I've been a casual fan since the appeared, but yeah it really is. I actually came to appreciate American Idiot even more after Green Day: Rock Band (oddly enough). Remember Rock Band?

The game that took over my life for years? Yes...yes I do. I fondly remember awaiting each week's DLC reveal in the hopes that it was something awesome.

Group jams with OO/GT'ers are still some of my favorite gaming memories. I was pretty good, but Fretmute was simply GODLIKE.

One of my favourite metal bands Xoth is releasing their new album tomorrow, Exogalactic. They play a kind of cosmic-themed thrashy, melodic technical death metal.

Edit: That's probably going to be overshadowed by the above release.

I thought that the most brutal album of 2024 would be a toss up between Bloodgutter or Rotpit, but NecroticGoreBeast’s “Repugnant” album came out of left field last week with the aural equivalent of a sledgehammer to the face.

This is just nutso, in all the death metal ways I like.

So what is everyone's thoughts on this? A friend of mine who has been in a Beatles cover band for decades (American English for those who might recognize the name) gave it a thumbs down but didn't explain why. I rather like it, the production values make it sound very current. But it's not as progressive as a lot of the later Beatles stuff, so it doesn't seem to fit their timeline.

Honestly I don't get a lot of the criticism about it. "It sounds too modern." Well yeah, that's because it is. Paul and Ringo aren't going to make it sound like shit so people can pretend it's from the past. It's not a Beatles song from the 60s, it's a Beatles song from 2023. My only slight criticism is that it's a bit of a downer song to end everything on, but they were working with what they had. I quite like it.

Melanas
Self described as, "jangle pop and garage rock with synthesizers".
I'm not sure about that, but the whole album is good.

Small Paul

A group formed during the pandemic shutdowns in the Pacific Northwest.
Their first album covers a few adjacent genres, (alt) Country, Blues, Soul, Folk. This music sounds like flannel, mildew, and stale beer. In a good way.

Dio's Holy Diver album is amazing. Couple of breakout hits on it, but the entire album rocks.

But the lyrics man. They are amazing in their amazingness. Did he tap into enternal truths? Are they just simulations of deepness? Do they only reveal inner meanings at the far end of sobriety? Are the childrens rhymes gone mad?

Sometimes for grins and giggles, I will read out the lyrics to some younger authers claiming it is a poem from one of the greats. its hard to keep a straight face throughout, but those youngsters, they think I am reading the secrets of life.

So just imagine, reading this out in SERIOUS POETRY VOICE

Shame on the night
For places I've been
And what I've seen
For giving me the strangest dreams
But you never let me know just what they mean
And oh so shame on the night

And shame on you
You've stolen the day
Snatched it away
But I saw the sky
And I never want to die
Now you know the reason why
I say oh shame on the night
You don't care what you've done
So I think I'd better run
Bunnies like beer because its made from hops.

Just bought tickets to see Cat Power in February doing her full cover of Bob Dylan's 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert.

This will be at the pretty intimate Keswick theater just outside Philadelphia. Our seats are good, but I was surprised to see how quickly they were selling out just two days after they went on sale.

The latest album from Knife is like Venom somehow time-traveled into 2023. Some really fun old-school thrash metal.

This new album from Shylmagoghnar came out of nowhere and has really impressed me as well. A one man black/death/folk/melodeath/atmospheric metal project that has a really breathtaking scope and epic sound. Unexpected, but fantastic.

I've listened to Daryl Hall and John Oates for years.

Back in the day there was a trio of loosely-related albums: Sacred Songs (Daryl Hall), Exposure (Robert Fripp), and "Scratch" (Peter Gabriel), all of which Fripp produced.

I've also really gotten into King Crimson, although that's a far more recent thing for me than with Daryl & John.

So, it was really cool to finally have Robert Fripp appear on Live from Daryl's House.

The entire playlist is great, but a couple of highlights are Heroes and Red:

I always love the year-end wrap-ups that show what you've listened to over the course of a year. According to Apple Music, my top 10 artists were:

1. Front Line Assembly (this tracks, since the FLA playlist was my primary running music)
2. Gary Numan (surprised me this was #2. I knew I'd listened to him quite a bit this year, but not that much)
3. Enslaved
4. Skinny Puppy
5. Bell Witch (their 90-minute single track albums were on quite a bit for background music)
6. Myrkur (I have listened to her new album a lot)
7. Thy Catafalque
8. Igorrr
9. Sigh
10. Nobuo Uematsu

My daughter got listed in Spotify's top 0.5% of Taylor Swift listeners. And what's truly frightening about that number is that she has only had Spotify a few months, and that's still not counting the amount of Tay-Tay she listens to on vinyl and CD.

My early results (I got Spotify's today, but I'll wait for Last.fm's in a month):

1. Viagra Boys (401 plays and counting)
2. Avatar
3. Monster Magnet
4. KMFDM
5. Metallica
6. Khemmis
7. Arcturus
8. Skinny Puppy
9. Greenleaf
10. Tom Waits

I never understand how Metallica winds up so high on the list... there seems to be a few-day period every year when I revisit my youth and they're all I play.

Mine was heavily skewed by my classic rock project.

1. The Who
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Bad Company
4. AC/DC
5. Metallica

Of those bands, the ONLY one I listen to with any regularity is AC/DC. It's particularly galling to have The Who as my top artist since I don't even like them.

Well...fuck. Skinny Puppy to split up for good after 41 years.

I think we all kinda knew it was coming after this tour (I get the sense Ogre and cEvin don't like each other very much), but still sucks. :(
