Dead Island 2

Post by Smoove_B »

I know opinions on the original varied, but I was a big fan (after the fan patches that fixed the FOV and head bob). I wanted Dying Light to be more like Dead Island, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Anyway, I must have missed that Dead Island 2 was a thing, so here's a trailer.

Hard to say, but yeah "Island" seems to be...a definition open to broad interpretation.

Hmmm...

I remember it was announced years ago. But then it evaporated. I didn't realize that it was still a possibility. I'm definitely in. (Currently on my 6th or 7th playthrough.)

Yes.

Dead Island 2 Hands-On Preview
With Butcho dead and the Blood Drive secured, the demo is over. And, thanks to this little ocean-side showing, it’s obvious that Dead Island 2 isn’t just alive, but kicking, too. While it may have risen from the grave, though, it still has a lot to prove. Dambuster has made a solid first impression, but it comes coupled with a distinct sense of familiarity. Dead Island 2 appears to share a huge amount of common ground with not just the original Dead Island, but also its step-sibling, Dying Light. For long term fans this may be exactly the news they want to hear, but even at this early stage, I’m already struck with the sense of having played this all before. The gory combat, the weird weapons, the crafting, the odd-ball humour; after one Dead Island game, an expansion, and two Dying Lights, it's all feeling a bit parts of the same corpse.

So is Dead Island 2 just the walking dead, or will it be something genuinely surprising? The streets of Los Angeles beyond Santa Monica Pier will hold the answer. There’s so much I’ve not seen. What is the open world like? What twists will the story take? What kind of wild characters can I build with the Skill Deck? How varied is the mission design? How good are the jokes? It’s all this that will determine if Dambusters’ efforts are a gory good time, or just a sequel that’s arrived a decade too late.

There are plenty of great open world zombie games. I am a big open world fan with no sign of open world fatigue. Still, I am interested to see what a tighter, more directed narrative can do with the genre.

I find that I much prefer a series of open areas (large levels that you don't have to approach linearly, each mostly self-contained) to open worlds. It's the 'sweet spot' between linear and directionless.

My current playthrough of Dead Island DE has me hyped for this, which probably means I'll end up buying it from Epic rather than waiting for it to release on Steam.

Today I learned that Alexa Game Control is an upcoming thing, and that it's integrated into Dead Island 2.
Use your voice to interact with NPCs, swap your weapons, and much more on your favorite PC and Xbox games. Play with any microphone or headset, no Alexa device required. And Alexa is still there to make sure you can stay in the game with smart home control, reminders, and even food ordering.

Using voice commands enables the most natural and human gaming experiences. Talk directly to NPCs with natural dialogue and issue commands to your virtual teammates with your voice. Alexa Game Control enhances the gameplay of each game to make the experience feel more natural.
I am intrigued...

Driving in Dead Island and Riptide kind of sucks, so as long as the game doesn't force me to trek back and forth over long distances, I won't miss the driving.

I've been interested in voice commands in games for years (I had the VOXBOX voice recognition accessory for the TRS-80 Model 1 back in the early 80s), so I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works. The game isn't built around the feature, so even if the answer is "poorly" then it's just a matter of ignoring it.

In my experience, voice commands work better for complex games with functions that aren't time-sensitive (like simulators.)

It worked fantastically in Elite Dangerous. I loved being able to extend gear or cut power with voice commands.

Looks like something I'll grab on sale. I'm not really a huge fan on any of the first person zombie games, but it looks like it could be fun at a cheap price.
