FYI: if you have Amazon Prime, Strange New Worlds Season 1 is currently available to watch through streaming until the end of the month (Paramount is making it available as a sampler, presumably to get more people invested for Season 2 which is coming out soon)

It's also on Youtube and I just finshed watching Season 1. This is some of the best Star Trek ever. Love all the characters, especially the re imagining of TOS regulars. It's a very fun and very ST TOS type show. Love it!

I liked S1 quite a lot and will re-subscribe to Paramount when S2 is complete. I haven't seen the last season of Picard yet, and I hope there'll be more Lower Decks soon, too. Maybe even Discovery, who knows? I'll keep Paramount just long enough to get caught up on ST, and then drop it again for another couple of years.

I was a bit disappointed that they made her another Guinan though. I would’ve preferred just an eccentric character, not another immortal with all the answers. I hope they rein that in.

But, it’s Carol Kane. I’ll take whatever she can give. She’s just absolutely entertaining in anything she does.

I was okay with it since I was fascinated with her history with Spock's mother. Everyone knows about Sarek but I hope they explore that relationship a bit more.

I also like the shared trauma that Nurse Chapel and Dr. m'Benga have from fighting in the Klingon War. Along with...

being a Delta Force team hopped up on enhancing drugs. It would be interesting if they were a part of Section 31 during the war because operatives would definitely have access to Witcher potions like the one they took!

I didn’t consider the Spock’s mother angle. That could be good, I agree.

edit: you know, the more I think about
Spoiler:
M'Benga and Nurse Chapel's backstory now including some pretty strong hints that they were also super soldiers during the Klingon War, the more annoyed I get with that. Why can't we have a doctor and a nurse who value life above all else? Why do they now need to be turned into Marvel superheroes? I actually liked the backstory for M'Benga and his daughter. This though? It feels like a blatant ploy to attract action film fans. The actors in those roles are good enough to bring real dimension to those characters without such a cheap stunt. Especially the actor playing M'Benga. I did like that he struggled a little against the action aspects of his work during the war, so hopefully that plays more into it in the future.

Huge fan of the original series and many/most of the movies, but never got into any of the other ST shows for whatever reason.

This feels a LOT like the OG to me. My only nit to pick is that Pike acts, looks, talks and even walks a bit too much like the OG Kirk. Is that by design?

It feels like they decided to make him as 60’s Kirk as possible.

I have no idea what the Gorn kerfuffle is, and it’s not detracted from my enjoyment at all :P

Also, should I watch ST:Discovery before going further? It feels like I’m missing some callbacks.

Haven't watched this show but have seen many clips of Anson Mount as Pike. He seems to be what the books I used to read of the character made him to be. Yes a lot like Kirk but a bit older with experience. I used to love reading all the ST books I could buy. One a night nearly in the late 80s early 90s. The adventures of Robert April and Captain Pike before Kirk got the Enterprise.

EDIT: Be sure to catch Anson on podcasts....

Captain Pike is the main Captain in season 2 of Discovery, which takes place before Strange New Worlds. So I would say watch Discovery through season 2 then start watching Strange New Worlds. After season 2 of Discovery that series goes in a very different non Pike direction.

Is season 2 of Strange New Worlds good? The first season was decent enough, so I feel like I should be interested in the new season but....I'm not really.

98 and 99% RT for seasons 1 and 2. Wow.

After a few eps of this, I switched to watching Discovery, which I’m actually preferring so far, but I plan to watch both.

They're both good, as is Picard*.

* - Seasons one (pretty good) and three (very good). We shall not speak of season 2.

I could live without this latest episode. I rolled my eyes a little too often.

Did Anson negotiate a 2 hour work week for this season or something?

The episode was...ok. My main problem is they are taking ideas from old Trek and reskinning them. But Goldsman is gonna Goldsman.

On last week's episode:
Spoiler:
I have seen Toronto in a thousand shows and films. I think that's the first time I've ever seen Toronto used as Toronto.

I laughed at the reference to that fact.

Well, it's MOTS, but in my opinion, that means it's great. If you didn't care for Season 1, then I don't think Season 2 is going to do anything for you, and you are just weird :)

I'm just a big fan of Mount. If you'd told me I'd get the actor playing Cullen Bohannon on the bridge of a Starfleet vessel when Hell on Wheels was on the air, I would've kerplotzed.

So this season has been…okay. It has had a few good episodes, but it also has had way too many “emotional Spock” storylines that I just find grating after a while.

But oddly enough, I really enjoyed the Lower Decks crossover. Go figure. I assumed I’d hate it. I think it speaks to how good Jack Quaid is. He brings such sincerity to Boimler that you can’t help but like him.
