This is a great video with details on an attack by Wagner Group Russian mercs on a US held oil base in Syria. The mercs thought it was Syrian Democratic forces they were attacking lol. They found out fast it wasn't. The entire video just makes me smile.

Nothing about that made me smile. Hundreds dead, and the kind of situation that can lead to open war.

Fuck Wagner and Fuck Putin, absolutely.

This makes me think about all of the war footage from Ukraine available online. I cringe at the ones turned into music videos, but I also know that every Russian armored vehicle I see being blasted is a victory for the good guys.

How would things have been different if everyone had been able to watch combat footage during WW2? In that scenario, I'd hope that it wouldn't alter the outcome.

On the other hand, there's a reason Allied governments censored images of (e.g.) US Marines polishing Japanese skulls and mounting them on their vehicles.
Much prefer my Nazis Nuremberged.

Newsreel? Definitely a thing. Edited, sure, but so are what we see coming out of the current war (moreso probably).

Fuck Wagner, absolutely. But the fact that we have people like Wagner to begin with, and are killing them by the hundreds in a battle for oil (which we could have eliminated much of the need for to begin with) just shines an unpleasant light on us (collectively.) I'm not crying over Wagner deaths, but the fact that the situation exists in the first place, motivated almost entirely by a handful of peoples' profits, is disgusting.

Also, if I wish death on someone here on the forum - say, a politician - I'd be mobbed with people telling me that, no matter how bad they are, wishing them to die isn't OK. But those 200 guys? Yeah, that's different. Is the world better without them. Yep. But cheering their deaths doesn't feel all that great.

So, no, I'm not smiling over the video.

Yikes. If you don't know why this is interesting, France is burning right now as people riot over Macron's government forcing through an increase in the minimum retirement age without a vote in their legislative body. He went on tv to give an interview and must have realized at some point he was wearing a 5-figure watch (80K Euros? Edit: Macron's people claim it's not worth that much) and took it off *mid-interview*. He claims he kept hitting it on the table and you can hear that happen just prior to him removing it but...

He is really pushing something stupid over there thats for sure. He best hope they dont take him to the guillotine. Which in France they might over this.

Opinion: ‘Work’ means something different in France than in the US
For the past three months, a spasm of demonstrations has gripped France over moves by the government to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. In recent days, French indignation led to a no-confidence vote that President Emmanuel Macron only narrowly survived. A new round of mass protests called by organized labor took place on Thursday — the ninth day of strikes since the bill was introduced in January.

Schools are closed because teachers are on strike. Transportation, including France’s usually reliable train service, is suddenly erratic because of the work stoppages. On top of all this, Parisians have seen their city’s streets strewn with tons of trash, after sanitation workers launched a labor action in solidarity

He either raises the retirement age or the government runs out of money for pensions. France has a very generous retirement plan. Much better than most countries. The protestors may have a point with Macron seemingly doing an end run around parliament for this, but the change isn’t stupid. It’s pretty much necessary.

Agreed. Living in a country where the age is 67, it's hard to sympathize with the French anger over 64. Their life expectancy is 83.0 (2022), versus 76.4 (2021) here. I do understand their indignation over the undemocratic way Macron rammed it through. But a Frenchman retiring at 62 can expect to draw a generous pension for 21 years, whereas an American retiring at 67 will enjoy lower benefits for just 9.4 years.

(My specific life expectancy numbers are from the first result of a super-quick googling and are probably disputable, but I'm confident that the French can expect to live longer and better than Americans do.)

True though some argue there are alternative things they could do (soak the rich for example). However, one thing to think about is this is also a big change that happened to be a big straw that broke the camel's back. He has used this power to end run the lower chamber to push through something like 10 or 11 laws in the last year that he couldn't get passed by a vote. A lot of the folks are mad about the pensions and the idea that Macron is acting like an out of touch dictator. It's a bit more complex than just a freakout about the pension plan or how generous it might be.

The fear he helped drum up over the Obama and Biden presidencies spurred record gun sales.
