Movies you think you should seriously watch again

Just poking fun. I was raised on old musicals and dramas as much as I was action and sci-fi. I discovered most violent films (beyond PG-13) on my own as an older teen. While I don't know that film in general will give you a balanced perspective of the world, it's definitely important to be exposed to a variety of genres and subjects if you don't want to put little meatheads out into society.

I don't mind a good romantic comedy, but can't tolerate the sap and unrealistic expectations that many foster. My folks love My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but it was always a bit much for me. I'm generally too serious for mainstream comedies.

When "look forward to watching the classics with my teenage son" was mentioned, my first thought was porn. Porn is generally non-violent, and romantic in a pay-as-you-go sort of way.

One movie that I would like to see again but is not available on any streaming service is the original, 1972 version of Slueth with Michael Caine and Lawrence Olivier.

I don't believe it was ever released on Blu-Ray.

According to What Culture's recent video, it turns out the movie's rights belong to, of all things, Bristol Meyers Squibb where it, and other movies, languish.

It sucks when rights to something become property of companies not in the business of that thing. When I first got involved in gaming journalism with The Wargamer, it was because me and a few others put up a scenario archive for a series of games based on the Great Battles board games. The developer, Erudite, was acquired by a corporate software developer (Keane) who had no intention on doing anything with gaming code they now owned. Shrapnel Games was willing to pay $10K to get the rights, and I found some contacts at Keane that might have directly benefited, had they the slightest inclination to help. Best answer I got was "yeah, we own it, we don't know where it is though."

I just rewatched Kubrick's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. What an amazing film!

I'd seen it just once thirty years ago, and I surprised to realize this time that the ultraviolence & droogs & street-fighting portion is really just the first third of the movie. The big themes of free will and moral choice don't even arise until later.

This is one that I should really rewatch. I saw it during college about 22 years ago and thought it was great at the time (when I was also studying a bit of philosophy to go along with my biochemistry major), but I have a feeling that a few more years of life experience might change my perspective a bit.

Read it too. The book and movie come across totally different but they are both fantastic. I don't think the movie really drives home that Alex is 14 and his mischief was really flat out dehumanizing criminal thuggery, to say nothing of Kubrik leaving out the end of the novel.

More than any other film/book combo, I recommend Clockwork Orange and One Flew Over the Cuckcoo's Nest for the exact same reason. For how totally different the narratives are but for how amazing each work stands on its own.

The book is harsh. (The gang's rape victims are pointed out to be 10 years old, for instance.) It's also written half in the weird Russo-Cockney slang that Burgess invented and that you hear only snippets of in the movie. It's a serious experience.

He was absurdly perfect for the role. He was 27 at the time, but his face was the most arrogant-sly-adolescent imaginable.

Whenever I see him or his name I always think of that movie. It was not a movie I enjoyed but it was memorable.

Enjoyment was not what A Clockwork Orange was after. If it disturbed you and made you evaluate your beliefs, mission accomplished.

I'm happy to report that Master and Commander is just as darn near perfect as it was the first time I saw it. I love this movie.

It's just sad it didn't get the same treatment as the Hornblower series or the Sharpe series of novels with a protracted run. He completed 20 books in the series and the movie didn't even confine itself to just one.

Recently I've been thinking about re-watching Hot Fuzz. I did really like Shaun of the Dead, but Hot Fuzz is my favorite of the three.

I last watched Master and Commander almost exactly ten years ago, just before we were set to spend a couple of weeks in California, including a tour of the HMS Surprise, the sailing training vessel they used for the ship in the film. The rest of the family hadn't seen the film, which would have taken some of the cool factor away from visiting the ship.

Obviously not. I suppose it's fine that if they do just Master and Commander and then maybe do the additional books as discrete movies. I would not want to see a remake of the mishmash that was the Russell Crowe movie (Master and Commander and Far Side of the World were two different novels), the latter pretty well into the series).

BTW, when the Russell Crowe movie was announced, I happened to be in the USS Constitution museum shop. I suppose it's cool that the store employed people really geeked on the subject, they had a collective orgasm upon that announcement.

This year my 17yo has been volunteering every weekend at a project to restore and recondition a 19th-century tall ship, the Gazela. Everybody involved was pretty geeked to learn of a new O'Brian movie.

My virtual DVR "recorded" The Eagle Has Landed because I felt like I might like to see it again, it being probably 30 years since I last did, and it turns out that Wife has never seen it. So that one's high on my "watch again" list now.

That is awesome! I am not familiar with that ship, but still, that's a wonderful thing.

IMO, the best Age of Sail stuff out there is the Hornblower series. There's also an older movie with Alec Guinness that was superb. And I'm talking about movies based on naval engagement, the various Munity on the Bounty and Moby Dick movies need not apply.

I really enjoyed Gattaca...I had no idea about the story and this was early Internet days.

As a pretty average man, this movie resonated with me. I still watch it every few years. Hell, even now, as a single man at 50 who 'tries' every so often with online dating, I feel like my genetic code isn't desirable.

Similar roguish character. In this one, he's an Irishman working with the Nazis, mostly because he hates the English. He infiltrates England as a marsh warden as part of a plot to kidnap Churchill. He's smarter and more calculating than Oddball, though he hides it under a bumpkin personality. His accent comes and goes but isn't too bad when he remembers to do it (which is true of most of the cast).

It's not a great movie, but it's a rare one told from the German perspective -- or rather, an English/American take on the German perspective. My main gripe is that the 2.5 hour runtime is overlong.

Saw both of those in the theater during their initial run. I likely wasn't sober for either.

And The Warrior and the Sorceress with David Carradine.

I really liked David Carradine, met him at GenCon once and somewhere have a picture of my then-young nephews with him. Carradine was totally hungover, but he did a good job engaging the kids. This was a year or two before he died engaged in some weird Thai sex thing.
