new mobo what ram...problems

Post by Daehawk »

Thought Id start a thread make it easier to see.

Ok got the latest mobo in for my friend and same error...memory error #55 . Its an ASUS rog strix Z790 board. Its the same memory though that hasn't worked in THREE new mobos all different. Mem only read and boots from slotB1 B2..the outer two most slots from the CPU...ram in either A! or A2 causes NO boot.

The ram he has is 4 16g stix of Crucial 6800 .

At this point Ive told him he has to return and try new ram...3 boards with the same problem HAS to be a mem incompatible problem even if any stick runs fine in outer slots but not inner.

Can anyone recommend memory>? He wants to have 64 gig right now and later on go to 132 gig.

Im leaning to Gskill trident 2 sticks of 32....I need it to run in dual bank for the speed. Im also leaning 6200 speed....maybe try 16 gig sticks..as ASUS's site doesn't list 166g stix just 32g ones.

Is the RAM DDR5?

Also, error 55 could be a faulty or mis-seated CPU/cooling or a BIOS issue.

Yes ddr55....Also the PCPARTPICKER lied to him....it doesn't show it as incompatible but ASUS's own site doesn't like it as compitable. He has now found some off ASUS's own site that is ok..Gskill Trident but at 6000mhz instead of 6800....it also shows the 4 stix as not working that he got only 2 sticks at another speed. ..shrug. So he ordered only 2 stix of 600 32g instead. Should be ok.

Ok guys still no go. We are stumped and frustrated. OO you guys are our only help in this barring finding a shop.

We have tried 3 different motherboards and 2 different rams. No matter what the pc wont boot if there is ram in either A1 or A2...B1 and B2 are fine...can have one stick in either or both in and it boots fine.

We are at a total loss as to why this happens. We've looked online, talked to both motherboard companies and ram companies.....and we have seen this before or know how to preceed.

What is going on here guys?

Well after both of us finding 2 more solutions to try online and both failing and with the CPU being the only constant we've decided its a memory controller problem with the CPU itself and he is going to RMA it for a replacement . We'll see if that fixes it. If not we're seeking professional help lol.

Ok we gave up. He knows a guy that makes YT videos on repairing and building PCs but in the end he decided to just take it with the ram working in the last two slots and use it and forget about dual channel. He is video editing and playing older games and Ive always seen dual channel aint a big deal now so should be fine.
