Correct. It was on TV the other night, and I caught the end.

I should have known you'd get it. :D

And I didn't even have to post:

It's been a while so I should probably watch it again sometime soon.

Heck, I even watched the mostly terrible sequels

Won't have a chance to post something until I get home.

I didn't even know there was a Death Race 2 until I was looking at the page for this one.

Dude, there's like three (kinda four) sequels.
Each of them gets progressively worse, as you'd expect.

Is that the one set in the small town in Alaska? I remember wanting to watch it, but never did.

It's close for me. But "Let the Right One In" overtook it. Have you ever watched a small, indie Vampire film called "Blood and Donuts"? It's a silly little film, but man I love that one.

You're thinking of 30 Days of Night. Another one I actually like quite a bit. But mostly because it attempted to return vampires to the realm of horror instead of romance. I read one interview with the maker of the film who described his portrayal as trying to make them look like "sharks on land" (no, not the SNL version of Land Shark).

Edit: brian beat me to it.

I'll get a screenshot up in a little bit. gotta run some work errands first.

I watched the trailer. That was completely new. Pretty sure I had no knowledge of this film. However, "Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen" has me intrigued. :D

Also Jeanette Goldstein.
Near Dark was filmed directly after Aliens so they still had that camaraderie going.

Near Dark is required viewing for anyone who even remotely likes horror films or even just good filmmaking. I mean, it's Kathryn Bigelow, who went on to win academy awards for Hurt Locker.

It also has Jenny Wright...who was my main crush for many years.

How about for people that don't like horror movies? At all. But I usually do fine with vampire movies.

That was my issue with vampire films for many years. They're monsters, for christ's sake. Anne Rice ruined them for decades.

But if you don't like horror films, you may appreciate Near Dark for the western it is also.

Last off-topic comment. :D

I agree 100% with Let The Right One In. Fantastic movie. Talking about the original, of course.

Also, I apparently can't use the "film buff" moniker. Since I have no idea on your image. I don't do well with most films before the late 70s.

I was conflating 28 Days Later with 30 Days of Night so bungled the actual title.

I will definitely check out Blood and Donuts.

Also a road trip movie with comedic (but violent) underpinnings.

I'd argue she didn't ruin vampires directly (at least not initially). Her early vampire books made vampires more interesting - they were still monsters, but they were also still human. Some vampires embraced their monstrous sides, while others became so horrified by it that could barely live with themselves. Sure, there was a fair amount of melodrama, but I read the books when I was a teenager so melodrama wasn't necessarily bad. Her later stuff lost its way, and plenty of other vampire books and movies followed that helped to ruin vampires, but I'll defend her first two (maybe three) books. (I also liked Tale of the Body Thief, but that took things in a different, more interesting direction.)

And I still think Pitt should have been Lestat and Cruise should have been Louis.

Fun fact about Near Dark is that the word "vampire" is never used!

I can agree with that. However, she did inspire a lot of awful writers to create a legion of vampire Heathcliffs lamenting their long lives like emo wussies.

That being said, Let the Right One In goes with the sad vamp motif too, but in a decidedly more interesting way that creates pathos in a way I wasn't expecting.

Since we are also talking about Bill Paxton, let me throw in my obligatory recommendation for Frailty.

A few years ago I was asked to write a series of horror reviews for quartertothree during a halloween build up month. Frailty was one of them. I do love that movie. It has its flaws, but it had some great twists. Also, Paxton was an underrated actor in my opinion.
