Good question, hadn't thought of it. Let me get back to you on that.Scoop20906 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 11:48 am Ok, I am really reading the rules now and .... there really is alot here and it seems absolutely bloodthirsty.
One question about timing. If a player has a copy of the play at night and chooses to read/destroy it/them and another player tries to steal the play from them which comes first? The theft and then they player read/destroy order is cancelled OR lets say the player destroys the play then does the steal player not get the play?

Stealing Plays takes place before Destroying Plays at Night. If a Play is targeted for both Stealing and Destruction on the same Night, it is Stolen and not Destroyed.

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
Roles are out. When they're picked up, the game will proceed into Night 0.
There is no time limit to Nights or Days. Each player must submit their order for the Night before the game can proceed into Day, so there is no rush. Discussion during Night is permitted and encouraged.

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
Okay, here we go.
Let's have the smart foolish people talk about each role/team/win conditions, and how they think that player would play, etc - and what the goals are, etc - cause yeah - that may help.
There is a lot going on it would seem.
Lynched, murdered, inspired, find love, drive people insane.

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
Added: If several players try to Steal from a player holding one or more Copies but the number of thieves is greater than the number of Copies, Copies are assigned randomly among the thieves.
Added to clarify: The winning conditions of the Alienist and Hildred Castaigne are only dependant on whether or not any active players are Insane Art Students or not ("active player" = not murdered nor committed).

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
Tonight someone may be murdered.
People will look for the Muse. If anyone finds her, they are now lovers... if more than one finds her, she will try to eliminate all but one.
Tomorrow, we will vote to search someone's house.
If that person has a copy of the book and is 'insane', they will be sent to the Insane Asylum (out of the game, but not the same as Murdered - nuance)
- and that can't happen tomorrow, because no one has a copy of the book but Hildred, who always reads as 'sane' even though they are the real nut job.
- - to that point, Hildred is immune from 'day lynch' and only Hildred kills at night - so they will never be removed from the game.
Muse will also leave the game by way of Murder, as they will never be insane.
Muse may relay a message through Lagom to another player.
Sounds like...
Artists...
Artists Must get inspired - it's their win condition.
Artists may try and get inspired by Muse and then try to get the game to end with them as the only lover. That can start tonight.
Artists may try and get inspired by getting a copy, reading it, and then go crazy trying to get the game to end. That can't really start until they steal or are passed a copy - and then one more night to read it... so Day 2 at the earliest for that scenario for anyone.
Artists can end the game 'lynching' any insane artist. But making other people insane, knowing who is, and getting their homes searched, is not really in their control so much.
An Artist may choose to go insane (if they have a copy), or be forced into that state by the Muse. If every living art student is Insane, they can win as a group of individual clowns, I think. An insane clown posse.
Some artists and the Muse will know about each other's role.
Insane artists who destroy their copy of the play will be hard to lynch.
Muse...
waits to inspire One player, but they need to find her.
drives extra lovers insane if she wants, she only wants one.
Can relay a message through Lagom to another player. No replies - so instruction only in her relayed message... perhaps telling a lover to try to lynch one of her insane lovers or something.
Alienist...
Trying to get all insane artists 'lynched' (or even just removed from the game?) when the end game comes.
Will read as 'insane' on a lynch, but would need to have a book to be removed from the game/sent to the asylum.
Can 'scan' a player each night and learn if they are insane or not.
Hildred...
Might murder at night, but may wait until they have enough artists they think would be insane.
Needs to send a copy of the play to a player, basically inviting them to become inspired by way of insanity...
Or- actually, I suppose they could not send it out (pretty sure that is not the best strategy) but hope that the Muse is somehow exposed publicly and she has to make players insane herself?
Wins as long as One artist is insane when the game ends.
The game ends when:
all copies of the Play are destroyed (I assume the original copy in Hildred's hands doesn't count)
or when all Art Students are Insane, Murdered or Committed to an Asylum.
So, artists becoming Insane quickens the end-game requirements, but is the only way for some artists to win the game eventually, it would seem to naturally turn into... as only one can win the game inspired sanely with the Muse.
Also, it seems that there are at least a couple ways a couple of sets of players can win with their own win conditions.
One thing I wonder how will play out is just at the 'lynching' stage, what will be the real thought process that we go through to choose a lynch target and what possibly can anyone say to even remotely tell someone not to vote for them. For instance, there is not really a "I am the Seer" moment that I can see. Maybe I'm missing something there.
Also, the "copy of the play". Very interesting. The game piece is fascinating in its ability to be sorta the inverse of a Protection Ward. If you don't have a copy of the play, you will never be sent to the asylum- and Hildred will also probably keep you alive at night I imagine. So the only way to lynch an insane player may be to catch them with a copy on the exact right day.

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
Thanks Lagom for the game and thanks to Unagi for the overview. I read the rules a month ago but I didn't retain much so reading overview helps. So, the main choice is do you read the book to get inspired but open yourself up to being put in the asylum or do you destroy the book and search for the muse. Also, if you do find the muse then you get inspired but she may become your black widow if she has more than one lover. We don't have to search the for the muse tho if we want to go the book route and if we do then we want to share the book with as many people to force the end of the game and hope to survive. Correct me if I am wrong...

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
So, if i understand the breakdown, an artist can choise to not read the book and not pursue the muse and basically be immortal?
Or read the book one say, then destroy the book and be immortal?
If that happens does that mean the game is infinite?
Also what happens if the myse dies right away?

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
immortal...well, I mean you will lose if you are not inspired...what is losing in this game? Immortal but with a useless life?Punisher wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 4:15 pm So, if i understand the breakdown, an artist can choise to not read the book and not pursue the muse and basically be immortal?
Or read the book one say, then destroy the book and be immortal?
If that happens does that mean the game is infinite?
Also what happens if the myse dies right away?
Read the book and do not get thrown in the asylum. I'd assume you'd rot there, never to taste freedom.
Game is infinite, Impossible, I'm not infinite as we're not immortal.
Muse dies, she loses.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

Re: The King in Yellow (Roles are out!)
My understanding, which can very likely be wrong, is that the artists can only be thrown in the asylum if they are insane and they have a book, and their house is searched. Thats why 8 think they are immortal as long as they aren't searched at the same time as the other 2 conditions apply.Lassr wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 10:41 pmimmortal...well, I mean you will lose if you are not inspired...what is losing in this game? So read book, go insane.
If not searched then destroy book.
They are now 100% safe until endgame. They cant be caught on a search and that crazy guy doesn't want to lill them.
By immortal i mean cant be killed in the game.
Also, i plan on living forever. My very close call last year means i almost screwed that plan up, but being here now means my plan is working!

Re: The King in Yellow (Night 0)
Paris sleeps...
As you converge on the dingy student café Le Veau Gras, sipping absinth in the company of your fellow starving would-be artists, the conversation turns to the subject of ideas. Where do they come from? From dreams? From our deepest desires? From the conversations men have with each other about the nature of being? Or perhaps through some alien mind-projection from outer space?
That last remark sends shudders of laughter through the patrons of the café, but the merriment soon abides. There is little joy these days. If you do not manage to find inspiration soon, you will surely die starving in the gutter, forgotten and alone.
It is Night.
Art Student without the Play: Will you Steal or Seduce? (Optional)
Sane Art Student with the Play: Will you Read or Destroy?
Insane Art Student with the Play: Who will recieve a copy of the Play?
Muse: Will you Write someone? (Optional)
Muse with at least two Lovers: Will you drive a Lover insane? (Optional)
Alienist: Will you Analyze someone? (Optional)
Hildred Castaigne: Will you a copy the Play to someone, or will you Murder someone? (Optional)

Re: The King in Yellow (Night 0)
A note on causality chains during Nights: Each Night Order happens simultaneously if at all possible (one exception is when the same Copy of a Play is simultaneously targeted for both Theft and Destruction, in which case the Theft happens first), but effects of Night Orders happen at the end of the Night and cannot affect current Night Orders.
What this means is, if Player A uses his Night Order to Copy a Play to Player B (who does not have a Copy), and Player C uses his Night Order to Steal the Play off of Player B, the Theft fails because Player B does not yet own a copy of the Play. If Player C re-attempts the Theft the following Night, and Player B still has the Copy, however, the Theft will succeed.
