Re: What are you listening to right now?
I have to admit I’m rather intrigued by this combination of light jazz, Mercyful Fate, 90’s rap/nu-metal, industrial, ska, and early Marylin Manson shock rock. It’s far more entertaining that I would have expected.
Also, Rotpit’s new platter of horror-death spew is just vile. I love it.

Alexander Abraham - SEA/SONS
This is such a beautiful record. I got the LP and just everything about it is just *chef's kiss*. Incredible album art, the white/gold spatter vinyl, and then the album itself is just incredible. There's not a skippable track on the album, it's all this good.

Back in the day, Paste magazine use to include a CD sampler with different artists they were highlighting. Issue 17 (September 5, 2005) included the song “Throw it All Away” by Brandi Carlile, and it blew me away. Paste also included her in 2007 with “The Story.” She’s phenomenal. A voice that never fails to give me goose bumps.YellowKing wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 11:44 pm I was today years old when I discovered Brandi Carlile, and I've been beating myself up all day for not discovering her sooner. After diving into several albums I'm pretty much obsessed now. I was out walking the dog today when this track came on and it hit so hard I was damn near trying not to cry all the way back. Just one of those artists that nearly ever track hits close to home. Better late to the party than never, I guess.

New album from Bell Witch out today. Like their last one, it's a single 90-minute long-form song. And like their last one, it's an amazing listen.
I'm still bitter about them dipping out of a headline show after 30 gorram minutes, but I'll forgive that if they keep making albums like this.

If you threw The Cure and Joy Division in a blender and dropped it into 2023, Grave Pleasures would be the result.
New album released this week, it’s really fantastic.

I know anthemic is VNV Nation's schtick, but damn this single is good. I don't know how Ronan Harris manages to sound equally mournful and hopeful in each song while crafting hooks powerful enough to give you whiplash.

For Record Store Day this weekend I picked up this classic, Chet Baker's "Chet" reissued in mono for the first time in forever. Fantastic album. I also splurged and grabbed the 3LP Bill Evans Treasures set of unreleased stuff. I'm a huge Bill Evans fan so I couldn't pass it up.

How about some 1986 Japanese City Pop. Listen to this with headphones and tell me it's not pure fire.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I've got about 200 records and I'd say roughly 20% of them are junk I bought because it was cheap and I was just starting out building a collection. Since I've become much more selective, I'm randomly listening to albums then making a "keep or donate" decision. If there's low to zero chance I'll listen to it again, off it goes. It's been a fun little project and gives me an excuse to hit some albums I haven't spun in awhile.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
You just throwing them away? Maybe might should offer them up for shipping to anyone here who would give them a home.. Old albums are hard to come by these days. Course you'd have to fool with a listing of them all.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
One of the most consistently interesting metal bands working today, Thy Catafalque, has a new album coming out next month. They've released videos for the first couple tracks: one super heavy and menacing and the other more proggy and quirky.
They're one of only a few bands that I can proactively pencil into my "Top 10 Albums" for the year, even before the album is even released.

I know this isn't for everyone, but I'm really enjoying Brandee Younger's latest album. She's a jazz harpist greatly influenced by Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane, but blends it with soul/hip-hop vibes:

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Extreme's new album Six is out today. I listened to the first half during my commute this morning and am so happy to hear a band keeping guitar-driven rock music alive. Gary Cherone's voice still sounds great, and Nuno Bettencourt is still a monster on guitar. There is a lot of sick guitar work throughout the album, but the solo in lead single Rise is insane...call backs to Eddie van Halen, with Nuno's signature style. Awesome stuff
And for anyone not familiar with Nuno Bettencourt, another amazing bit of guitar playing, this time on acoustic...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I saw a recent interview between him and Rick Beato (YouTube music guy) where he told that McCartney story in more detail...were rehearsing for a performance together at the Grammys. He also has some really cool stuff to say about Eddie van Halen and their friendship. I've seen a few interviews with Nuno and he seems like a really cool, down to earth guy who just loves playing music.
