I'm a big fan of Red Meat. Looks like they still have their archive online too.

Kate Beaton of Hark! A Vagrant fame has a new graphic novel out, Ducks. A memoir of her time working in the Alberta oil sands, in many ways it's unlike anything she's ever done - serious, often sad, with greater attention to clarity and composition. It is somehow expansive and intimate all at once, and it's exceptional. I really recommend it.

She has been getting a lot of good media attention lately, and she definitely deserves it.

I still go back through the Hark! A Vagrant archive from time to time. Such great stuff!

I somehow missed hearing about this until now.

What is the deal with people leaving negative reviews of a graphic novel because it is full of pictures ("like a comic book") instead of just words ("like a novel"). Is this a meme of which I've been blissfully unaware, or are they just stupid?

Just stupid, I'd guess. Although you have to be really, really stupid to not realize ahead of time that it's a comic. Do these people just buy books blind without learning anything about them beforehand?
