Check out a website for me?

Post by Blackhawk »

So, as part of the Learning How to Learn class, I've started up a web page. Or blog. Or gallery. Or journal. I honestly have no idea what it is right now. My vague plan is to use it as a sort of personal log as I learn this and that, and a place to share what I'm working on with friends and family. I do not expect to have any readers, nor do I expect to ever make money from it.

However, I still wouldn't mind if someone would eyeball it for me and give me aesthetic/technical feedback. Fair warning: my knowledge of web design consists of having browsed the web, and the only html I know is how to put something in italics. The only css I know is what c-s-and-s stand for.

The images and content are still placeholders I'm using while I figure out how to make everything work.

Fonts are a little small for me. I have to magnify the page.

Awesome, thanks. I was actually wondering about that - I bumped them up a little. Any better?

Text is fine for me now. Lay out is clean, nothing unpleasant about it. Key will be as posts are added if it flows logically.

Yeah, that's why I have a few placeholder posts in place for now. I'm having a hell of a time getting it organized the way I want. I'd love if they were staggered a bit.

Nice clean site (although I've only visited on PC, not mobile).

Makes me want to revisit my long-neglected Wordpress blog and give it a redesign.

Nice layout. I prefer a darker font like the headline Who I Am and How I Got Here for easier reading.

Extra credit for the 'stache.

Thanks for noticing. I put a lot of time* into the palette, and made sure that all the color combos fit all of the standards for contrast.

And then left that particular color at 'default.'

The headline and text were actually supposed to be the same color. See if it's a little better now.

*Mostly research and comparing existing palettes. I looked at several hundred well-regarded options before finding one that spoke to me and wasn't annoying. I then tweaked it just a tiny bit, but it isn't entirely original.

I'm getting an error when I try to leave a comment and authenticate with a Google account:

I have no idea if this is your problem or Googles. :/

I also don't know. The toggle is "Allow Comments." I designed a web! I did find a reference to a similar issue that was related to one fairly important plugin. I disabled it for a little while - does it work now?

Yep! Of course, the "Use Google" button is gone for authentication, so I don't know if it's fixed or just not triggering.

Looks good to me on both desktop and mobile. It's simple without being basic. Stylish without being ostentatious.

Could do with one of these though:

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Thanks for all the feedback.

I actually just yanked the placeholder posts since I have a couple of real ones in place now.

/edit - I reenabled the problem plugin (Jetpack.) It's a core functionality plugin responsible for some of the security features. I think. :? Anyway, I was able to post via google, so hopefully things are working now.
