MS Bing has hijacked my browser

Post by dbt1949 »

When I type in something on Google it goes there and it immediately switches to a Bing search result.
I've looked on the internet on how to change this but nothing works.Any ideas?

I'd also suggest scanning and cleaning with the free AdwCleaner. It does a pretty good job of easily finding and removing adware, toolbars, Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), and browser hijackers from your system.

I tried that but it didn't detect it.

It says it's google.
When I search with google it will find my inquiry and then immediately go to bing and find it.

Hold down shift while launching it to go into safe mode and see if it happens. Open safe mode, not refresh.

Its probably either en extension or the old bing redirect hijacker. Anti virus should clear it or perhaps Malwarebytes.

That did not open it up in safe mode for me.

In that case, the simplest fix is probably just resetting or refreshing Firefox.

I have an anti virus software (webroot) and it does not detect it. Malwarebytes doesn't detect it either.

I refreshed Firefox and apparently that fixed the problem.

Thanks for all your help!

Doing so nukes all of your settings, extensions, and themes, so make sure that you reinstall the ones you need and adjust any settings.

It was most likely an add on.

I had to fix a similar situation on Wife's computer a few years back. It wasn't a virus, but definitely some unwanted malware. IIRC I was able to fix hers by uninstalling...something...that had installed itself. Glad your fix was fairly easy.

Starting to question if I have malware or a virus. Windows doesn't find anything. But I cant get TF2 to actually start up and run.....it looks for a game then when it finds one it tries to load me in but never does. I feel its a fake attempt for some reason....then sometimes when I try to use my normal browser Google search it makes me do one of those picture proof things...click on all pic with a bus in it or a traffic light in it stuff.

Maybe its just one of those weeks.

Google does that to me occasionally, mostly because my security software blocks it's nosy checks from seeing who I am.

As for TF2 - it seems like an odd thing for a virus to do, masquerading as an 18-year-old game.

Have you tried repairing it in Steam? And if so, have you tried a true clean uninstall (uninstall the game, then delete the install folder and any sort of /my games or /my documents, etc. folders related to TF2, plus <Steam-folder>/userdata/<user-id>/440/.

And then reinstall.

Also, why is this in DBT's browser thread?

Dont know why I put it in here. Felt like kinda the samey..Hijacked. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but not deep enough to go in and me myself remove everything clean. It even loaded all the way to the end of the bar then just stopped. It will sit there and then if I dont touch it it just closes as if I never asked it to load me in.Im looking at the server screen again. Shrug.Im playing too much ESO to care much right now but when Im ready to play some TF2 this is gonna be a problem.

When something wants to download something without you knowing does it show up in the little download meter?
