Exactly, but it's even more than that.

Saying you should not represent a guilty person.
What guilty person?

We don't have guilty people before a trial. Even if they admit to it, they're not guilty until the trial. That's central and fundamental to our system. Otherwise you have a justice system based on proving a negative. Want an example of why that's bad? Last week your neighbor lent you his lawnmower. Last night you got into an argument about a dog. Today the police show up - your neighbor says that you stole the lawnmower! Now, kindly provide evidence that you didn't steal the lawnmower. You can't prove the negative? You're guilty - go to jail. Thankfully, that's not how it works. The neighbor says you did something wrong, and it is up to him (or others, on his behalf) to prove it. If there is no proof one way or the other, you're innocent. You're innocent until someone proves you're guilty.

What we do get is people who falsely confess to crimes to protect someone else. What we do get is innocent people charged with crimes due to any number of flaws in the system (especially eyewitnesses, but also prosecutorial misconduct, evidence errors, etc) What we do get are people who plead guilty because of threats. What we do get is extenuating circumstances - not every theft, not every murder, is identical, but when those factors are in the favor of the accused, who stands up for them?

Does defending the genuinely known guilty suck? Yeah, a lot, and for a lot of defenders it is genuinely traumatic. But if they didn't do that, it would be somebody other than the courts that would be deciding that people accused of crimes were guilty, without a trial, without evidence being presented. That can't happen. Ever.

Sometimes the system protects terrible people, but getting rid of those laws would also be getting rid of the laws that protect the falsely accused.

Also, posting about the legal system in a forum full of lawyers is a little nerve-wracking.

Believe it or not, there's more than one individual in human history with the surname of Hubbard. Come to think of it, back in the day, much like many other Commodore 64-owners, I recall quite enjoying chiptunes created by a talented British music composer named Rob Hubbard, who also had nothing to do with the galactic overlord Xenu, despite having an even more similar-sounding given name to that of said science fiction and fantasy author. Here are a few nostalgic vids to enjoy, demonstrating some of his most famous C64 tunes (they're really quite remarkable considering those sounds were coming from a 1980s-era home computer, especially if you reflect upon how much longer it took until PCs began to sound anywhere near as good):

The Mod Squad' actor Clarence Williams III dies at 81

I watched this show as a small child . For some reason though I get it confused with another show I watched back then that was a group of movie type monsters that did stuff together. Like wolfman the mummy dracula type monsters. I still am not sure what that was.
Clarence Williams III, who played Linc Hayes in "The Mod Squad," died at his home in Los Angeles after battling colon cancer, his manager Peg Donegan told CNN in a statement Sunday.

Williams was 81.

RIP. A great actor and in SO much Ive seen. Lets not forget the game Loadstar: The Legend of Tully Bodine either :)

I have to admit when Id see him in a movie Id cringe just a little or have a weird feeling. He worried me. With his size, the way he'd hoop and yell, and his propensity to turn red during all that I worried about him keeling over from a stroke in everything I saw him in. He lived a long life in the end.

One of the best delivered monlogues in the history of cinema:

The shift in tone at around 02:05 is fantastic. In 1976, I have to imagine this speech wasn't nearly so trite as it would seem today.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Jambi has died at 66.

Pee-wee's Playhouse "Jambi" actor John Paragon has died
Mecka-lecka-hi, mecka-oh-no-no. Sad to report that we've lost one of the good ones. Actor John Paragon has passed at the age of 66. You probably best know him as Jambi, the sassy genie in a jeweled box on Pee-wee's Playhouse. An alum of the improv group, The Groundlings, he worked on several post-school projects with classmates Paul Reubens, Phil Hartman, and Elvira (Cassandra Peterson).

Frank Bonner who played Herb Tarlek on WKRP in Cincinnati passes away.

That was one of my favorite shows growing up, and he was always a great straight man.

I saw some reruns not that long ago. I was surprised that much of the show still stands up well. A lot of those older sitcoms don't weather well.

John McAfee: Anti-virus creator found dead in prison cell
Anti-virus software entrepreneur John McAfee has been found dead in a Barcelona prison cell hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite him to the US to face tax evasion charges.

The Catalan Justice Department said prison medics tried to resuscitate him, but were not successful.

It said in a statement that "everything indicates" McAfee took his own life.

I just found this week that we lost a member of our metro gaming community, Randy Pope, back in February.

He was a funny, friendly guy. Lorini, you may have seen him at BGG.CON. He was hard to miss, being that he was 6'9", and the last few years had been either in a walking boot or on a knee scooter.

He was someone that I always went out of my way to speak to when I saw him. While we weren't close, I definitely will notice his absence.
