I got to meet Tom Wilson and Lea Thompson with a buddy of mine at a horror con a few years ago. Tom was very friendly and I got to tell him he was the best movie bully of all time which he appreciated.

Lea was a completely different level of nice, though. I wasn't buying an autograph or anything but she talked to us for several minutes asking about where we were from, etc. Just an absolutely lovely person which was a relief to find out since I'd been crushing on her since I was a kid.

Country singer Luke Combs won fame last year for his cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." This was somewhat controversial at the time due to Combs being a white guy kind of taking over a song clearly based in African-American urban economic anxiety.

But here's a moment from the Grammys where Combs and Chapman sing together:

I believe Chapman's original version is unsurpassable and completely sublime, but the above is really great to hear.

Seeing the audience go crazy for these two, and this classic song, was absolutely heartwarming. Combs did a great job of always giving credit to Chapman at every turn. You can tell he’s just in awe of her.

Yeah, I was expecting to hate him joining in, but not only did he do a respectable job singing it live, he was clearly in awe. She hasn't lost a beat; I hope she's getting a zillion dollars for the song surging again.

Coincidentally, I've been listening to Chapman on youtube during random song listening/video watching times. Just 2 days ago. Considering I hadn't listened to her for over 2 decades before that, I find the coincidence interesting.

That said, youtube algorithm could easily be responsible, as it promotes videos to millions of people every day, and they all form 1 large data set.

Oh well, still interesting even if the youtube overlord is ultimately responsible.

I can't stand the Luke Combs version because the original is so near and dear to me, but I admit the Grammy performance was awesome. I think it's important to note that Tracy Chapman has been out of the music scene since her last album in 2008, so this was a truly special moment.

I'm not a fan of current country music (well...any country music made after the 70s), so I don't know much about Combs. But I appreciated that he helped elevate country music by reaching out across genres and time to bring some diversity and a different viewpoint to the scene.

I looked up some history on Combs last night because I was curious. He has a brief, problematic history of somewhat racist tweets. He's since apologized and he seems like he's generally trying to be a better person.

I try not to knee-jerk react to stuff like past tweets. If social media was around when I was a teen, you'd have also seen a brief, problematic history of somewhat racist tweets. I grew up in North Carolina where practically everyone you knew told racist jokes or made racist comments. It's difficult to break out of that when you've been immersed in it every day since you were born. And some of these guys, depending on where they grew up, were probably immersed in it a lot more than I was.

I grew up, I learned that stuff was not OK, I changed. It's the folks that know better but don't change that should be condemned, not those who - like any human - made mistakes and are trying to learn from them.

While on the subject of the Grammys, here was Joni Mitchell performing "Both Sides Now" at age 80 after recovering from a brain aneurysm. I found it incredibly moving.

I think second chances should always be given to people who have made mistakes like that. Especially when they were younger. That's why cancel culture (well, much of it) annoys me so much. It's a "one strike and you're out" mentality in most cases. That's NOT how you foster change.

I'd be willing to bet most if not all the cancel people have done things in the past that would ne canceled now but they just havent been caught yet.

The entire Chapman-Combs performance of "Fast Car" is here:

I still like it, but... making it a duet seems to undercut the original situation.

The original song is a young women singing to her lover and eventually seeing him in the same position as her disappointing deadbeat father. The whole point is that she is finally asking her lover to commit to being more than that.

A duet structure makes them less complicated as partners while also really confusing who is doing the work (as well as who owns the escape/escapist car).

Did you also notice she's not wearing any ear monitors? She's just straight up killing that song and knowing she's doing it. I was kinda rolling my eyes last year when Combs was enjoying the benefits of her song, but if this is the end result of that then I guess maybe it was a good thing.

Variety
Brady Bedard, Columbia’s senior VP of pop promotion, was one of the song’s NYC drivers. He recalls his team’s execs convening “on a Friday morning and saying, ‘Hey, did you see Luke Combs put out a song called “Fast Car” on Today’s Top Hits?’ We got really excited about it, like, ‘That’s in the family. We have to figure out how to do this. That’s going to work.’ It sounded pop to us right away. It immediately had elements that could lead to pop success. And between sister labels, I think it was a perfect marriage.”

But then, “also, “we had to get clearance to do it,” Kappy says. He means from Chapman herself. They had already received the blessing of the apparently retired singer-songwriter to cover her song, but now they wanted her permission to fully promote it to radio — even though, technically, they shouldn’t have needed it. “Whatever way she decided to go, we were going to go. We’re just not that camp, and Luke’s not that artist,” to push it to No. 1 without getting a nod of approval. “It’s her song. That’s the right thing to do, and we got to her, and it was blessed for us to do more with it.”
