I was going to only post updates on the first and 15th of each month, but hit a major milestone today that I felt deserved an update.

Weighed in at 204.6, which means that I have now officially lost 30 lbs since I started running just under a year ago. It's also the first time I've broken the 205 lb barrier, which had previously been proving to be nigh impossible.

I'm not sure how that happened and will chalk it up to a fluke, as I supposedly dropped 2+ pounds overnight after slowly going from 199.9 last Saturday to 197.7 yesterday. Average weight for the week was 198.04. I'm due for a 1-2 pound uptick soon though, based on trends, so I'll accept this false buffer.

More nothing. I set a modest goal and wanted to do things via being more conscious of serving sizes and beer. So far it feels like I'm doing better on the serving sizes and I know I'm drinking less beer but no effect. In fact the pants fit test says that I seem to be getting a little better around the waist even if my total mass is the same?

Not overly concerned about the lack of progress this week. I hit my final week of my 5K training and am running 3 miles 3x a week now, so the calorie expenditure is only going to increase. Also think my post-Super Bowl party weigh-in this morning skewed the numbers a bit. :D

And there's the gain I was expecting. Last weekend was bad, a poker game Saturday with a big buffet followed by the Super Bowl Sunday led to a lot of snacking on high calorie foods. This weekend might not be much better as we had dinner at a friend's place last night and will do the same tonight. If I can't carefully control what's available, I lose will power. :( But I'm in it for the long haul, and I knew last week's big drop was an anomaly, so this is just a blip.

In the past two weeks, I hit a low of 197 and a high of 206. Trying to manage a food budget during hyper inflation is hard...I'll go days with a low caloric intake, followed by several including Mac and Cheese (the kind in the box!) and other high-calorie, pasta-rific dishes.

While only another minor drop this week by average, my weight the last 3 days has been close to a pound under that. So I expect a big week next week. I've got to get out of my current "big dinner" eating habit though. I'm eating a decent breakfast and lunch, and then I'm starving by the time the evening rolls around.

Now I'm officially bothered. I feel like I'm eating the same breakfast and dinners as always but drinking less beer. Plus I've started some light work with dumbbells' daily. Lunch is the joker - I get a free school lunch during the week. It feels like I am eating less. I'm definitely eating less rice (school lunch in Korea means unlimited rice if you want it).

1 - The difference in weight is so little that it could just be how much salt you had with dinner last night, how flexible the floor is where you set it, or how long its been since you went to the bathroom.
2 - Scales are a terrible metric when you're getting in shape. They're largely meaningless in the short term. If you're working out with dumbbells, you're gaining muscle. If you gain a pound and a half of muscle and lose one pound of fat, you are healthier, but the scales show you're gaining weight -because you are. Muscle is heavy stuff, and good to gain. Keep up the process and pay attention to measurements and how you feel, not the number on the scale.

Getting in shape might be pushing it a little. I'm basically trying to grab either 5lb or 10lb dumbbells and crank out 20 reps of various things (curls, shoulder presses, some jumping jacks, and so forth) a couple of times a day when I find myself sitting for too long. It's certainly good for me but I'm not sure it is a real muscle building routing.

There might be something to the salt though. I've been eating through the lap yuk I made earlier in the year mostly as a breakfast meat instead of bacon. I tend to eat more of it than I would of bacon but I counter that by cutting back on the other things in breakfast if I have lap yuk. On the other hand it is salty as all get out and I'm not normally a big salt eater so it might well be a big enough change to do something to my system.

I'm really not too worried about it but it is bumping right around the psychologically important 200 lbs line.

Are you feeling any muscle soreness at all? Are you starting to have an easier time of it? You're building some muscle, and muscle is much denser than fat, which means that there is always an offset to take into account, especially at first.

But still, scales are going to have like a 3 - 7 pound margin of error. Your body can jump that much from day to day depending on what you have eaten, what's in your digestive system, whether you had one cup of coffee or two before weighing, whether you just got out of the shower, and a hundred other things.

Don't pay too much attention to the scale, especially to small changes.

I have about a 10# swing throughout any given week. It's been running from 197-207 more or less. One thing is for sure, no matter what, I still look ridiculous in a Speedo.

Today's weigh-in was 1.5 lbs higher than yesterday's, which was unexpected because I had bean soup for dinner last night. Colon blow is usually good for a slight loss.

10 lbs sounds like a huge swing but I always weigh myself right after getting up so I don't suppose I see the heaviest or the actually lightest. BTW I think I look fabulous in a Speedo. All the walrus seals say I look slim and healthy!

Yes I can tell that the 10 lbs dumbbells are easier to work with so I know I'm building some muscle at least but I really didn't think that such light weights would build enough to show up. I hope it does something to my blood pressure and other numbers.

Now that I've got my running standardized and habitual, I'm starting to incorporate some strength training into the off days. I'm sure that will impact the numbers a bit, but I'm trying to tone up this pathetic sad bod into a hot dad bod. I ain't ever gonna have six-pack abs, but I'm shooting to at least stop muffin-topping over the waist of my pants.

Been doing well on the exercise front, upping my running frequency from 2 days on/1 off to 3 days on/1 off last month.

Unfortunately, any gains there have been offset by a terrible diet over the past couple weeks.

The 205 barrier continues to vex me.

I didn't do well with exercising this week. It's been crazy busy at work and I drove RT to Albuquerque for work so that was 15 hours of sitting over 2 days. I did do in-person training though, which is standing and walking all day, but I didn't count that. Today I'll burn way more calories than usual because it's poker night so that involves cooking, cleaning, and running around nonstop from when I get up (5 am today) to when the game starts around 4:15 pm, but I also won't count that. I'm going to try chewing gum and drinking a lot of water to avoid eating from the big spread of yummies that poker night always entails. We'll see how it goes.

Re: The Redoubtable 2022 Weight Loss Thread

So guess I'll jump in as I made a promise to my doc I would lose weight. I did a crash weigh watchers about 10 years ago and lost 40 lbs but gained 30 back over the years. This time I'm going slower so I can alter my eating habits for good instead of starving myself for a short period of time and having my body rebound. So watch calorie intake and walk/run/lift weights. Goal is to get close to 200 by August (next physical).

Being frugal, I think this in particular is finally the year for me to lose some weight.

I'm really proud of having exercised 4 times this week since I'm already at 64 hours of work for the week and have another 6+ ahead of me today. Forcing myself to make time for exercising was tough since I felt like I needed to be head down, nose to the grindstone at work, but I reminded myself that I'm already letting my body down by spending 12-16 hours in a computer chair staring at monitors every day, the least I can do is move around for 20-45 minutes some of those days.

This week my goal is just mostly to stay steady and not gain, as I'll be doing a spring break hotel pool vacation with our kiddo where the plan is to just lay by the pool and drink and relax. I struggle a lot when I can't restrict the tempting things I have access to, and that's without throwing alcohol in the mix, so we'll see how it goes. If I plan to not gain everything back as soon as I stop being locked in my home 24/7, I need to deal with it eventually, may as well start figuring it out.

Keeping calorie intake under 2000/day and walked 3 miles on 3 days mixed in with a little running. With the new shoes and inserts my plantar fasciitis is not as bad so increasing my run distance each time. Knee rarely hurts these days (7 months removed from torn meniscus surgery).

A bit of a step backwards this week but I'm not too worried about it. I didn't eat great this week so it's understandable. And last week was a bit of a drastic jump, so this correction moves it more in line with reality. My running has continued to improve, so I'll be back on track soon enough.

Last week I lived on restaurant and airport food and didn't exercise. I also drank a bit less than usual, but it didn't balance out.

I'm frustrated that the weather this week has finally turned favorable for daily walks, but my workload doesn't allow them. I fell behind on everything while I was away and accepted a new assignment that I should have passed on, so I can't spare that hour in the morning.

At least I can clamp down on the diet part immediately, and start walking again next week if spring hangs around. I'm only 10 lbs below my all-time high, so this must be the high water mark.

Had a couple days under 205 lbs, which has been encouraging.

My iPhone weight tracker says I've been trending lower on my weight for 22 straight weeks. That's good as well.

As expected, being on a vacation centered around dining and drinking led to a gain, but it could have been worse. This upcoming week I have work travel, but that won't involve alcohol or eating out as entertainment, so it should be ok. My goal is to be out of the 190s by the end of March, which might be a stretch, but we'll see.

This is why women hate men...I have to keep around 1000 calories a day to lose any weight, despite being almost as tall as you. :P
