I'm all in favor of that, provided that their requirement for detection is either 100% or has a fast, built-in appeals process.

This game wasn't even on my radar, but I'm hearing huge praise. Will it have any legs or get boring after a few weeks?

I'm just hoping that their anti-cheat system doesn't have any false positives. Not much is worse than being accused of something you didn't do, then punished for it.

I think the game is amazing. I played as much as I could during the Open Beta, and I haven't had this much fun in a shooter since Team Fortress 2. I absolutely love the interplay between the classes -- switching up who you play as to try to counter the other team is just really fun. I love that there are so many characters and that there is so much to learn about the game. I love that I can do well as a healer or a tank even when I don't have the reflexes of a teenager. I love that there is so much style to the game, and I am very happy with the fact that you don't have to unlock any characters or weapons, you just get everything from the start.

I wouldn't say I've got withdrawal symptoms from not being able to play for the next week and a half, but I have been thinking about the game every day and I know exactly how many days it is until it comes out ...

I would guess on the surface -- 21 classes, 4 modes, 12 maps to start, etc., as long as you're into this genre (comparable to say Team Fortress 2), then you shouldn't technically be able to get bored quickly.

This Eurogamer Guide to Overwatch was useful, though they said they have more updating to go.

Overwatch guide
Hero, map and gameplay guides for Blizzard's new shooter.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016- ... atch+guide
=====================

Although I don't know anybody -- I'm as attention deficit disorder gaming as anyone else -- whose attention span for a game lasts more than a few weeks anymore. :)

imho partly that's volume, and partly it's most folks other than me playing PC, PS4, XBone and wanting to get their hands on anything and everything across all platforms. So that seems to reduce the chances you're ever going to stick with one game long enough to get hooked. And I suppose that's better for the industry, right?

If it was like the days I'd play nothing but Diablo for a year and half, or City of Heroes for 2 1/2 years, or Planetside for 6 months, I'm not buying other games during that time. Steam (and sometimes Origin for me) makes it so easy to buy that I just click Buy like a trained monkey.

Now I generally just take it on faith if somebody on Steam's telling me how great something is, and I gotta get it, what they usually mean is, "I dig this now, and maybe in 10-14 days I'll toss it aside to play something else." I guess I can't complain, it's just gaming evolution. But I don't much run into games I truly love enough to play for humongous lengths of time anymore.

Helldivers did hook me a good 4 months or so on PC, and I attribute that mainly to how fun the co-op was. So, I reckon if team vs. team is more one's style, than it certainly sounds like Overwatch would hook somebody for a relatively long period of time. Me, I got the FPS motion sickness blues, and with no Blizzard refund as a fallback, I just can't take the chance on this. :| I guess just a little bit sad for someone who used to jump on every single Blizzard release at retail back in the day.

So no comments since the release? Is anyone playing?

I've never played one of these, but I love Blizzard. Is it worth picking up or am I just going to spend all my time waiting to respawn?

That was my experience. Everybody seemed too squishy. Or I was just bad at the game. Or both. I sort of liked BattleBorn, close to a "meh" score, I liked Overwatch less than that. I felt that your character had a much longer longevity in BattleBorn, even on the PvP maps.

I'm really loving it so far. It's like a modern version of what I loved in the early days of Team Fortress 2, before the added kit customization stuff got put in and (IMO) detracted from what made TF2 so great.

I'm playing it fairly regularly.

It is a lot like Team Fortress 2 in regards to how it plays. The pyro, for instance, shines as defensive unit and can single handedly neutralize spies and stop well-planned enemy assaults with invulnerable units. If you take him out into the open hunting for snipers and heavies, though, you'll have a miserable time. Until you know the classes, you'll die quickly and often. When you do, though, you'll be able to walk into a situation, see which fights are meant for you, and decimate the enemies. A group of players who know their roles can dominate the field, as each meshes beautifully with the others.

In a time when multiplayer games are saturated with titles where you die on one burst (CoD, Battlefield) and winners are decided entirely by reflex, it is nice to have an active game where fights come down to strategy, and it really is about strategy. Each character has strategies that, if used against him, will let you defeat him without too much trouble. Each character has strategies that if employed properly will make you a juggernaut. You really do have to learn the right approach, though, and know how and when to use your special skills.

Also like TF2, the characters are instantly recognizable and have a lot of personality, which is a big plus.

Bastion (robot turret machine) can easily lay waste to the AI.. so you see a lot of Bastions kicking about because its an easy way to get a lot of kills and climb the XP ranks.. get fluff loot boxes

The AI does put up a good fight, but theres no organised counter to Bastion setting up shop and blitzing everything that gets in his sights. Unless all the other players die and he's the only one left. :)

Just posted in the Console forum, but I figured I'd chime in here, too. This is an unexpected find for me. I suck at FPS, but my kids wanted this, so I caved. Glad I did. It's been really fun so far, and I feel like I've just scratched the surface.

Very nice mix of characters, and each is really different. Good range, too - there are challenging characters to play (Genji) and great characters to get started with (Rheinhard). What's cool for someone like me who is not FPS/twitch inclined, you really feel like you are contributing to your team, regardless of whether you are racking up kill streaks. IMHO, Blizzard nailed this!

I've never played this type of game before, mainly because my tolerance for getting cussed at by racist 13-year-olds who spend 14 hours a day playing is pretty low. However, I've been hearing enough good things that I figured I'd give it a shot. Plus, this article (along with some of the feedback here) makes me think there might be some fun to be had even for those of us who generally suck at FPS games.

Played for a couple hours. That was...interesting.

Having never played a team-based shooter before, I have no idea what to think. It seemed ok I suppose, but I don't have the first clue what the hell I'm doing. Will probably need to go watch some video guides before it makes any sense.

Biggest thing is, know your role, whether it's offense, defense, tanking or support.

Also, some characters are much harder to play than others. Starting out with Soldier 76 (offense) or Rheinhart (tank) are really good options. I'm a team FPS noob, too, and I've really enjoyed playing those two and felt I was actually contributing to the team. I think Reaper is a good one to start on, too, but a lot has to do with play style.

In the end, though, I think what the game really has going for it is the diversity of characters. Today, I started playing as Bastion, and that was a blast! Don't be afraid to mix it up.

Edited to add, this guide at eurogamer is pretty helpful.

It's been a long time since I played this sort of FPS as well. I've found the biggest hurdle is simply becoming familiar with all the various maps as there are a lot of them.

Most of the time, if a map comes up that I don't know or are very familiar with, I play as Lucio. He's a pretty straightforward support/healer. You just want to stay with the group while your passive music heals everyone within range and line of sight. So I just stick with the others knowing that I'm helping them stay alive while I observe what's going on and become familiar with the map. There are other healers who heal faster but they're all single-target healers. Beyond that he's not that complicated to play...

- You also have music that makes your team run faster which is useful at the start of a match and when you and others respawn. Just make sure to switch back to your healing music when you get into the fray.

- You have a short cooldown that boosts the effectiveness of your music. So hit that when you need a healing boost.

- Your ultimate grants a powerful short term shield to those around you... makes a big difference.

- You're not going to do a ton of damage with your weapon, but up close it's a good burst of damage. It's also very accurate so if you see a sniper, turret or any slow/stationary target you have a good chance of plinking away at them from afar.

- Your alt-fire is a fairly short cooldown knockback which helps against some attackers, and most maps have ledges so you can knock people off to their death. Always good for a chuckle!

~Any character can be played in the training mode complete with passive targets and allies.

~The colors in the game change for each side - your team's stuff is always blue, your enemies stuff is always red.

~It also helps once you familiarize yourself with the basic game modes, as well. There are three main modes:

Escort - There is a payload, usually a vehicle of some sort. The attackers must escort the vehicle through the map to the other side within a set time limit. If they pass certain checkpoints along the way, they gain additional time. The trick is that the vehicle only moves if attackers are standing next to it, and the more attackers next to the payload, the faster it moves (maximum speed is achieved with three attackers.) If no attackers are near the payload, it starts to go backwards. The defenders try and make time run out before the attackers succeed by killing the attackers around the payload.

You can tell you're playing an Escort map if there is a line with dots across the top of the screen, representing the payload's progress.

Assault - there are several control points. The attackers must capture each in turn (A, which unlocks B, etc) within a time limit. The defenders must prevent them from doing so. In-game, the control points are colored room-sized areas on the ground. The more attackers physically within the square the faster they capture that point (there will be a capture meter across the screen, and a circle at the top has a white outline showing the same thing if you aren't nearby.) Defenders within the square will prevent the capture from progressing.

You can tell you're playing Assault if there are a series of circles across the top of the screen with some of them showing a lock icon at the beginning.

Control - Control is like Assault, but both teams are attackers and there is only one control point. Capture works just like Assault - if you have guys in the colored zone, you start to capture it, while the other team can block by having their guys in it. Whichever team controls it starts gaining 'points' at a set rate. Whichever team gets to 100% first wins. There are multiple rounds. Whichever teams wins two first takes the match.

You can tell you're playing Control if you have three circles at the top, one for each team on the sides with percentages and one in the center to show who controls the point.

I've tried all the classes, and am pretty much an abject failure across the board. Most of the time I can't even tell what the hell happened, I'm just staring at an "Eliminated by" screen before I can even blink...usually accompanied by a kill-cam of someone sniping me from across the map. When I play a damage class, I consider a game a success if I happen to get a single kill. Yeah, I'm that guy. I "get" how all the classes work...I just flat-out suck at them when playing against real people.

While I'm sure this is more forgiving that other games in the genre, I'm reasonably sure that I just don't have the twitch reflexes or patience to have even the smallest measure of success. I'm going to stick with it for a few days (told myself I have to give it at least 6 hours if I'm going to spend $40), but I'm not expecting much.

As a fellow old guy with shot reflexes, my advice is play Mercy. (but for the love of God, change her beam settings from 'hold' to 'toggle,' or your wrists will hate you!) There's no twitch reflexes required, you're useful in virtually every game mode and with 99% of comps, and very few people will complain about a healer, even a sub-par one.

I've played a few games with teams vs AI, but the only level I can seem to find a game for is Easy. Which seems laughably easy, even for me. Sat in queue for 10 minutes trying to get into a medium match last night and finally gave up. Will keep giving that a shot as a learning mode though.

Pick a character that matches your capabilities. Mercy may be good, as would Lucio, who only requires line-of-sight to his allies and doesn't necessarily have to fire at all. Pharah and Junkrat would be good for offensive characters, as both have area-of-effect weapons. Pharah uses a rocket launcher that you'll generally want to hit near your enemies rather than targeting them directly, so shooting the ground or walls is perfectly normal. Junkrat has a grenade launcher that can be used to bounce grenades off of walls and around corners like an explosive billiards match.

In any case, dying repeatedly is perfectly normal. We all do it.

Pick one or two, take them into training and blow up bots until you have their abilities down to a science, then use those two. After a few matches, go watch some guides for that character. It is good to know what they all do, but only try to master one or two at a time. Once you feel competent with a couple, then start expanding your horizons.

And most of all, have fun. Don't worry about underperforming. That will catch up quickly on its own.

You might also try out Symmetra or Roadhog. Roadhog is just a big, fat pile of hitpoints, and he can heal himself. His main job is to kind of hang around the edges, using his hook to yank people out of position and unload his huge shotgun into their faces. See someone small? Hook and shoot. Running low on health? Run around the corner and hit E to heal yourself up. Got your uber up? Charge in and fire indiscriminately!

Symmetra is another one tailor made for people like me with bad aim. She's really only for maps where you're on defense. She has two jobs. First is to make sure all your teammates have shields on, and the game will nicely tell you to hit E if you aim at a teammate with no shields. Do that, and everyone will like you. Second is to decorate the objective area with turrets like it's goddamn Christmas. You get to have six of these things up at any time, so you should ALWAYS have six up. They only have 1 hp each, so try and hide them a bit, but they're small, so they tend to get ignored. You can also stick them in hallways the enemy might go through, and they'll notify you if they're firing or destroyed, so they can be like little alarms, but mostly you just want them up and firing. If there's a dude nearby, your gun will lock on, so you don't even have to really aim! And, when your turrets have done enough damage, you'll get to put up a teleporter for your team, which makes you everyone's favorite person.
I can't imagine, even at my most inebriated, hearing a bouncer offering me an hour with a stripper for only $1,400 and thinking That sounds like a reasonable idea.-Two Sheds

Fun moment of the night: Playing Pharah, fighting an enemy Pharah. I land a rocket or two near her and she's hurt pretty bad, so she hits her jet pack and flies away. I hit mine, swoop in right behind her and melee her out of the air. She had to love that kill cam!

Had one round on the new map today, Eichenwalde. It's gorgeous, and a departure from everything else. Anachronistic but beautiful. It's a capture and escort map, like Kings Row.

Downloaded this last night and am loving it so far, even though I've only played against AI. I was playing D.Va and liked her. Was surprised I was racking up so many kills with a tank and thinking I was just a badass when I realized that all the people on the other team were bots. I've noticed that when I'm in a queue for an AI game it will throw me into a skirmish match until the game opens up. Am I playing against bots or people in that skirmish?

Edit - after playing again in skirmish mode it was easy to see that they are bots.

The new Halloween brawl just came out today. You play on a team of four with characters limited to McCree, Ana, Hanzo and Soldier 76 and only one of each character per team. You are guarding the castle door from a steady stream of zombies. Every once in awhile a boss appears and they have a ton of hitpoints. I only played it twice (on Medium no less) and we didn't finish it. Really fun though.

I'm very impressed with the polish on this brawl. They have a bunch of new skins in the lootbox with a halloween theme. Some of them are really cool.

Yeah, I turned into a Blizzard fanboi at some point, so I end up playing this whenever I'm not playing Heroes of the Storm.

It's the only game I play right now. Mostly I play Mei, but I try to be competent enough with at least one character in each class. My order of preference would be:

Mei
D.Va
Junkrat
Lucio
Zenyata
Reinhardt
Roadhog

If I have to play Assault I'll play either Reaper, Soldier 76 or Tracer. For the most part I do not like playing assault at all.

It's a lot like TF2. There are no capture the flag maps though. The maps are all either control points or payload escort.

The characters are broken into four classes: Assault, Tank, Defense and Support. There are at least 5 characters per class and they are all wildly different. For example, one support healer has a large healing radius that is always on (unless he switches to speed and in that case all teammates in that radius get a speed boast while active. Another healer can place a healing orb on one teammate and one discord orb on one enemy. Another healer is like the classic TF2 healer where they are connected to one teammate and do major healing to that person.

That's what I love about the game. There's so much variety between characters.
