[Movie] Tenet
Is anyone else excited about this new Christopher Nolan film? It's coming out September 3 in theaters that are open.
I would pay top dollar to download this.

This is the first movie in forever that I am avoiding anything related to the story so I can go in totally cold. Unfortunately that will probably mean I have to wait until it streams, and that could be a long time.

Not going to a theater in the foreseeable future. Ask again next year.

Re: [Movie] Tenet
I've seen the extended trailer they showed in the theaters way back when, but otherwise I'm doing the same including waiting for streaming, which stinks. I really wanted to see it in IMAX.

Yeah, one thing I really miss is going to movies. I'm not going anywhere until there is a vaccine and now with Trump pushing for early release, I have my doubts about that

I'm surprised by how much I miss it. I'm pretty good with everything else that being a shut-in entails, but this was supposed to be an epically good summer for movies. I'm still hoping they continue to push the bigger ones out but am beginning to realize there are a bunch that I'm going to miss out on the theater experience.

Re: [Movie] Tenet
I'm going to see this Sunday in IMAX.
No one else has currently bought seats in the auditorium at the show time I'm going to. I'm sure this won't change but I'm not expecting a large crowd in the theatre.

Re: [Movie] Tenet
Just saw this. Here are my initial thoughts (non spoiler):
1. Nolan doing what he does best. I'm convinced he starts a film with a simple premise: I want to put something mind-meltingly cool on the screen even if it doesn't seem possible. Now I just need to write all the stuff that leads up to it. It's a very, very cool and thrilling film.
2. A lot of people have complained about inaudible dialogue. Not a problem for me. I missed maybe 3 or 4 lines, which is about average.
3. When I've seen it another 3 or 4 times I might be able to explain to someone what the hell it was all about.
Not to be missed, in my opinion. And obviously, see it on the big screen if you can/dare.

I'm intrigued, but the only movie that'll get me into a theater this year will be DUNE in December, and that's only if there's some hope that the virus is coming under control where I am.

I got the DVD for Christmas and watched it yesterday. If you watch unfold in a straight line and don't worry about the paradoxes it is quite enjoyable. There was one twist I liked:

Re: [Movie] Tenet
I tried watching it, the opening was incomprehensible to me. I was seeing things that I thought were meant to be significant in some way but I had no idea what parts of what I'm seeing mean anything and if they do mean something what do they mean? Usually with Nolan's movies I can understand what I'm seeing even though I have no context for what's going on. In the beginning of Tenet, in the theater, one character does something near another character. I couldn't tell what was done or whether it was a positive or negative thing. I imagine that later in the movie that will all be clear but the way it was filmed and edited didn't intrigue me. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mind set for it. I'll try again another time.

One thing I found amusing was that the concept of "Tenet" was only mentioned a couple times. It reminded me of the first rule of Fight Club.

Jaymann, that wasn't a mistake.
Spoiler:
Anyone who says they understood the whole thing after one viewing is a liar. You need to watch it at least twice to comprehend everything. And yes, I think I know which part of the opera scene you mean, and there's absolutely no way to know exactly what it was about on your first viewing.gameoverman wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 5:34 pm I tried watching it, the opening was incomprehensible to me. Re: [Movie] Tenet
I just watched this last night. I'm pretty sure it was the second installment of a trilogy. If so, it has the potential to be very cool. If it ends up being a one off, it was just OK. I was expecting more stunts. I didn't have the "why" of it all, but I did get the all the hidden identities as they occurred with the exception of who Neil saw in Freeport (and should have gotten that one, but didn't quite have the rules down yet). My wife was utterly lost, but she also dozed in and out which added to the degree of difficulty.

Re: [Movie] Tenet
Stream-rented it a couple months ago. I liked it a lot, but knew I'd have to watch it again to start to understand everything. But I don't have the patience for that. I said the same thing about Inception... my mother-in-law gave me a copy for Christmas ten years ago, after seeing it in the theatre. I still haven't watched it a second time.
I love Nolan. I know he's more Hollywood than auteur, but he's some damn fine Hollywood. I do think his work is getting overly complicated and he was at his best with the more "simple" Memento, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight. But all his films resonate with me emotionally. They're the best kind of sensory-emotional porn, and he does an amazing job of elevating actors I previously found largely unappealing (e.g. DiCaprio, McConaughey), as well as utilizing ones I already loved (Bale).
I'd list Robert Pattinson in the former category, but the reality is I've already realized over the past couple years what an outstanding actor he actually is (e.g. The Rover, The Lost City of Z, High Life, The Lighthouse, Good Time), despite getting his start in franchises I don't care for. I wasn't familiar with John David Washington or his lineage until after the film, but he delivered a subdued yet intense performance.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

I watched this over the weekend and I really didn't enjoy it. It was overly obtuse (even by Nolan'd standards). I had no clue what was happening throughout most of the movie and saying that you have to watch it twice to understand it just doesn't make it any better for me. I was glad when it was over.

Re: [Movie] Tenet
I liked the depth of the premise. I don't mind being perplexed if the experience is still enjoyable and I'm in the mood for something that will make me think. You could say similar about Memento, Inception, and Interstellar. The Prestige to a lesser degree. A second watching wasn't mandatory, but it was definitely rewarded.
I think Tenet's problem was the sometimes unclear rules and general lack of a frame of reference. Maybe not self indulgent, but definitely trying too hard to surpass expectations. It feels like a spiritual successor to Inception to me, and the classic kind of sequel that overdoes it on the mechanics while losing part of the soul.

Yes, and this is also my problem with most 'hard' sci-fi novels where more time is spent on the science and the characters are just there to keep talking about the science.

I'd have to agree with that characterization completely. I waited a long time to watch this movie when I felt fully awake so as to not succomb to richarditis(TM) - unfortunately I still fell asleep after about an hour's worth. At some point I felt like the "layers" of plot were just too much for my poor brain to handle so it simply shut down, and I have to wonder were they really necessary? I loved the core concept, but by the time he was looking for a fake(?) painting or painter or really I don't know what, I had no idea why or what I was watching any more. My partner was smart enough to read a wikipedia while we were watching to help follow along better. I mean, we aren't necessarily the smartest people in the world, but we both have PhDs so if we are having trouble following the convoluted plotlines I'm assuming it wasn't just us... The frustrating thing for me is I felt like at least some of the added complexities were really unnecessary, but I suppose I should watch it a second time to see if I feel the same way.Sudy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 6:09 am I think Tenet's problem was the sometimes unclear rules and general lack of a frame of reference. Re: [Movie] Tenet
just got the DVD from the library. turned subtitles on for the whole film, which i honestly never had to do before. but i usually have trouble with film dialog - it feels like a lot of films are mixed and targeted for 5.1/7.1 surround and the mixed-down 'center' stage for dialog just doesn't work right in stereo.
i do like the idea alluded to above that this is actually part of a series and it's being released completely 'out of order'
ok, i read a summary on imdb and i think i missed about 30% of the plot (which would be mostly revealed on a second viewing - i now believe this was intended):
another example of editorial sloppiness... it did feel like this part was just forgotten about.
