Cheapo laptop

Post by Kraken »

I have been tasked with recommending a cheap laptop for my brother-in-law, who will use it only for web access. The wildest thing he's likely to ever do with it is word processing. Speed, battery life and weight don't matter much; durability is important, and his big hands need a sturdy, full-sized keyboard. His budget is around $500. I haven't begun to shop yet (waiting for post-holiday), but thought I'd start here.

If he can go a bit higher than the Dell Inspiron notebooks start at $700. Otherwise, I would look into used ones. I see older notebooks (Pentium III, 1 Ghz range, 128 or 256 RAM with 10 or 20 gig hard drives) advertised in that range on used forums.

If you look around, you can get those inspiron's for about $599. Check out Techbargains.com and watch the site. Best Buy has also had a pretty nice Toshiba for that price after rebates.

Otherwise, it's strictly used machines in that range.
