As usual, the upgrade is just the new chapter while the collection includes everything up to and including the new chapter.

I think I bought Blackmore cheap and got it all up to that for like less than $20. Still haven't got back to ESO though yet. Plan to. I do think I tested out a warden and a necro.

Is this game fun solo? I never really tried it and I'm kind of bored as of late.

And where should someone start who has played the base game long ago if they own everything up to and inc Blackmore? And is starting a Warden or Necro ok to use?

Ditto, I've always given this game a pass since it's an MMO and I mostly play solo stuff these days. Also, is there a monthly sub fee?

I've been playing solo. Some content, such as dungeons, require groups but most of the game is accessible to solo players.

All of the classes are viable either for solo or group play.

The game is designed so that you can play the content in whatever order you want, although if you just run around willy-nilly you can end up playing through story arcs out of sequence. There are guides that lay out what order to play through the content, starting with the original main quest, if you want to experience the content in chronological order.

Example: How To Play Elder Scrolls Online In Chronological Order
Spoiler:
  • The Main Quest / The Mages Guild / The Fighters Guild
  • Cadwell's Silver & Gold / Cyrodiil
  • Craglorn
  • Imperial City
  • Orsinium
  • Hew's Bane (Thieves Guild)
  • The Gold Coast (Dark Brotherhood)
  • Dungeon: Shadows Of The Hist
  • The Missing Prophecy / Morrowind
  • Of Knives And Long Shadows / The Clockwork City
  • Through A Veil Darkly / Summerset
  • Ruthless Competition / The Cursed Skull / Murkmire
  • Dungeon: Wrathstone
  • The Demon Weapon / The Halls Of Colossus / Elsweyr
  • Dungeon: Scalebreaker
  • Dragonhold (Southern Elsweyr)
  • Dungeon: Harrowstorm
  • The Coven Conspiracy / The Coven Conundrum / Greymoor
  • The Ravenwatch Inquiry / The Gray Council / Markarth
  • Dungeon: Flames Of Ambition
  • A Mortal's Touch / The Emperor's Secret / Blackwood
  • An Apocalyptic Situation / The Key And The Cataclyst / The Deadlands
  • Dungeon: Coral Eyrie / Shipwright's Grief
  • Ascending Doubt / A King's Retreat / High Isle
  • Dungeon: Earthen Root Enclave / Graven Deep
  • Sojourn Of The Druid King / Firesong (Galen)

There is an optional subscription plan (ESO+) that provides a handful of benefits, the most significant (to me, ymmv) being additional storage inventory space and unlimited storage space for crafting materials.

It's very enjoyable solo. It's nearly a single player MMO.

You get a companion who you can setup to be DPS, tank, or heal. Of course they aren't as potent as a player, but they do help out with harder content.

There is no subscription required, but I find it necessary just for the unlimited crafting bag and double bank space.

The worst thing about the game is also the best thing about the game. The absolutely overwhelming amount of content makes it a challenge for a completionist to really see progress.

I'm generally the opposite in that I never complete anything. I mean I can pretty much try it for free so might as well. I was so bored I started playing Fallout 76 this week. And it's actually kind of fun, but man is it rough around the edges. This looks a lot more polished. By a lot...

Depending on what you want out of the game, I'd argue it might be the best solo MMO. You can spend hundreds of hours doing nothing but self-contained Elder Scrolls stories and never interact with another person if you don't want to. I recently spend about 40 hours just running through the Oblivion (Blackwood) zone and story and had a blast. Never did a dungeon, never joined a group, never did anything but the story and side missions all on my own. It was fantastic.

That said, you'll never get the best shiny gear playing that way. The top tier stuff all requires grouping to do dungeons, dailies, etc. I've run a few ESO dungeons, but never really enjoyed them. In short, if you play it like a single player RPG, you'll probably have fun. If you want all the MMO stuff, then it might not be the best game for you.

I generally just roll a new toon for each done. Ran a Nightblade through Blackwood, and just started a Warden in Elsweyr last night. I find that I typically feel the itch to move to something new after each zone's story, and that's a goo way to do it.

Also, I would argue that ESO's MSQ is the very best Elder Scrolls story in all the games.

Agree with Skinypupy - in some ways I'd say this is the overall best MMORPG for all things considered. You can completely play it as a solo RPG a la other Elder Scrolls game, but there are plenty of typical MMO features if you want to go that route. The general dungeon finder thing is very friendly without any of the "have to have such and such a role" thing (maybe this gets bad later in the later phases of the game but certainly in the earlier phases I didn't have issues). Sadly due to strange timing things over the years, I was never able to play this with any friends except at initial release when the game wasn't really quite ready. I feel like this would be the ideal MMO for a group that had lots of varied interests, but I never experienced it that way.

My personal biggest problem with the game, as others have mentioned, is that there can be too many distractions in terms of content and side quests, not to mention crafting and all the MMO bells and whistles, etc etc. My best experience with the game was one stint where I decided to focus only on whichever expansion's main story I was in, and really force myself to not take side quests or do other content. The story flowed much better this way and I stayed on track, and it was very enjoyable. I really had to make an effort to not allow myself to get distracted, which might seem kind of odd for those that want tons of content. But every other time I played the game, as soon as I started getting diverted from the main story for almost any reason, I soon lost interest.

Structure-wise, there’s the Main Story quest that continues throughout, a main story in each zone, then 7-8 different locations you’ll find throughout the zone that offer another minor side quest of their own. Lots of map markers, but if you keep that general structure in mind it cuts down on some of the confusion. There are also a bunch of quest markers in the main cities that unlock other different aspects (crafting writs, dailies, guild quests, etc)

Probably my least favorite thing about the game is th incredibly stupid market system. There’s not a general market board or auction house. Instead, you have to find a “trading guild” and only sell to people in that guild. You can belong to multiple trading guilds, but many of them have minimum weekly requirements you have to meet. It’s really obnoxious. There’s mods that help the process on PC, but console players like me are mostly out of luck. I don’t even bother with it.

I loved Morrowind so much and was so disappointed by Oblivion originally. I finished MW and all its DLCs and some mods. Fun days.

hhmmmm oh wow! I dont know if its me thats changed or the game has evolved or both. But this time it just clicked with me. It fell into place. This is a very well written and deep full rpg mmo experience. Wow. Im blown away. I used to think of it as the go there do this take that kill those bring me this sorta of actiony mmo. And Ive had this game years and years and delved back into it many many times..

But this time my eyes have been opened. Im doing detailed thoughtful quests with narrative and its voiced. WTH is this. Why did I not see this before.?? I can LIVE in this game. I can be my dark elf necro girl and travel around the entire world just playing myself in the world of Elder Scrolls.

OMG. This is fantastic!

And Im not even crafting or stealing stuff! And if I do have to do some shady business I pay my fine to the guards and continue on as if I really am a living citizen of the game world. I love it!

That's awesome, Daehawk. I got hooked when I played it, too. I have a nasty case of altoholism, though, and I have about a dozen different toons on the server. Bought a few of the DLC's and made some specialist characters, but my favorite by far was my Argonian Dark Brotherhood assassin. I went all in and just ran assassination quests. I loved the stealth aspect of the missions, and tried to become a wraith, getting in, making my kill, and getting out without being seen.

I haven't played in over a year, though. Might go back in one day, but with Diablo 4, Starfield, and Baldurg's Gate 3 coming out, it might be a while.

I play a little ESO pretty much every day, but most days it's just a matter of logging in to do some dailies. There's a metric ton of actual content that I still haven't touched.

I have a full rooster of alts. I always love making new ones. But this time Im sticking with my dark elf necro at least until I finish Morrowind and its area. Then I dont think Ill ever touch my other guys. I think I will make some kinda warden since Ive never played them. Maybe a Breton and start in Summerset since its new to me as well. That is IF it lets me pick a starting area after the tutorial area like my dark elf let me. I started somewhere and did those few quest and it opened a portal room which let me choose anywhere to go start my adventure. I loved that. I picked Morrowind as its my favorite area and favorite of the games. I think I might try a assassin in the warden which would be totally strange..a big guy wit ha bear killing people stealthily lol. Shall see on him. Got planty of time.

This is actually a problem for me as a completionist. There is way too much content and with everything auto-leveled there isn't really any direction on how you progress so I just wander doing random quests that may or may not have some story to them and then get bored because I am doing random stuff.

The game is really good, if only it was more.... cohesive.

That's what actually made me stop doing mainline quests. I did a series where a the quest giver revealed a traitor, then I went to another zone and ran into said traitor and had the option to take a quest from him. So I went back to the Dark Brotherhood and started doing dailies and assassination quests.

hehehe last night I got stuck in a circle dungeon for 2 hours. I was headed some place for Lord Vivec and came upon a random quest along my road to that. I always do these as it lvls me up and is a fun story off to the side for a break on the main line quests. Anyways I went into a dungeon and somehow got lost as it was a world within the world..huge..not a caverns but with more dungeons and instances in it.

I circled that damn place repeating the same 3 steps multiple times even with other players in there too and the game crashing over and over. It got to be like a dream lol. I finally tired of it all after the 4th of so run through it as when I got out and saw the door again to go back in I passed on by saying fuck it Ill skip that quest. Lol.

I still dont know what quest I missed by not going back in there for another damn run. I was like a hamster in a wheel hahaha. I was so glad to be out of there. But I did get good loots and lvld up. I was blaming my repeat runs on the crashes. I think it was messing up the quest line as I was playing it and setting me back to the beginning and I was too buzzed to notice lol. Im stronger for it though.

As an aside I think I bought the Blackwood Collection that got me started back into all this. So I own anything Blackwood release on back and can do all that. Its how I was able to start a Necro and can make a alt Warden I believe.

I went ahead and created my Breton warden alt. I didn't want to get burned out on my Dark elf necro.

I logged out in the gallery after doing that little start area because Im not sure where to go in the portals. My plan had been to go straight to summerset like I went to Vardenfell with my new necro.

But online Im seeing two other suggestion to start out in and reasoned.

1. Glenumbra - Because its full of Breton lore and is small. Supposedly good for a Breton. Looks nice too.

2. Stros M’Kai - again its small and good for Bretons.

3. Summerset. Because I always wanted to go there. Im thinking it would be the same as Vardenfell as a good start. I mean everything is lvl adjusted so wont be like Id die instantly. But would I miss much starting here?

And if I did go to one of the other places first..once done could I go to Summerset directly or am I stuck going to the next one from the old game world in some order? Like could I do one then go throug ha portal to Summerset? Or should I just go straight to Summerset since thats where I really want to go.

And lastly..I cant now decide what to be as a warden..tank or dps...weapons or magic. I always figured Id do magic with the necro and melee on the warden with my pet. Maybe even stealth and be a thieves guild and dark brotherhood member.....just not sure I can afford that route always paying a guard off that stops me. Bad enough as a necro. I once accidentally unleashed a major spell or something in town and finally died after killed some guards..that fine was hefty lol.

I couldn't wait for replies so I just did what I wanted and portaled to Summerset to start there.

I am at a loss of what guild or guilds to join and when now. Should I join guilds when I start or wait a while. And what guilds fit in best with a dark elf necro and a breton warden?

Im considering fighters and thieve and maybe dark brotherhood for the warden.

And mage and something for necro...maybe mage and dark brotherhood or something.

I sure wish I had a pet with each class...its why I made these classes...but bear and skeleton mage are still many many lvls away.

Nothing straight forward with this game, I logged after a year away on my lvl 19 and I am clueless , where to go next and what zones. I know they all level to you but it would be nice to have more of a pointer. Not sure where I am going

The simplest way to get your bearings is to follow the main quest in your journal. That will lead you through the original story and will update as you go along. Aside from that, you can refer to a guide to play the various expansions and optional content in chronological order.

I still cant decide on my warden's weapon or armor set. Im using a 2 hander for now as my necro doesn't so its different. But a wep and a shield looks fun too. Also my armor Im going with heavy since Im not a caster warden in much sense of the word so far. But under the armor tab for skills the main default area shows I should be wearing light armor because it is the default for a skill point...I can add heavy though now. But I am not sure to put puts into anything so Ivbe not added points to my armor area or weapons. I guess I should buckle down and just pick heavy and then decide wep later. I guess sticking with 1 wep all the time would be best but its also repetitive.

I find it strange and a little amusing that I ma dark elf in Vardenfell with all the other dark elves yet they continue to call me outworlder. You'd think as Im one of them that wouldn't happen here.

Also Im very disappointed a necro gets no permanent minion such as a skeleton or some sort. Its why I made a necro to begin with. I knew the warden got a bear and thought surely a necro would get a pet. Sad.

It was the same way in Morrowind. You're not from the homeland, therefor you're an outsider. It's about your culture, not your race.

Im pretty done with Vvardenfell I think. Not sure. I finished the Vivic line and most of the island. Im doing a few Telvanni quests and I still have to find a way to find that one guy's sister. Man I was trapped in an endless loop of running that dungeon maze for hours last time trying to find a way into that place Im supposed to go lol.

Also both characters are wearing a miss mash of armors. The necro does have 3 pieces of the warrior poet set on. Not seen the other two pieces. Thats kinda why I dont think Im done here.

Question. I usually pay off my bad rep and get put back to upstanding. This time though I kept getting run out of an area in a telvani house so I gave up and killed them all in that area, got my item and left. Usually this is when I approach a guard , get stopped, and I pay them off. This time though the guards were red and attacked on sight. i couldn't pay my rep off so I simply let them killed me. I revived right there and the guards were white to me again but none talk to me to pay them off. Is my rep ok now since I died? Im not sure how to see my rep.

EDIT: Ok bounty is 0. So guess Im clear just by dying lol.
