As to name origins, it's generally believed that gaffer's tape is so called because it's what is used on stage and film sets by the gaffer (the head electrician) to tape down cables.

Duck cloth + adhesive = duck tape.
WWII took it a bit further as slang (it was a waterproofing tape - like water off a duck's back.)

To be fair, it's unclear when the actual term 'duck tape' was applied to it, but it absolutely predated 'duct tape' (which makes sense, given that it wasn't for ducts - it was for waterproofing ammo crates.) Slang, especially military slang, can be hard to pin down. Etymologists still aren't sure where the word 'jeep' even came from, even though it originated at the same time (popular theory: the model of military 'jeep' that got the most use was the Ford General Purpose, aka the GP.)

Further complications include a Popeye character named Eugene the Jeep that first appeared in 1936, long before the Willy's corporation won the Army contract for the vehicles that came to be known as Jeeps.
