2023 is the first semi-reasonable year in some time in which to upgrade one's GPU

Re: 2022 is truly the second-best year to upgrade your GPU
just saw RX 6900 XT cards for under $600 on newegg (if you use the SWIFT payment installment thing) but i think this class of GPU is too long for my case. maybe i CAN wait for 7XXX cards next year.

this would have worked if i wasn't now thinking to ... just wait for the 7XXX series cards. i'm in no rush, really. (and i've waited _this_ long)

Seem like like NVidia, AMD is also having a big problem with their new high end GPU:
But at least, you're probably safe if you're buying boards made by AMD's AIB partners that are using different board design.

If he's right, it's easy to fix by adding more liquid to future units. Much cheaper than completely redesigning it. Doesn't help anyone with a current unit of course.

So if that wasn't a design decision to save money does the manufacturer for AMD have to pay AMD for the loss?

Depends what is actually going on. If one manufacturer has a flaw in their process where a certain number of cards are getting the wrong amount of fluid, it would seem that manufacturer is on the hook for replacing them. Or at least that is how it works in the industry I'm in.

All the bitter gamers waiting for prices on 3 series cards to fall off a cliff and screaming “HOLD!”on all the deal sites are probably going to be sorely disappointed when the drop they are hoping for doesn’t materialize.
In fact, prices are trending back up…looks like the dip was a couple months ago.

I haven’t looked in a couple of weeks, but that has been the trend for most of the more mainstream cards in the past several months sadly.hitbyambulance wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 10:19 pm prices are pretty clearly going up on the 6800XT. forget that, i can hold out longer.

well, a few posts up you had listed a 6800XT card for $555. For $3 more you get 2 AAA games. so I figured that was a better deal. If the games interested you and you paid full price, this would save you $140hitbyambulance wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 10:19 pm prices are pretty clearly going up on the 6800XT. forget that, i can hold out longer.

if need be, i have a larger case that i could swap alll my parts into and use that instead, but i'd rather not unless i really have to.

Those are pretty cards. Ive even worked out imaginary builds using one. Jayztwocents has my perfect looking case and build using one. Im sure by the time I ever get enough money to build a new system together the stuff will change. But it sure is a beautiful build.

Another look at them. This is the last in the series, so you might want to go back if you have a lot of interest in them.

I keep looking, and I still just don't know.
I have this. GeForce RTX 2060 it costs $50 more today than when I purchased it in Oct 2019
And now they are up to the what 6000 series? But am I going to get hundreds of dollars worth of improvement by getting a new card? Every time I start looking into it, I get a cranky stress headache and rage quit.

It's nice to be at the top left for once. I was very skeptical about the 4090 but got an opportunity to grab one around MSRP and hemmed and hawed and then pulled the trigger. The timing was good as we've been seeing a run of the DLSS 3 stuff dropping. It makes a huge difference. Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, and Undying Light 2 with the settings thrown to the max and pulling 80-100 FPS in all these games?! It's impressive but then again the computer is pulling 500-600W under load and lots of dollars in the pot. Hopefully this will run me several years.

I wish. Solar helps here but I haven't had time to experiment with an undervolt or 70 or 80% power target which might shave a 100-150W off without much real impact on frames. I do somewhat laugh at the idea we've gone from a decade plus of regimented OC tinkering into an era where we might be kvetching about power optimization. What a time to live in.Carpet_pissr wrote: ↑Thu Feb 02, 2023 5:17 pm Jesus. Did they give you a rebate for your power bill when you bought that?

I have 3 gaming PCs and the worst them has a slightly higher graphics card than some of you and I *really* want to get that last one upgraded (1660 Super), but honestly nothing has really made it necessary.

For me, it's a combination of CPU, board, and graphics card. I can't really go any higher with what I've got and it's at the point where I'd have to replace everything, but the prices have been high enough to give me pause. I wish it were simpler than that.

I get it, in this context, but considering their past and even current ‘juggernaut’ status, it just seems weird.

The messaging us: previously decent AMD has now joined the evil Nvidia in their battle against the consumer (not really mocking here, that argument can legit be made imo), so if you want to fight the good fight, support fledgling Intel, the David in this battle against Goliath(s)

The weird thing is Intel is looking for anything to help them right now. Despite their gigantic size they are struggling right now story wise with Wall Street. They'd love for this to turn into some price war with people rooting them on.

Yeah, intel's only an underdog in the sense that they've never participated in this market spectrum before, only producing onboard video until very recently. The irony would be if Intel were to go and purchase a previously Nvidia-allied manufacturer, to become their manufacturer and brand.

I’m buying a new system and can get a 3090 put in the desktop for about 700 bucks less than a 4080. Should I pay extra for the 4080, or will the 3090 be good enough for some solid 4K gaming?

If I had the money then the 4080. make sure its the 16gb model.

And thats comparing it to the the ti 3090.The RTX 4080 16GB is 20-90% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti in non ray-traced titles, and 2-3x faster in games with ray-tracing.
