Rulez:

The System is in crisis!!

Kevin Flynn has become trapped in the System by the Master Control Program (MCP) and is fighting to escape back to the real world. The MCP knows that derezzing Flynn here in the System and preventing him from escaping to the real world is the key to his plan for world domination. However, both Flynn's and the MCP's plans could be spoiled by Thorne and his corruption.

Game Term Glossary:

Code: Select all

Program := ALL players are called Programs
Downtime      :=    the WW equivalent of the night phase;
Uptime        :=    the WW equivalent of the day phase;
Derezzed      :=    death to a Program via a Derezz Utility or natural ability;
Terminate     :=    death to a Program via the daily Lynch;
Corrupted     :=    a condition a Program might be in (unknowingly);
                    Corrupted Programs count toward the Corrupted Victory Condition;
Infected := the act of Corrupting a program with a Virus.
                    (see Corrupted)
The Grid := The Grid is broken up into 8 by 8 disc sectors for a total of 64 sectors
                    Each sector may or may not contain "Code" that can be used by Programs:
                                    {'utilities','system rights','permission bits'}
                    Each sector can contain more than one code item or may contain none;
User-Program  :=    1 specific Game Role is deemed "User-Programs";
Header Info   :=    the player's team status and any code they possess;
Code          :=    the items that may be found in a given Sector. only two code can be run per downtime;
Ping := Ping has a limit of 125 characters. use http://www.lettercount.com/ to verify.

Teams

The Users

Kevin Flynn:
Image
Kevin Flynn was a brilliant computer programmer who has created some best-selling video games for the company ENCOM, including Space Paranoids, Matrix Blaster, Vice Squad and Lightcycles. Flynn greatest achievement was creating a the "System". However, Flynn has become trapped in the System by the Master Control Program and is fighting to escape back to the real world.

Code: Select all

User    : Flynn is a User-Progam and cannot be easily derezzed or terminated;
          As a User-Program, Flynn is totally immune from the Uptime Termination
          As a User-Program, Flynn cannot be derezzed unless the program has Admin Rights;

Back-up : Flynn has a single native Back-up ability;
          Flynn can not back up himself with his natural Back-up ability;
          This is a one time use Back-up;

Ping : Flynn may secretly send a message to either the MPC or Thorne each downtime.
          Flynn will not be informed who the MPC or Thorne. The MPC and Thorne will be not informed who Flynn is.
          The Ping must be under 125 characters.

Catalog : Flynn will receive a report at the beginning of each uptime with the number of programs on his team.
TRON:
Image
Tron is a security computer program written by Alan Bradley. His legendary skills and devotion to the Users turned him into a mighty video game warrior and Disk Arena master.

Code: Select all

Deadly Disc of TRON : TRON can use his Disk to immediately derezz any program during Uptime;
                      This is a one time ability.
                      While TRON has the Deadly Disc of TRON he is immune to 3 "Corruptions";
                      After the three Corruption attempt the Deadly Disc of TRON is destroyed;
                      The fourth Corruption attempt will infect TRON;

Quorra:
Image
Quorra is the last surviving ISO. Isomorphic Algorithms (better known as ISOs) are a race of programs that spontaneously evolved on the Grid, as opposed to being created by users. Their existence is considered a miracle by Kevin Flynn, however the MPC considers them to be an obstruction and has hunted them to the brink of extinction. ISOs have a natural affinity to the Grid and are able to remove corruption. Flynn has kept Quorra's existence a secret in order to protect her and what will happen to the Grid if she is derezzed.

Code: Select all

Last ISO        : If Quorra is derezzed or terminated part of the Grid will derezzed with her. One quarter of all programs will randomly be derezzed instantly. Only Flynn as a User-Program is immune. ;

Anti-Virus : Quorra is able to use her natural "Anti-Virus" ability each Downtime.

ENCOM

Master Control Program (MCP):
Image
The Master Control Program was a rogue computer program created by Ed Dillinger that ruled over the world inside ENCOM's mainframe computer. During the rule of the MCP, many programs were enslaved and pitted against the program's henchmen, led by Sark. Since being defect by TRON in 1982, the MCP has been trying to destroy Flynn and take back control of the system.

Code: Select all

Faster Processing : The MCP can search three sectors per Downtime.

Ping : MPC may secretly send a message to either the Flynn or Thorne each downtime.
          MPC will not be informed who the Flynn or Thorne is. Flynn and Thorne will be not informed who the MPC is.
          The Ping must be under 125 characters.

Catalog : The MPC will receive a report at the beginning of each uptime with the number of programs on his team.
Sark:
Image
Sark is the MCP's main henchmen and enforcer. After being derezzed by TRON in 1982, the MCP was able to recreate Sark from an old backup however Sark is not the program he once was. However, due to Sark's extensive experience running the game grid Sark will avoid TRON's Deadly Disc

Code: Select all

Game Grid Experience            : Sark is immune to TRON's Deadly Disc ability;
                                  This will use up TRON's Deadly Disc ability;

Brutal and Needlessly Sadistic  : Sark is able to derezz a single program per uptime;
                                  Due to Sark's reduced capacity, this ability costs 1 Permission Bit;
                                  Sark has one FREE derezz (without using a Permission Bit);

Automatic Transfer              : If the MCP is derezzed, Sark inherits his "Faster Processing";

Corrupted

Thorne:
Image
J.D. Thorne is a security chief at ENCOM gone missing during the events of Tron 2.0. Somehow Thorne was able to enter the system but the conversion left him insane and corrupted. Consequently, Thorne is trying to corrupt the system and take control however Thorne's corruption will cause the system to crash destroying everything including Thorne himself.

Code: Select all

Corrupt : Each Downtime, Thorne can Corrupt a Program by "infecting" it.

Ping : Thorne may secretly send a message to either the MPC or Flynn each downtime.
          Thorne will not be informed who the MPC or Flynn is. The MPC and Flynn will be not informed who Thorne is.
          The Ping must be under 125 characters.

Infection : Thorne will show as "clean" when scanned by a virus scan code.
          If 75% or more of functioning programs are infected, then Thorne will show as "infected" when scanned by a virus scan code.

Daft Punk: Guy-Manuel and Thomas:
Image
Daft Punk is an electronic music duo consisting of French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (born February 8, 1974) and Thomas Bangalter (born January 3, 1975). Daft Punk reached significant popularity in the late 1990s house movement in France and were met with continued success in the years following. Somehow, Daft Punk have made it into the system and there presence has caused further corruption which Thorpe has used to his advantage.

Code: Select all

Corruption Carriers : If Corrupted, Guy-Manuel or Thomas gain the "Corrupt" Downtime ability;
                      Guy-Manuel and Thomas can not infect one another;
                      If "Cleaned", they will lose their "Corrupt" ability;
                      Guy and Thomas are "Infected" and "Cleaned" as individuals;

Direct Line : Both Guy-Manuel and Thomas have a secret forum they may use at any time.
Programs - Neutral
Image
All unnamed programs begin the game in a neutral state. They are not part of any team and will not win with any team victory unless they choose a side. If a victory condition is reached and a program is in a neutral state they will not be considered part of the winning team.

Programs can choose a team to join by performing the Login command. Program's may choose to switch teams. Login is an innate ability that all unnamed programs naturally have and cannot lose.

login (team_name)

Code: Select all

Login  (*)  :=  {1 execution};
                      {USE = Downtime, cannot be used on back to back downtimes};
                      {Program joins a team.};
Programs that join a team receive a either benefit and limitation. Named programs may NOT use LOGIN.

Users:
Benefit - None.
Limitation - None.

ENCOM:
Benefit - May search one extra sector per downtime.
Limitation - All backup's (even backup taken in the past) fail.

Corrupted:
Benefit - None.
Limitation - May not use Sector Map, Improved Processing, or System Restore.

Named programs may NOT use login.

Victory Conditions:

Users Victory:
User team members must possess Permission Bits equal to the number of uninfected programs PLUS twice the number of infected programs active on the system at the beginning of Uptime thus allowing Flynn to defeat the firewall and escape the System. All Permission Bits held by Users players are added together for this check. (For example, if there are 5 Clean programs and 3 Infected programs currently active on the system, the Users must have (5 + (2x3)) = 11 Permission Bits at the beginning of Uptime to win.) The User's victory conditions can not be met until Uptime 2.

ENCOM Victory:
ENCOM derezz Flynn and all infected Programs to take control of the System.

Corrupted Victory:
At the start of Uptime, every active Program must be infected.

Private Messaging / Forum Posts:
Text sent to players by the Moderator may not be copied and/or shared with other players at any time.

Gentleman's Rule of No Edits (i.e. Edit at your own peril, it's your fellow players you need to satisfy)
Edits to "Game Vote Tally" posts are allowed, as long as the posts contain no 'commentary'.

Game Sequencing:

The game will start with Downtime 0.

Downtime Boilerplate:
All orders must be in before the hard deadline, or forfeit;
Downtime deadlines are normally 24 hours unless this occurs on a weekend where more time may be granted;

All Programs: Select a sector (1 thru 64) to search. (Search Sector ??)
All Programs: Do you wish to run code? (only two code can be run per downtime)
All Programs: Do you wish to login to a team?
Flynn: Will you use your back up and if so on who?
Quorra: Who will you use your anti-virus program on?
Thorpe: Who will you infect?
Daft Punk - Guy-Manuel: If already corrupted, who will you infect?
Daft Punk - Thomas: If already corrupted, who will you infect?

Downtime Sequence of Resolution:
Process All Programs orders (in the following order)
  • login
  • system_scan
  • back_up
  • ping

Process Flynn order (backup)
Process Thorpe order (infect)
Process Daft Punk - Guy-Manuel order (infect if possible)
Process Daft Punk - Thomas order (infect if possible)
Process Quorra order (anti-virus)
Process All Programs orders (in the following order)
  • virus_scan
  • anti_virus
  • System Restore

Process All Program's sector search

Beginning of Uptime Sequence:
Check Victory Conditions
PM catalog list of team numbers to Flynn and MPC
PM results of sector search to each program.
PM the number of permission bits in the buffer for each program (if zero no PM will be sent)
Announce if any Programs were derezzed.
Announce current active Programs and majority votes needed to terminate.

Beginning of Uptime Boilerplate:
Sark, do you wish to derezz a program?

Voting:
Each Uptime, Programs will be able to place a vote for the Program they wish to be Terminated.

Only votes (and withdraws) cast with the   tag are official.

A majority vote will close voting.
If the Uptime ends without a majority reached no program will be derezzed.
Deadlines will normally be 5 to 7 days depending on weekends or holidays.

End of Uptime Boilerplate:
Voting is closed once majority is reached.
Results are announced. Permission bits are distributed to programs on that vote.

Deaths:
The specific Header Information of the terminated Program will not be revealed in the notification announcement. If a program is derezzed by majority vote, the permission bits held by that program's will be randomly distributed (using random.org) to the programs that voted for that program.

Role Playing
Players are encouraged to role play.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Does the program performing an Anti-virus on another program receive a successfully cleaned response? No. When a program puts in an order to use anti-virus on another program there will be no response. The anti-virus code can not be blocked. If that program was infected then they will be cleaned. If they were not infected then nothing happens. Keep in mind that a program will not know if they are infected or clean.

What happens if someone tries to use anti-virus on Thorne? Thorne is always considered infected and an anti-virus will not clean him or affect him in anyway. Thorne will show up as infected when virus scanned.

How do back-up's work? If an program is backed up and then later infected and then derezzed and saved by his back up is he no longer infected? Back-ups do not freeze at the time the program is backed up. Once a program is back up, updates are made to the backup continuously until it is used or deleted. Therefore, if a backed up program is derezzed, then he is immediately recreated just as he was at the moment of derezzed. Just think of a back up as a protection. You can not use a back up code on a program that has previously been derezzed.

Who can scan a sector? All programs (named and unnamed) have the automatic ability to scan one sector per night.

Thanks Semaj. I missed that stuff when I copied and pasted the rulez from my last game. I always think role playing can be fun.

So you in?

IN. Should be over the burnout by then. Heck, the GT crowd doesn't trust me anymore after being evil in two games - winning one and almost winning the other. (although it was the infected guy carrying on at the end).

Hmmm. A good point. I think she's going to take TRON Guy's role with a wit bit of rulez adjustment. Thanks, Remus.

Work is real busy but I plan on NOT working sometime this afternoon and getting a good draft out there with what Unagi and I have discussed up to this point. Its pretty neat stuff but I'm worried about the numbers so I think to filter through that soon.

MORE INFO after 2:00 pm...

I wasn't gonna play another forum game for a while, but I'm a sucker for complexity. In!

And since I am an idiot, is this a good summary?

System Scan - Qty 10 - Scan player & learn role
Backup - Qty 15 - Rez self
Ping - Qty 10 - 125 character 1 way chat
Derez - Qty 5 - Day kill
Virus Scan - Qty 15 - Nighttime scan for infection
Antivirus - Qty 15 - Daytime clean

Admin rights - Qty 3 - What does this do? Can yo not use Derez without this??
Sector Map - Qty 1 - See complete map - What is seen? What is in each sector? Who is in each sector?
Improved Processing - Qty 1 - Can scan 3 sectors per night rather than 1.

Permission Bits - Qty 32 - Need to collect for Users to Win.

Teams

Users
  • Flynn - Hard to Kill/Corrupt and has free nightly ping to MCP/Thorne
  • TRON - Shooter - one daytime shot
  • Quorra - Cleaner - take out 1/4 programs if killed
Encom
  • MCP - Can search 3 sectors per night and has free nightly ping to Flynn/Thorne
  • Sark - Can Derez 1/day with Permission bit after free use. Gets MCP power if MCP gone
Corruption
  • Thorne - Corrupts and free nightly ping to Flynn/MCP
  • Daft Punk Duo - Two players who get Corruption ability if Corrupted. Can not Corrupt each other
Programs
  • Everyone else - may join a team at will and switch as long as one night has passed since joining

Questions
  1. Do people move around the board?
  2. If no, what happens when people scan a sector?
  3. What if more than one person scans the same sector?
  4. What happens to a players inventory when they Derez?
  5. It is mentioned that there is a neutral victory condition, but I don't see it listed. (Could be I'm just blind.) :)
I think I love that people can pick teams! :wub:

I think I really like this as well.
Deaths:
The specific Header Information of the terminated Program will not be revealed in the notification announcement. If a program is derezzed by majority vote, the permission bits held by that program's will be randomly distributed to the programs that voted for that program.
And to think you and Unagi are always at each others throats. Look what happens when yo cooperate! :lol:

:P

stessier wrote: Admin rights - Qty 3 - What does this do? Can yo not use Derez without this?? A program must have Admin Rights in order to derezz a user (Flynn). Otherwise the derezz will fail.
Sector Map - Qty 1 - See complete map - What is seen? What is in each sector? Who is in each sector? The program that finds the Sector Map will receive a list of all 64 Sectors on the Grid and the Sector Code currently located in those sectors. This is a very powerful piece of information. Think of Sectors as storage bins.
stessier wrote: Questions
  1. Do people move around the board? There is no board. Just sectors to scan each downtime where you may find code.
  2. If no, what happens when people scan a sector? When a program scans a sector they may find code.
  3. What if more than one person scans the same sector? Missed this so I Updated! Random.org will decide who gets the code at that sector.
  4. What happens to a players inventory when they Derez? If a program is derezzed, all their sector code and permission bits are lost. If a program is terminated (via lynch) then all programs that are part of the vote receive that program's permissions bits equally given out. If that is not possible random.org will decide who received the permission bits. All sector code is lost.
  5. It is mentioned that there is a neutral victory condition, but I don't see it listed. (Could be I'm just blind.) :) There is no possible neutral victory condition. Can you refer me to the place where you see that referenced?

It can really make this game the wild west. I'm really worried about balancing issues since I have no idea how the game will play out but thats what makes it exciting, huh? :D

BTW, this is a very good overview but I added one more Sector code:
system restore()

Code: Select all

System Restore (1) :=  {1 execution};
                             {USE = downtime};
                             {The System is reset to the previous uptime.};
                             {All events and actions during the current update and downtime are lost.};

I agree. Unagi is great at writing rulez. We spent about two days tossing ideas at each other and he also did the amazing favor of formatting and cleaning up my rulez. I think they look great thanks to him. I hope he signs up for the game he created!! :P
