Return of the Cicadas

Post by msduncan »

Saw a story that the last of Brood 2 died yesterday. A collector had put a handful of them into a refrigerator and slowed their metabolism. They lived a few weeks longer than the rest of their brood. The last insect died yesterday.

I went poking around and found this video about the entire event. It is a wonder to behold and boggles the mind of the wonders of nature on this planet.

Videos like this make me completely in awe of what must be out there in the universe. If countless wonders like this happen here on one planet -- imagine the infinite possibilities.
It's 109 first team All-Americans.
It's a college football record 61 bowl appearances.
It's 34 bowl victories.
It's 24 Southeastern Conference Championships.
It's 15 National Championships.

At some places they play football. At Alabama we live it.

This had been our year not to have cicadas, but katydids are another matter.

MSD, I seem to remember tons of cicadas in Birmingham around 1983 or 84. Would that fit the Brood you're in?
Much prefer my Nazis Nuremberged.

LOL!! Perfect.

My wife has been commenting on them lately. I absolutely LOVE them. I remember all those times as a small child growing up I'd hear them. even within the last couple decades I remember them. So soothing to me. Wish I could sleep with my head in an open window.

I like them as well, though they can get EXTREMELY loud around here at times.

Also, as a new pool owner, I notice they apparently love to commit suicide by drowning. Those things are so big I imagine they could cause some problems in a filter or even the filter line.

2024 marks the year of the massive Midwest cicada brood.
The periodical cicada brood, known as Brood XIII, is set to emerge across parts of northern Illinois and Indiana in late May 2024, Dr. Gene Kristy, dean of Behavioral and Natural Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati said in a 2023 press release.
...
And the Northern Illinois Brood itself is huge, with a reputation for the "largest emergency of cicadas anywhere," according to the university.

Other broods expected in the late spring and early summer of 2024 include the Great Southern Brood known as "Brood XIX," which are often found in the southern half of the state across central, western and eastern Illinois, the University of Illinois said.
...
Brood XIX cicadas, meanwhile, are slated to emerge in the St. Louis area, as well as parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Oh, joy. XIII is mostly further north than I am, and XIX is more to the west of me, but I'll likely see some overlap from both. That means that having the windows open this spring is going to require that I wear headphones to watch TV.

How many online communities survive long enough to span cicada generations?

Is this OOs 3rd or 2nd?

I hope we get many here. Kinda quiet without them.
