With the recommended settings, I feel the game tries to make the player a part of the crew (targeting, navigation, etc.) while also making the player micromanage the crew (power management, boarding threats, fires, systems needing repair, and various abilities across crew members) AND constantly respond to the position of the enemy relative to their ship, moving gunners around.

If you're like me, this is too much. None of these activities feel particularly rewarding - intuitively, I would think the ship should come with a full complement of gunners, and the crew should be able to find their own targets, and so on. This felt like unnecessary busywork. I came in with the expectation that I'd play as 'mission control,' not the ship's helicopter parent.

If this resonates with you, go to the Difficulty options from the Mess Hall, change targeting to automatic, enable extra crew, and you're off to the races. Adjust other settings as desired.

This transformed the game for me into something very playable, and I easily spent an afternoon on it; I'll likely spend more.
