Garth Brooks to come out of retirement

Post by Isgrimnur »

Reuters
Garth Brooks, the best-selling solo musician in U.S. history, said on Thursday he was coming out of retirement and was expected to announce an extended concert run at the Wynn Las Vegas casino and hotel.
...
Brooks, 47, hired a private plane to transport reporters to an unnamed site where he will announce his immediate plans.

The destination was widely tipped on websites and in newspaper gossip columns to be Las Vegas and Steve Wynn's casino hotel. Brooks was expected to announce a four-month run of two to three shows a week.
Assuming he's still got it, I'll be on board. Heck, he's the only real holdover from my HS-era country run and lives in the dustier reaces of my iPhone. The other artists didn't make the cut.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

I didn't know country singers, or any singers for that matter, went into official retirement. Don't they just stop putting out albums and touring?

He's just trying to be like Favre, another be-Wranglered faux-country icon.

I'm completely and utterly unimpressed. This post should be the biggest impact of his decision on my life. Come to think of it I kind of regret making this post and yet here we still are.

Tip of the hat to him.
I spent 90% of the money I made on women, booze, and drugs. The other 10% I just pissed away.

A friend of mine who saw Garth in concert in his prime said it was without question the best concert he had ever been to, in any genre, bar none.

This sounds like great news to me, as I'd love to see him perform.

I did always wonder what was taking him so long to make a comeback - a tour would be like printing money.

Brooks officially retired in 2001, saying he would devote himself to his three daughters at his home in Oswasso, Oklahoma, until his youngest turned 18. She is 13 now.

I saw him a few years ago at a PetSmart in Tulsa buying a hamster. Dunno what relevance that has, but there ya go.

Didn't he already come out of retirement to support breast cancer (research for a cure) last year or the year before? I thought he toured and reissued a bunch of albums in pink or some such thing.

Here we go.

The author's idea of being retired and my idea are two different things.

I don't think I'm capable of understanding modern popular country music. Something in country radio from the Eagles forward is just intolerable for me. I just have a disconnect going on but for those that do, have at it.

OTOH I was watching Austin City Limits schtick on Bluegrass a few weeks ago and artists like Emmylou Harris still blow me away. If the kind of music I saw on ACL gets any country radio play I'd be shocked.

If you like bluegrass, you need to look at The Greencards. They had Sarah Jarosz open or them when I was them in Dallas earlier this year.

As for Garth, I've heard that he's mainly done sporadic benefit concerts and stuff over the last eight years, but nothing that would be considered an active artist, no huge tours, etc.

I'd like to say I'm into bluegrass as there is so much bluegrass I love though I am ignorant of the genre and as an example from ACL bluegrass special, I fastforwarded through a lot of it and some of the more popular artists alike Alison Krauss did nothing for me. I'm picky. I loved the music from O Brother Where Art Thou. I love what I've heard from Bela Fleck. I love what you can do with large bands, banjos, steel guitars, etc...

Garth Brooks kind of reminds me of a younger Karl Rove in a cowboy hat. Can't say why.

Spinal Tap came out of retirement this year too. Now you know the answer to the trivia question, "What does Harry Shearer and Garth Brooks have in common?"

I grew up with my parents listening to Garth Brooks. I rebelled against country at a fairly young age and haven't really looked back. However, it would be pretty awesome to see him in concert. His shows were supposed to be some of the best out there. Don't think my parents ever got to see him in person, but we had at least one VHS tape of one of his concerts.

I imagine it will be pretty expensive.

Maybe he can team up with Barbara Streisand and between them they'll make all the money in the world.

Check out The Duhks. Not their recent album but their two previous albums. Excellent stuff that you might be surprised about.

You sure the announcement didn't say he was coming out of the closet?

I saw Garth in concert at his peak, and it was a phenomenal show. I've liked the majority of his work, too, so I'm happy for him.
