Something I learned from an engineer: Replace the duck tape with gaffer's tape. It's better for every application except for waterproofing.

Yeah, I've been told duck tape is for waterproofing* and that gaffer's tape works better for almost any other duck tape need - stronger material, stronger adhesive, doesn't degrade, and doesn't leave a nasty residue.

Those are exactly the reasons, with the qualifier that it's harder to find and more expensive. Then again, the rolls are massive and last forever.

As to name origins, it's generally believed that gaffer's tape is so called because it's what is used on stage and film sets by the gaffer (the head electrician) to tape down cables.

No.

Duck cloth + adhesive = duck tape.
WWII took it a bit further as slang (it was a waterproofing tape - like water off a duck's back.)

To be fair, it's unclear when the actual term 'duck tape' was applied to it, but it absolutely predated 'duct tape' (which makes sense, given that it wasn't for ducts - it was for waterproofing ammo crates.) Slang, especially military slang, can be hard to pin down. Etymologists still aren't sure where the word 'jeep' even came from, even though it originated at the same time (popular theory: the model of military 'jeep' that got the most use was the Ford General Purpose, aka the GP.)

Further complications include a Popeye character named Eugene the Jeep that first appeared in 1936, long before the Willy's corporation won the Army contract for the vehicles that came to be known as Jeeps.
There is some credence to the idea that soldiers started calling the versatile vehicle Jeeps since they could, like the Popeye character, "go anywhere."

Someone needs to inform the major manufacturers like little-known 3M that they’re spelling it wrong on their packaging and have been for decades (they and others use ‘duct tape’ on their non-foil versions as well)
