Re: Too soon to start thinking about 2024?
He burnt them to the ground in 2016 and they got in line and became much worse for the nation and for my neighborhood and state (and family ferchrissake). I don't know what happens in 2024 but I have no faith things will get better with further exposing and dismantling of the GOP anymore. I've been wrong about their dismantling to date underestimating how so many can be so horrible and/or so easily misled or at "the best case" so willing to look away from the big picture in favor of their pet project.
I suppose there's still hope that this the storm before the calm.

Credit? He'll wag his finger but when the time comes, he'll line up and support whatever POS the GOP nominates, guaranteed - unless he's not seeking re-election in 2024.

Guaranteed? No. If it's Trump, there's zero chance Romney supports him in 2024. Romney will be going for re-election in a state that likes him more than Trump, after all.

Mitt consistently bends with the prevailing wind. Even if he's recently grown a spine, it will be a flexible one.

I don't think it's flexible to where he'll support Trump in 2024 after not doing so in 2020 AND voting to remove him from office *twice*.Kraken wrote: ↑Wed Feb 22, 2023 3:05 pmMitt consistently bends with the prevailing wind. Even if he's recently grown a spine, it will be a flexible one.

It is in Mitt’s self interest for Trump to lose. A re-elected Trump would seek revenge on him and try to force Romney out of the GOP.

Trump loves to collect former foes who then bend the knee, though, and would happily accept Romney as a toadie if Romney was willing to do that.

I don't think Mitt has national ambitions beyond the Senate, so he'll say and do whatever pleases the most Utahns.

Didn't that already happen once, even becoming a meme, and didn't Romney turn against him again but even harder? Romney blew with the wind and I actually think didn't like how that turned out. It remains to be seen if he can be convinced to blow Trump again, but I would place small amounts of money that he won't. He's never looked back since Jan 6.

Re: Too soon to start thinking about 2024?
You're probably thinking of the famous photo of Trump and Romney when they had dinner together in early 2017 when Romney was reportedly under consideration for Secretary of State, where Romney was looking like a hostage victim. FWIW I don't really blame Romney for considering that (if that was ever truly on the table) especially at that time when Trump was at least semi-willing to listen to non-Trump advisers. But I don't recall Romney ever going full toadie a la Graham.LordMortis wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 7:21 amDidn't that already happen once, even becoming a meme, and didn't Romney turn against him again but even harder? Romney's sort of unique in his ability to be an anti-Trump Republican and be electorally viable in Republican circles, I think due to his pre-Trump stature and due to Utah being a relatively unique Republican state.

Romney is also 75 and very rich. He doesn't really have to worry about his future career prospects.

Re: Too soon to start thinking about 2024?
I think what this comes down to is that Desantis is going to have to run a *perfect* campaign to beat Trump.
Trump is a known quality. His flaws and stupidity and assholery are baked in. There aren't many scandals that could dent his support among the faithful. After all, they all already know he tried to overthrow the Republic, and they love him for it.
Desantis, though, needs to promise everything Trump promised (including all the hate and the lib-ownage), but he has to do it without a misstep than would make him look weaker or less MAGA than Trump. At the same time, he has to seem reasonable (i.e. *not* batshit MAGA) enough to persuade Trump-averse conservatives to come home to him.
I'm not sure that math checks out.

Also, and I'll keep banging on the lack of charisma drum. I don't think many folks have actually listened to DeSantis talk more than 5 minutes. I think anyone who has will quickly come to understand he has almost no shot at widespread mainstream appeal. I actually think his over the top fascist policy making is compensation in the hope that policy will overcome this fundamental flaw. It is very close to listening to Ted Cruz speak. He has a substantial negative charisma modifier.

Let's be fair here. I very specifically said that I liked the name Nikki Haley.
How that turns into 'characterizing female politicians as sex workers' is a little excessive.

To be clear, my comment was solely based on the spelling (and a bit the name: Nikki with two ‘k’s’).
Has nothing to do with gender. If the person in question was a male named ‘Ron Geronimo’ I would have made the same comment.

Perhaps, but the conversation was about her name, not the person herself. I think this distinction matters.

But "Nikki" is Haley's legal middle name as it appears on her birth certificate, according to her 2018 tweet.
...
While it's a common nickname for women named "Nichole" in the United States, "Nikki" is also a common Punjabi name, the region in India her parents migrated from.
In a tweet responding to implications she white-washed her name from activist Bree Newsome, Haley said "Nikki" means "little one" in Punjabi.
"Nikki" is often used "as a term of endearment for the youngest girl in a Sikh family," according to British-Indian writer Tunku Varadarajan, who wrote an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal in 2020 about Haley's name controversy. Haley is the youngest girl in her family.

Yeah, if anything getting indicted would be *more* of an incentive to run. It would strengthen his inevitable judicial and political arguments about the impropriety of an administration indicting an opposition candidate for president, plus it gives him the promise of additional immunity if he should win and assume the presidency.

I'm waiting for someone to make a transcript to post here since I heard part of his CPAC speech. It was unbelievably dangerous and unhinged. Based on this and other recent events I dare anyone to argue with a straight face that this nation is not in a failure state.
