by Grundbegriff
A Gentle Introduction in 7 Parts.
The Rulebook we're using.
Game 01, now finished, in case you'd like to see how it goes/flows.

This is a game of Puerto Rico with the Extra Buildings expansion and with five house rules:
1. The purchase price of university and factory are swapped.
2. Players who start with corn start with N-1 doubloons while others start with N.
3. In Column 1 of the Bank Board: Hacienda and Forest House may not be in the same game.
4. In Column 2 of the Bank Board: Office and Trading Post may not be in the same game.
5. In Column 3 of the Bank Board: Factory and Specialty Factory may not be in the same game.
6. In Column 3 of the Bank Board: Villa and Jeweler may not be in the same game. <== House rule for Nobles expansion

This game will begin on Thursday, 05 July 2012. It will probably last until the end of the month or the first few days of August.

The players are bb2112, Isgrimnur, Remus West, Chaosraven, and Qantaga. Random.org has determined the seating order and the first governorship. Here's a summary of your position and starting assets:

Seat 1: Qantaga (first Governor): 4 doubloons, 1 indigo plantation
Seat 2: Remus West: 4 doubloons, 1 indigo plantation
Seat 3: bb2112: 4 doubloons, 1 indigo plantation
Seat 4: Isgrimnur: 3 doubloons, 1 corn plantation
Seat 5: Chaosraven: 3 doubloons, 1 corn plantation

As these are acquired, I'll put them under erasure and mark them with the initial of the owner Qa, RW, bb, Is, or CR.

CHOOSING THE BUILDINGS

Posted: Tue Jul 03, 2012 2:15 am
by Grundbegriff
Edit: image updated with results

The first order of business is to decide between these two options:

(1): Mix the standard buildings and expansion buildings together (as shown here) and then randomly identify the buildings that will be included in this game.

(2): Display the standard buildings and expansion buildings, and then allow each player in turn to select a building for inclusion until the Bank Board is filled.

Please express your preference between the Random method and the Selected method.

Three votes for Random, so Random it is.

Here's my method:

Code: Select all

01 small market
01 aqueduct
02A hacienda
02 construction hut
02A forest house
02 black market
03 small warehouse
03 storehouse
04 hospice
04 guest house
05B office
05 large market
05B trading post
05 church
06 large warehouse
06 small wharf
07 university
07 lighthouse
08C factory
08 harbor
08 library
08C specialty factory
09 wharf
09 union hall
10 guild hall
10 residence
10 fortress
10 customs house
10 city hall
10 cloister
10 statue
These are the beige buildings from the core and expansion. I'm placing that list in the Random.org list randomizer. Then I'm popping items from the top of the list and including them until the available slots (1223|4556|7889|10x5) are full. Whenever I reach the first of an A, B, or C pair, I'll delete the other.

Here's the result. An item under erasure was eliminated because its mutex occurs higher on the list. Items in bold are included. The rest are not in the game. Results are shown in randomized order, and then sorted:

08 library
03 storehouse
10 guild hall
05B office
10 statue
05 church
01 small market

I'm familiar with the base game not the expansion. I'm just going to make myself a little chart of what each of the building are in play and their cost/abilities as a reference.

You can find that info in the spoiler in the second post in this thread!

In this thread:
This post explains the house rules and describes the starting assets.
This post describes all the buildings in the core game and first expansion.
This post provides an ASCII version of the bank board and farm/quarry/forest tiles.
This post shows photos of the RL game setup, including your personal board.

Turn order is Qantaga, Remus West, bb2112, Isgrimnur, Chaosraven. Qantaga is the first governor.

I expect that everyone will be somewhat busy during the 4th of July holiday. We're officially starting now, but I reckon things'll be slow or static until Thursday or Friday.

Have a great time with families and friends, everyone. And whenever you're ready... go!

Stupid Isgrimnur passing on his build. Grrrr that cost me an extra slot up top being open which costs me an extra guy if I mayor next round. Jerk. :P

Put my little guy to work in the field. That'll teach him to bring a friend next time.

Point of order. In the Anniversary Edition, which we're using, the "city" is on the bottom and the "island" (i.e., the plantation zone) is on the top.

You have two fields: indigo and tobacco. Where should your guy work?

Incoming ship will have 5 colonists.
