Another computer building question

Post by knob »

Could somebody fill me in on the difference between a AMD 64 bit processors that are Socket 754 and Socket 939? (940 is the one that requires registered memory, right?)

Mostly, I'm just wondering if there's any major performance differences between the two.

I was lazy. I did a quick Google search for "difference between 754 and 939" and came up with the 754 being unable to support dual channel and that the performance differences are so small, you couldn't really notice.

But then I wonder if the dual channel equals a much greater performance boost.

I'd buy the 939(actually I just did). The 754 has been relegated to be a lower performance option for the future. The difference between the 939 and the 754 when I went to the computer show last week was $5-10.

Plus it has the full 1Ghz HyperTransport pipe which is clocked 20% higher than the 754. I'm loving mine. It made a huge difference in load times with Vampire. I'd say it went from well over a minute or two to load the downtown hub to about 15 seconds with the same exact ddr3200 ram over a regular athlon xp 3000+.
