Re: What are you listening to right now?
Kardashev's Liminal Rite album kept showing up on nearly every year end "Best Metal of 2022" list over the past couple weeks. It had slipped under my radar, but I finally got around to spinning it a few times this morning. it's really, really good.
Digging into them a little further gave me this. The performance here, especially the vocals, gave me chills. I found it to be incredibly powerful.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Well, this is insane.
Black Midi is a truly bizarre mish-mash of nearly every possible genre. It would be perfectly at home on a 90's Mr. Bungle album, and this video is well...just watch for yourself.

Not sure where I dug up Arcturus. Really great avant-garde progressive metal. Some songs like Angst incorporate symphonic black metal, but others like Warp are more subdued with clean vocals. I adore the falsetto.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I'm doing a 10x10 "Classic Rock Challenge" in which I picked 10 classic rock bands and 10 of their albums to listen to. I tried to steer towards bands that I wasn't super familiar with their entire catalog.
Then I use a random number generator to pick which album to listen to next.
I figured it would be a fun way to:
A) Become more familiar with bands I know, but don't know much about outside their greatest hits
B) Become more familiar with bands I really haven't listened to much at all
Then I use a random number generator to pick which album to listen to next.

Some new nautical-themed funeral doom nonsense from the fine lads in Ahab. Last album was about Moby Dick, and this new album is taking on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

Ooh, thanks for introducing me to Boy Harsher. I gave "Give Me a Reason" and "Pain" a listen, and that led to YT recommending me Lebanon Hanover, another group I hadn't heard of though this song sounds familiar. I love it!

That was a 'damn good' music video??
I guess I don't know what it takes to be a good music video because that one seemed pretty low-effort to me. Her walking. Her stretching. Her lip-synching. She does look nice stretching half naked though.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
So it seems Thomas Winkler, formerly of Gloryhammer, has a new band consisting of current/former members of Orden Ogan, Frozen Crown, and Rhapsody of Fire. At first listen, I don't like the single as much as Gloryhammer's third album (which I think showed a lot of growth). It's a bit generic and cheesy as hell (as you'd expect), but it's definitely catchy and it's great to hear Winkler's voice again. (It's already growing on me.) The song and the band itself, "Angus McSix," seems to be a huge jab at and gleeful knockoff of his former band and bandmates (as well as Masters of the Universe I guess) and it's hilarious. The opening includes the lyric, "Glory left my hammer, but now I wield a sword".
While much about his acrimonious split from Gloryhammer is still unknown or couched in rumour, you have to hope he was as near to the "good guy" as possible in the mire of his ex-bandmates' deplorable behaviour.

from 1986 (never seen the film, but it's free on Youtube, so i might ...) - still the only side-project ever from a U2 member. the title track "Heroine" has vocals from a very young, pre _The Lion and the Cobra_ Sinead O'Connor

I can't listen to Gloryhammer anymore because they're such racist douchenozzles, but I love hearing Winkler's voice again. That was actually a really catchy tune, and I definitely want to hear more.Sudy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 3:51 pm So it seems Thomas Winkler, formerly of Gloryhammer, has a new band consisting of current/former members of Orden Ogan, Frozen Crown, and Rhapsody of Fire. One of my biggest "guilty pleasure" bands is releasing a new album today, Twilight Force. They are the absolute cheesiest of cheesy fantasy-themed power metal, but I absolutely love them. We're talking "block of cheese, covered with cheese sauce, with melted cheese sprinkled on top, and covered with cheese whiz...all on a plate that is made of cheese" levels of cheesiness here. That said, the musicianship is solid and the songs are catchy and fun as hell, even if they are about sparkly dragons, fairy forests, and saving Twilight Kingdoms.
I especially love the Caribbean steel drum breakdown about 3:15 into this one.

This was my first thought as well. I'm not much of an Elvis fan to begin with (hadn't ever heard most of those songs), but it sounded like Glen was really struggling with most of them.hitbyambulance wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 12:44 am too bad he waited this long to do such a project, tho. his voice isn't quiiite what it used to be. nice versions of "Always on my Mind" and "Loving Arms" tho

This new Metallica is just...sad. Cookie cutter corporate rock.
Not that really I expected anything different at this point, but I'm not sure they could possibly be any blander if they tried.
