Yeah, there are other hints at it too, with another one being "I used to be an actuary, but now look at me..." or something like that.

Quick question: Finally set up an outpost and built one of the large landing pads that has a shipbuilder attached. I've read many times that these allow you to use almost any module from any shipbuilder. But I noticed that every single module was either 1x1, 2x1 or 3x1. No 2x2 or 3x3 modules at all. Is this normal or a bug? Is there something else I can build to get these larger components? Are they tied to level (only level 19 after nearly 60 hours) or do I need more levels in ship design (only 1 level currently)?

Not sure if this is the same problem, but I played for many hours before realizing that to see additional types of the same module you had to use the A/D keys (on the PC) to scroll through variations of the same type of module. I had totally missed this through at least 2 upgrade sessions of my original ship.

I don't think I've ever noticed any 3x3 modules at any of the shipyards I've visited, so it's news to me that they even exist.

I also didn't know that the player-buildable shipyard supposedly has a full repertoire of all available modules. One of the things I lost when I rolled back my save was my really sweet Ecliptic Claymore. I'd have to invest more skill points in order to really build one, but I need to see if it gives me access to that cockpit module. I could probably find a way to make it work with my Frankenstein Razorleaf. I never get tired of hearing Spacers crap their spacesuits when they recognize that ship, even though it already looks nothing like the ship they are recognizing. #DreadPirateRobertsInSpace

You have to unlock (buy) them first. Look for the ship manufacturer HQs.

Locations, stolen from Reddit. Spoilered for those who prefer to come up on them on their own.
Spoiler:
Another important factor in ship building is that while basic habs, gear, cockpits and all aesthetic blocks are found at normal technicians, each manufacturer has a Headquarters with a salesmen that has special parts. these include Huge 3 block wide bridges, improved landing gear with better thrust, special 2x2, 3x2 and 3x3 hab blocks for bigger ship designs, and for some designers there are aesthetic 1x1 habs for fitting the exterior aesthetic of the manufacturer better. Heres the locations

Deimos HQ = Deimos Staryard, orbiting Deimos, Moon of Mars

Stroud Eklund HQ = Staryard in Narion, orbiting Dalvik

Nova HQ = their staryard is abandoned, the technician on titan sells all their stuff

HopeTech = Hopetown, on Polvo, in the Valo system

Taiyo = showroom in ryujin tower on neon, take the elevator in the red ryujin area at the end of the main mall. Turns out they do sell a bridge, its just identical to their cockpit visually. RIP Taiyo fans, at least you get the best visibility of any cockpit in game.

For hopetech, deimos and stroud you cant just talk to the tech, you must talk to the salesmen inside the buildings

The internet is your friend: Starfield Shipyards list: Ship Manufacturers & Shipyard locations for unique ship parts
Before we get into the Shipyards and Ship Manufacturers of Starfield, it's important to make clear that there's a major and important distinction to be made between the big and small ship parts creators - and between specialist shipyards and general ship technicians. Allow us to explain.

While Starfield has almost 20 unique ship manufacturers, only five of them truly matter in terms of building a unique, notable, original ship.

Basically, the five main, major companies each have their own design and speciality, and these are always in the areas that determine the outward-facing appearance of the ship - structural elements, cockpits, and even the ship’s inside spaces, aka the ‘habs’. For habs the manufacturer difference is particularly important, as explained in our Starfield ship habs guide.

Need clarification.
If I just go straight to the various ship planets and buy all their parts I can then use all the parts at my ship pad?
If so that will be very useful for building my ultimate ship.

Unless I'm mistaken, you can't just buy a part, you have to attach it to your ship, so that's a limit. Also you can't transfer parts between ships. If I'm wrong on this, let me know! :pop:

I need to get around to doing something like this. I still am making periodic encumbered walks back to the lodge to unload gobs of things over to my safe-of-holding. It's getting a little... OCD.
This is a big-brain solution for storage. I haven't tried it myself, but a friend confirmed that it works like a charm.

Hmm, I've built this (on a smaller scale) at my Adaptive Frame location and weirdly, it worked for a while but now has stopped working. I have a bunch of stuff in the transfer container and I wonder if one of those items is keeping it from working. I've investigate further.

Some LIST colonists asked for my help obtaining iron. I don't have it in stock but there is a world in system that has it as a resource so I figured I could go mine some. Only I seem to have sold my cutter! Knowing Starfield logic I can probably warp out to buy one but I still have to laugh a little.

I ran into the same thing -- it worked initially, then stopped working, then seemingly started working again after I jiggered around some things. I'm not sure why it's behaving weirdly other than Bethesda jank/bugginess.

I had read somewhere that they are buggy and sometimes need to be re-tweaked, or - more likely I heard it in a video.

I've got it working now. There seemed to be some issues with wrongly placed output links, although I swear I connected them up correctly. I'll keep monitoring to see if the system develops bugs.

When I initially tested the system, the resources ended up in the terminal container, so I knew the linkage was correct, otherwise they wouldn't have ended up there. When it stopped working, everything just sat in the transfer container (or whichever container in the chain where I manually placed it) and didn't go anywhere.

So, PureDark, the modder that decided to charge for his DLSS mod (discussed earlier in the thread), then responded to the backlash by putting DRM on his mod, has apparently responded to the cracking of said DRM by threatening to add malware to the mod in the future.

Yup, that's what was happening to me. To fix I had to delete and reapply the output link coming from the transfer container. And it didn't stay fixed :( so I had to occasionally do the fix again.

I finally got my ass off of Mars and poked around the Deimos Staryard. I get what you're saying now - you can get the big pieces there, but only if you are using the ship builder at that location. You can't get them added to your selection at home (which was the impression I had from what I'd read in a couple of places.)

Which is a pain in the ass - if you want to see which parts go well together, you'll have to go to six different locations to try them, and there's no way to combine the cockpit from Location A with the hull from Location B unless you build yourself a Frankenstein and fly there with the pieces in place. And if they don't fit? Start over.

Ugh.

Sheesh, is it supposed to be this hard to place a container? Am I missing something? I try moving the container around and it keeps sticking to another stack were I don't want it, or it tells me I can't place it someplace but I really want it there but a bit higher, etc.

The problem is that this clever storage system has a big shortfall. I have nothing in my ship now but I want to build an He-3 farm on another world, so I need the parts. Unless I'm missing something, there's no way to get a specific resource except by checking each storage container and most are out of reach. This wouldn't be an issue if I could build scaffolding or stairs, but they don't seem to be in the outpost builder, at least at the skill level I am. Do I get stairs or scaffolding later on? Or should I just build a horizontal storage system? I am flummoxed

Yeah, trying to place storage containers, in particular, with any precision is a mess. If I get too close to another container, the one I'm trying to position will snap over to the other one, and usually not where I'd like it to go. It can be frustrating.

I anticipated wanting to cherry pick resources from storage, so I went horizontal instead of vertical for the automatic system and have long rows that are only two containers high. I can quickly scan the bottom layer from the ground and hop up on top to check the top layer. I do have storage towers as well, but they are connected to individual resource harvesters, so each tower only contains a single resource that I can pull from the bottom.

I know that there are variables that can be adjusted that improves snapping and placement, but I have yet to build an outpost, so I'm not completely sure what's going on.

I've build my base and put up all the workbenches and the research station, but now I'm kind of wondering what I'm going to do with all of it. I wasn't really planning on making a manufacturing center as cash isn't any kind of issue. But it was good experience.

The thing I went with is small storage containers = stairs. I would build rows of large storage 3 high access the first two layers from the ground and then climb to the top and access the top layer from there. Note that I gave up on general storage real quick as collecting all the things in case I needed them was not generally fruitful. Mark it for tracking if you need it for research, buy it wherever you find it, dump it all into research, keep buying it because the tracking doesn't give a damn that you already fulfilled 90% of the requirements, then eventually track down that last resource and call it done.

IIRC, that dialogue does have an [Attack] option. Or maybe I just improvised...

Here's some free survey data for anyone having trouble finding enough adhesive, especially in the early game:
Spoiler:
Native to Gagarin, in the Alpha Centauri system.

...and you can make a farm for it! I think I mentioned that a dozen pages or so ago.
