 may be one of the funniest half hours of television I’ve seen in years.

And it only gets better once it starts to find its place. Took me a bit to adjust to its style, but boy does it hit when least expected. There's a scene with a certain big reveal regarding the ship that had me in stitches. It's the dry humor of them reacting to situations in a completely serious manner that makes it great. And Hugh Laurie is great in this.

P.S. the creator of Avenue 5 also made the insanely hilarious Death of Stalin. If you can find it, watch it.

Hrothgar wrote: Fri Dec 04, 2020 7:09 pm I finished watching The Vow about the NXIVM (Smallville, BSG) sex cult. It's amazingly well done. I think the best part was how well they handled the story arc. Initially, they show how the training helped people and created a community. They showed the attractive and charismatic people NXIVM used to draw people in. They showed how the business model encouraged constant recruitment and expansion. In other words they made it clear how seemingly ordinary people could get involved in this organization without alarm bells going off. Then they showed how select people were recruited to leadership positions that drew them closer and closer to the cult's leader Keith Raniere. Slowly, they show some red flags popping up here and there. Then the veil comes off and we see retaliation, punishment, control, branding, 'slavery', human trafficking and sex abuse. The arc follows a few prominent members from recruitment to promotion to disillusionment to escape to finally fighting against the cult. The series ends with the arrest of Raniere in Mexico. Watching everyone's reactions is surprisingly cathartic.

The most amazing thing is that one of the people we follow was the videographer for the cult. So he had tons of internal video showing the key players, the lifestyle and philosophy in action. There is also lots of audio recordings as members get paranoid after uncovering the darkness lurking beneath. Sure, there are a few too many people to keep track of with new people introduced each episode, but they really capture the feeling of betrayal as members uncovered the truth and realize the impact of their own actions on other people. Highly recommended. Of course, for adults only.

Apparently, there will be a part 2 that will show the trial and the aftermath debuting next year.
I finished watching part 2. It does cover the trial and sentencing. It goes into more detail on the Mexican raid where Raniere was captured. It shows a few of the key leaders under him realizing what they've done and confronting some of the truths they've tried hard to ignore. It includes disturbing details on the manipulation and sexual assault revealed during the trial. Ultimately part 2 focuses on two families that Raniere destroyed due to his need for control and his sexual perversions. They also spend a little time on a group of true believers that call the trial an injustice and lobby to get their leader released. They also follow a reporter covering the trial weighing its emotional toll. The additional perspectives round out the story. Still amazing how much audio, video and text evidence this guy kept around (for future historians) that was used in this documentary and against him at his trial.

Overall, very good. It could have benefitted from some tighter editing. Part 2 has even more graphic descriptions of sexual assault. Trigger warnings all round. The end asks a very poignant question about the nature of evil in the human heart. It's worth the long journey to get there even if there are no neat answers.

S2 ends this weekend! I'm actually enjoying this season more than S1. Still have no idea how this all ends (knowing sort of what happens in the first episode), but I have my guesses.
Spoiler:
It's pretty obvious now that Tanya is being set up for divorce and Albie is being set up by Lucia.

I'm feeling confident that Ethan kills Cameron in a jealous rage. I don't actually think Cameron did anything with Harper but Ethan seems like he's really fired up over the idea.

Not sure about the second body (from the first episode), but I'm guessing it's something with the Albie storyline. No idea how the Tanya story resolves either, but I'm guessing she comes out on top.
Either way, this really is a great show; it's very well written. Probably deserves it's own thread but I don't think anyone else is watching it!
