1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Post by Exodor »

This Christmas I received a copy of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

I'm going to take the opportunity to expose myself to a some music that I wouldn't otherwise hear. I'm going to use this thread to record my thoughts. With 1001 albums this is going to be a very (very!) long-term project. Feel free to comment on the albums or to just ignore this thread completely.

They're listed in chronological order so we start in the 50s:

First up - Frank Sinatra In the Wee Small Hours
Image

Apparently this was one of the first 12-inch releases and helped popularize the format. Wiki describes it as a concept album about lost love and loneliness. I've never big a big Sinatra fan - he's got a great voice but most of his material is so stuck in a certain time that it's hard for me to enjoy it. I have the same problem here - any message seems to be drowned in a schmaltzy orchestral backing. My enthusiasm to hear "Sinatra's best" quickly petered out and I only made it through by drinking some scotch and pretending to be stuck in an episode of "Mad Men." I'm glad to put this one behind me.

(On a side note - holy moly are there a lot of commercials with a free Spotify account! I haven't used the service in a few years and they've really ramped up the number of ads.)

Are you sure it's not "You Must Die After You Hear These 1001 Albums" ?

Frank Sinatra wrote some good drinking songs. I like him in small doses and in the right context, such as a bar.

Here's a list although they're not quite in the order they are in the book. That list also has more than 1001 albums - the book came out in 2005 so it seems they added a few more recent releases. I'll listen to those too - in 2025 or so when I work my way through this book.

It picks up pretty quickly. I had to push through the Sinatra though - good thing I only started drinking halfway through or I might have fallen asleep.

Yeah I think one or two songs at a time is fine. An entire 40 minute album was a LOT.

Next up - Elvis Presley - 1956
Image

It's hard with some of the early albums to listen with fresh ears. I've never sat down and listend to this album but some songs like "Blue Suede Shoes" are just so iconic that I've heard them many times already. This is Elvis' first album and the first "rock'n'roll" album to hit the top of the charts. Listening to it I'm more surprised at how many tracks strike me as more country or blues than rock'n'roll ("I'm Counting on You","I Love You Because") - it seems that's because in the rush to get an album out they used previously recorded sessions that were more country-oriented than his r'n'r stuff. For me this is a much more enjoyable listen then the Frank Sinatra album. I would never sit down to listen to an Elvis album but I'm a fan of early rock'n'roll and rockabilly so I can dig most of these tracks.

And who doesn't love "Tutti Frutti"! It's two minutes of pure energy.

Actually 1,047 but who's counting. I have heard 136 (I only counted where I have heard the full album), and almost nothing after 1/2 way down. No Ry Cooder and no Roy Buchanan is a travesty. And why would they pick Unplugged for Nirvana?

Re: 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Post by hitbyambulance »

i'm gonna come back to this list as long as this thread is active and nitpick..
Talk Talk – The Colour Of Spring (1987)
undeniably great, but ... no Spirit of Eden or Laughing Stock??
The Young Gods – L’Eau Rouge (1989)
i can't believe this made it. one of my all-time favorite albums.
Portishead – Third (2008)
this got a lot of (undeserved) hate at the time, so ...bold choice, i guess, for the list maker to include it.

funny thing is some of the later list selections are _really_ 'of their time' and so idiosyncratic only a real music nerd (or someone following all the music press for years, or working in say, college radio at the time) would remember them. i wouldn't be surprised to find out the list-compiler is around my age.

From the beginning of the list through 1965, I could only identify six albums that I'm sure I played all the way through. I had lots of hits from 1966-1980(ish), and by the 1990s I was back to nearly nothing.

Ugh, I love the first two albums but I'm part of the mob that hates "Third". I guess I'll be giving it another shot.

I came up with nine. Most were from the late 80s through the early 90s, with a small group in the 70s thanks to Black Sabbath. The truth is that other than just a few years, I've never listened to albums. Before that I listened to the radio, and after that I streamed. I'd be willing to bet I've heard and/or would recognize something off of all of them, but 'album' has rarely been the way I've listened to music.

? It's probably the best NIN album. Pretty Hate Machine has some remnants of Trent's cringy 80s synth-pop experiments and everything after just seems kind of derivative.

Sinatra is one of my favorites. I'm not always in the mood for that kind of music, but when I am I can listen to him for hours.

For the record going into this project I've heard 159 of the albums. That's more than I expected but still leaves a lot of room for new discoveries.

Even if some of them, like the Louvin Brothers, I really, really hate. Speaking of which...

The Louvin Brothers - Tragic Songs of Life - 1956
Image

Country music conjures a lot of mixed feelings for me. I grew up outside of Kansas City so I was surrounded by country music - most of it the terrible "new country" stuff that's now mostly forgotten. Most country music conjures memories of red-necks driving big trucks with confederate flag decals on their rear window and only serves to remind me why I no longer live in the midwest but there's a little nostalgia in there too. I can remember hearing country music at BBQ joints or in friends cars and sometimes hearing it brings me back to my youth.

I can appreciate some old-school country like Johnny Cash - I can't really get into this kind of country, though.

This album presented a challenge. It's not on Spotify and my usual means of finding music came up empty. I settled for listening to the tracks I could find. I think it's safe to say I wouldn't enjoy the full album any more than I enjoyed the songs I could find. It's old-timey country with crooning vocals and twangy guitars.

Hard pass.

So far only one of the three albums I've heard are anything I would try again voluntarily - and even then it's only certain tracks from the Elvis album. I have high hopes things will pick up as we move into the 60's.

I hope.

Throbbing Gristle – DOA: Third And Final Report (1978)
HAAAAAAMBURRRGERRRRR LAAAAAAADYYYYYYYYYYY

i will say that 40+ years on, Genesis P.Orridge just comes off as an insufferable twat from around this time. which i guess is the point.

Holger Czukay – Movies (1979)
somehow i have two copies of this (different pressings tho.. one has bonus tracks) but... only one CAN album in the list?? and The Fall get three?

And that does it up until 2010......man......it's like music dies for me since 2003. Of course, alot of bands I like didnt make the list, Kings X being one of them, and alot of the artists from this list continue to make music I enjoy.

And if I die without ever hearing a Kanye record, I consider that a win.......

David Bowie – Hunky Dory (1972)
David Bowie – The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)
David Bowie – Aladdin Sane (1973)
David Bowie – Young Americans (1975)
David Bowie – Station To Station (1976)
David Bowie – Low (1977)
David Bowie – "Heroes" (1977)
personally my own opinion, but i'd for sure swap out Young Americans with Scary Monsters - waaaaay better album. i'd also include Lodger, but that's a take it or leave it decision (would also include Outside and, if the list went into the 2010s, Blackstar)

I suspect that it tracks age and technology. My interest in music peaked when I was in my mid-teens through mid-20s. Once I graduated from college (1979) and moved away from my friends, my exposure to new music gradually dwindled. And when music went digital and then virtual, the concept of "albums" faded. Songs became the commodity.

I've been collecting new songs from the annual SxSW download since 2004. I've got something like 3,000 MP3s from 2004-present on my phone. None of them are albums.

Yeah I feel this list was compiled by a big music nerd that’s near my age. The later albums look pretty curated.

I’ve listened to a lot on this list maybe I’ll go through it in detail at some point.

The one thing that I’ve really needed at the hospital has been music.

I am in a way the opposite in that I almost only listen to music (except radio) in a album format.

I'm surprised but I've certainly listened to 67 of them. Plus a few more (not listed) that I might well have heard all the way through at times while hanging out in high school or college.

Just as surprising, to me at least, is the list of 67 I've heard is strangely accurate of my tastes. Sure there are a few weird entries that come from pirating stuff I'd heard about and playing them while commuting just to see what the hype was (I'll let you guess which ones they are). If I still had a 30 minute commute I'd be tempted again with some others on the list.

I own or have owned (and listened to) at least 56 from that list. But very few from the late 90's on.

I counted 100 up to about 1974 and grew weary of the chore. Perhaps I'll finish tomorrow. Having listened to a lot of blues and jazz from the 50's and 60's helped. I think I'll rack up a ton in the rest of the 70's and 80's, wane in the 90's and wonder WTF in the 21st century.

I went through an album phase where anytime I was in the car I was playing an album straight through on repeat. Maybe it was the last gasp on the old cassette days? Now it's mostly shuffle but I do a lot of listening to specific artists on shuffle instead of my entire collection (yes - I still download music to my phone instead of streaming).

Yeah I feel this list was compiled by a big music nerd that’s near my age. The later albums look pretty curated.
there are three Dexy's Midnight Runners albums on here (!?), so i'm going to say the compiler was in their early-mid 50s when this list was made

A lot of artists released albums with filler around their hits, but some wrote albums as a whole. The Lamb Lies Down (On Broadway), The Wall, Tommy, Desperado...does anyone still write stories like that? Even when they had filler, it was a bridge between chapters.

went through the entire list - i've listened to around 588 of these in their entirety (there were some that would have been soooo long ago that i don't have a clear memory for sure, so i split the difference on those). there were about a dozen that i was like 'why haven't i listened to that yet??', another 50 or so that i'll get around to someday, and about 50 that i do not have any desire whatsoever to hear (i'm looking at you Limp Bizkit)

(and i was wrong, there are two CAN albums on there)

Does it include the albums?
Heh, no. Fortunately I've got a YouTube premium subscription that includes YouTube music. Between that and Spotify I figure I can find most of what's on the list.

Louis Prima - The Wildest! - 1956
Image

Another artist I've not heard before. Wiki tells me he was popular in the 30s and 40s and this marked his return to prominence. This is a collection of big band standards wtih Louis singing with his wife Keely Smith. While Sinata put me to sleep I really enjoyed The Wildest! The songs have a nice energy and there's obvious chemistry between the two singers. I'm embarrassed to admit I've never heard any version of "Just a Gigolo" other than David Lee Roth's version; this version is far superior (not setting the bar super high there). "Body and Soul" features some nice trombone work which I enjoyed as a former player (it's been 30 years since I played! Ugh, we're all old). "Jump, Jive and Wail" is a lot of fun and superior to the cover we all heard in the 90s. Even songs I didn't particularly enjoy, like "Buona Sera", generally include something to enjoy (in that song's case I dig the walking bass line. A stand-up bass helps a song overcome a lot of issues).

This album was great fun. I won't be adding it to my collection but I wouldn't leave the room if someone put it on. Progress!

I counted 122 that I've heard the full album. A few of those I did not like, I'm looking at you Pet Sounds.

Earliest; The Beatles - With The Beatles (1963)
Latest; The Black Keys - Brothers (2010)
Most recently purchased (in 2020); Harry Nilsson - Nillson Schmillson (1971)

Good luck making it through that Ravi Shankar album!
I used to listen to that to put myself to sleep after getting home from my third shift job in a credit card mail room.

Obviously tons of great albums missing from the list, especially since the last decade isn't even accounted for.

Short answer, yes. It's still out there, but it's not generally mainstream.

Nonagon Infinity (2016) by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard must be listened to in it's entirety (and on repeat if possible).
Remind Me Tomorrow by Sharon Van Etten or Whoo Dang by Daniel Norgren (both 2019) are good albums in a more traditional sense.

The book was released in 2005 and due for an update. It's going to take me years to work my way through the list so by the time I get to the end there will probably be a more recent version with albums released since 2005.

Next up:

Fats Domino - This is Fats - 1956
Image

When I think of 50s rock'n'roll this is what I have in mind. "Blueberry Hill" is the song everyone knows but I think there are better tracks on this album ("Honey Chile", "Blue Monday", "La La" (although after hearing that I never want to hear anyone from that generation mocking dumb lyrics in more recent songs)). To be honest I find "Blueberry Hill" a little dull but I enjoy this formula - Fats singing on the piano, a band featuring an upright bass behind him. "Poor Me" is almost a carbon copy of "Blueberry Hill" with what seems like the exact same bass line (although to be fair there are probably 1000 songs from the era with the same bass line). I enjoyed my time with the album but I feel like a lot of the songs are interchangable.

Oddly I had trouble tracking down this album. Wiki includes refernces to it but no page for this album. YouTube music doesn't have the album at all but I could piece all the individual songs together from other collections. I wasn't surprised I couldn't find the Louvin Brothers, an artist I've never seen referneced anywhere else - but Fats Domino? I assume it has something to do with licensing the original album as opposed to later compilations.
